Sarah Palin Movie: Hollywood Screenwriters Interested

Two prominent screenwriters are game to turn Alaska Governor Sarah Palin's rise to fame in a movie. "I'm always down for politics as humor. I'm also interested in great characters," Dustin Lance Black told Variety.

His competition, Thomas McCarthy, would focus on Bristol Palin's future husband, Levi Johnston. "This young man gets his girlfriend pregnant and ends up on the Republican platform at the National Convention," McCarthy said. "This 17-year-old kid from Alaska standing on the stage -- there's a dark comedy in there somewhere. He was like a deer in headlights."

Black countered that the two could be combined. "Levi Johnston would be the B story," he said. "It would be like dueling narratives."

Both writers were nominated for Writer's Guild of America awards in 2009 -- Black for "Milk," McCarthy for "The Visitor."

Why turn a cartoon character into cartoon character? The only reason to do this film would be to make money. (Do they really ever make movies for any other reason?) Beyond that, there doesn't seem to be a redeeming reason.

Obviously, Sarah Palin has been all image and no substance, all gaudy color and no defining lines. She was the instant creation of John McCain's campaign team and what we've seen of her has been for the most part anything but genuine. Further, what we would see of her in a movie would be as disingenuous and instant as the woman/politician herself. Only, the screenwriters, as we screenwriters are wont to do, would find at least some way to express the humanity beneath Sarah Palin's public persona, and she would be lent dimensions the writers supply, not those she herself reveals in her words and deeds.

Bad idea. A movie on Sarah Palin is, bottom line, myth building of the worst sort, even if the nominal aim is to lampoon her. She can't lose, and because of that we all stand to lose if the public is ever foolish enough to buy the images and the false fronts that she works so hard to project. I say, for the sake of us all we should give her no help in furthering her career.
