LOS ANGELES — Prosecutors said Tuesday they want more evidence from police before determining whether to press charges against Chris Brown, who's accused in a domestic dispute that reportedly involves pop superstar Rihanna.

Police presented a case regarding Brown on Tuesday, but did not release any of its details, Los Angeles County District Attorney spokeswoman Jane Robison said. She said the office would have no further comment on the case.

Brown was arrested Sunday night after surrendering to police, who sought the 19-year-old singer when a woman identified him as her attacker during a fight the night before. Numerous media outlets, citing sources and police officials who were not named, have identified the woman as 20-year-old Rihanna, Brown's longtime girlfriend.

Though an initial police news release indicated that they were investigating a battery on a woman who was injured, Brown was booked only on suspicion of making a criminal threat, a felony. Police have said that prosecutors would determine what charges, if any, were warranted.

The district attorney's kicking the case back to police could signal that prosecutors are seeking to build stronger charges against Brown; or it could mean the current evidence is too flimsy or has holes that would drop it to a misdemeanor or make it go away altogether, Loyola University law professor Stan Goldman said.

"Sending it back certainly isn't the death penalty," Goldman said.

"If you're Chris Brown," he added, "it's both bad and good."

A police spokeswoman said the department had no comment about the district attorney's decision.

The department has said it was alerted to the incident in the upscale Hancock Park neighborhood by a 911 call, but have provided few official details beyond the initial report. Brown's attorney and spokesman have not returned multiple calls and e-mails seeking comment since Sunday.

Brown remains free on $50,000 bail.

The allegations have at least momentarily tarnished Brown's squeaky-clean image. At least one major sponsor, Wrigley, has suspended ad campaigns featuring the singer, who has scored with hits such as 2005's "Run It!" and a Grammy-nominated duet with Jordin Sparks, "No Air."

WAKS-FM, a Cleveland-area radio station has stopped playing Brown's music until the allegations are resolved after outraged listeners called to criticize the singer. Stations in Pittsburgh and Indianapolis also reportedly pulled Brown's music.

Brown has withdrawn from public appearances in Phoenix scheduled for this weekend before the NBA All-Star game. Rihanna on Tuesday postponed a planned concert in Malaysia.

Brown and Rihanna, whose real name is Robyn Rihanna Fenty, skipped planned performances at Sunday's Grammy Awards, leaving fellow recording artists to try to make sense of the allegations.

Kanye West, who toured with Rihanna, said on Ryan Seacrest's morning radio show Tuesday morning that the reports of abuse were "devastating."

"I feel like, just as a person, I don't care how famous she is or even if she just worked at McDonald's, that should never happen," West said on the show, which is broadcast on KIIS-FM in Los Angeles. "It should never come to that place."

To those of you saying men should be allowed to protect themselves....YES of course they should and they can...BUT Chris Brown wasn't protecting himself! She had BITE MARKS on her for goodness sake, he punched her a couple of times and he wrapped his hands around her neck and he threatened to kill her and she was crying out for help.

Men in general are bigger and stronger so 9 times out of 10 you can stop a woman from hitting you without actually hitting her. And, your are supposed to LEAVE the situation. We women are way more emotional (hormones) while men are not (hormones again) which is why men generally walk away. Which is what he did only AFTER he hit her.

Also - for those of you that are uniformed....most men that beat women are SICK and there's nothing women can do to stop them. As long as they stay in the relationship the beatings will escalate. Brown needs counseling and Rhianna needs a self defense class! The rest of us should worry about the economy.

I am so tired of people saying that a guy/man should NEVER hit a girl. I say a man should never INTENTIONALLY hit/asault a female. However, if the female is hitting, punching, scratching etc. yes any person should try to distance themself from that situation. However, if the aggressor -be it a male or female -continues to come at you while you are walking away you have every right to defend yourself. I don't know about the rest of these bloggers but there is something called being human and having reflex. Sometimes you can do all the right things but reflex takes over. When this story first came out it was reported as if C Brown stopped his vehicle and preceded to pummel Rhianna-now it seems as if he was trying to avoid the situation but she presisted to attack him. I don't care, a hit is a hit whether it is female to male or male to female. Also,if the DA is requesting more information it means that two and two are not adding up. I think once all is said and done all the bloggers hating on C Brown may find that they rushed to judgement to soon.

I'm sorry Itva, but your comments are nonsensical. If you ever have to hit a woman, you're not a man, you're a coward. Unless she has a gun at your head or a knife at your throat, you are nothing but a coward if you strike a woman - even by "reflex".

Most men who are raised properly are raised to respect women as if they were dealing with their own mother or sister. Real men wouldn't let an argument with a woman escalate to the point of physical aggression whether the aggression is his own or his partner's. He'd be man enough to swallow his pride and ego to diffuse the situation.

Also, just because the DA is asking form more information does not mean that the evidence is not strong enough, it could mean they are dotting all the "i's" and crossing all of the "t's" so they don't screw the case up.

Let's hope you are never in a situation where your words are tested. I say 'but for the grace of God we all could be in any situation at any given time.'
I stand by by original posted comment. Legally speaking, one persons rights end where the other persons nose begins--a person is a man or woman. It has nothing to do with being a man or being 'properly raised'. If that were the case it could be said that a woman 'properly raised' would not hit a man. As for the case being built by the DA I base my comment on what I know to be true through professional experience.

I agree
I think a man shouldnt hit a woman
But ive seen some women take advantage of the fact that they know a man wont hit them, and in turn become abusive.
That is when a woman should be subdued...but not beaten...cause a man is stronger..but some women need to be reminded when they get abusive...

and yes im a woman
ive known men to be all bruised up by women that take advantage
im still dying to get the whole story on this
in previous interviews ive heard rihanna say she used to beat her brothers over the head with bottles..haha dont know if she was abusive...but id love to know how it all started...

I (a girl) was pollywomped by one of my cousins when I was 11 (he was 12) after I slapped him and took his toy. The only reason he got in trouble was because he was older and bigger, when I had to confess that I hit him first, AND took his toy, he was let off the hook and I was punished. My mother explained to me that I should be glad he only hit me back and took his toy, and that I should never lay my hands on someone and not expect them to hit me back. I learned a very valuable lesson that day. Yes, men shouldn't hit women, but a man has the right to defend himself. How far is too far is the bigger question.

None of us really know what happend that night. She may very well have been smacking him around and he defended himself. Time will tell.

People can defend themselves, sure.

But it ends there.

If she looks like she got the worst of it, and she does,

he went too far.

Chris Brown hasn't been convicted of anything, in case anyone bothered to notice. DA sending the case back to police? That means they HAVE NO CASE. You people have been listening to Nancy Grace too much. She loves to completely spit in the face of the Constitution and convict the accused before they have been proven guilty.

Go back to your US Weekly.

That's not necessarily true that they have no case. It could be that the initial charges were insufficient in light of the evidence that was discovered after the initial arrest. It could also be because this is a high profile case that the DA is going to be extra careful and make sure that they have a solid case. And people don't usually hire Mark Geragos because they're innocent.

Being a music critic who's reviewed his music and live performances, I believe that Chris Brown is a talented individual. However, his witnessing a stepfather abusing his mother is no pass or excuse for his alleged behavior: If he knew enough to flee, he knew right from wrong, plain and simple!

After I removed the CB poster from my son's wall for one of Barack Obama, I talked to my 11-year-old son about how wrong it was for Chris, no matter HOW ANGRY, to put his hands on Rhianna. I've taught him to walk away from a combative female, THEN to restrain her if she doesn't get it. You'd think that a man watching his mother get abused would be the biggest deterrent from him doing the same, but unfortunately, more often than not, they perpetuate the cycle.

CB needs help and I hate that this happened to him, but this is not something to be overlooked as a 'youthful indiscretion.' HE KNEW BETTER AND NEEDS TO (PUN INTENDED) FACE THE MUSIC!

1) Happened "TO" him?
2) "Combative female?"
3) "Put his hands on?"

BITING !?!

Cripes, woman! He beat the CRAP out of her!

This is good, they are trying to make sure they have all their T's crossed and I's dotted, especially with this being a very high profile case.

They need to make sure they have everything in order before they file charges.
