Dutch Politician, Geert Wilders, Banned From Britain For Anti-Islam Campaign

Geer Wilders, a far-right Dutch MP whose film linking Islamic texts with the terror attacks on New York sparked protests around the Muslim world was last night banned from entering Britain.

Geert Wilders, who leads the small Dutch Freedom Party, was due to show his controversial 17-minute film at an event in the House of Lords tomorrow, but was informed yesterday by British officials that he would not be allowed to enter the country. The decision sparked an immediate diplomatic row after the Dutch Government pressed Britain to reverse the ban.

The film Fitna, which criticises the Koran as a "fascist book", sparked violent protests around the Muslim world last year. The film, which has been posted on the internet, juxtaposes images of the Koran with footage of the 9/11 twin tower attacks and other terrorist atrocities. Mr Wilders had been invited to show the film at an event in Westminster hosted by Lord Pearson of Rannoch, the former Conservative, who is now a UK Independence Party member of the House of Lords.

The film starts with an image of the hugely controversial cartoon of the Prophet Mohamed with a bomb as a turban that sparked global protests after it was printed in a Danish newspaper. The film then shows images of the 9/11 aircraft flying into the World Trade Centre, with quotes from calls to the emergency services from people inside the buildings.

It also contains images of bloodstained corpses following the 2004 Madrid rail bombings before showing gruesome images of beheadings and attacks. The film then shows statistics indicating a growing Muslim population in the Netherlands .

Last night, the Home Office refused to comment on Mr Wilders' case. But a spokesman said: "The Government opposes extremism in all forms. It will stop those who want to spread extremism, hatred and violent messages in our communities from coming to our country. That was the driving force behind tighter rules on exclusions for unacceptable behaviour that the Home Secretary announced in October last year."

Mr Wilders, who lives with round-the-clock security after receiving death threats, said a letter from the British embassy informed him he was being refused entry because his views "threaten community harmony and therefore public security" in the UK.

He condemned the British Government's decision as "cowardly".

"This is something you'd expect from Saudia Arabia, not Great Britain," Mr Wilders told a parliamentary session. But he signalled that he might make the journey to London on Thursday despite the ban.

"I am seriously considering just trying it out and just getting on the plane," he said. "Then I'll see what happens. Let them handcuff me," he was quoted as telling Dutch newspaper NRC.

The Dutch Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen said his government would continue to press Britain to reverse the ban. He said he "deeply regretted" that a Dutch lawmaker had been barred entry to the UK.

Mr Verhagen said he had first contacted the British ambassador in The Hague. Having failed, Mr Verhagen then telephoned his British counterpart David Miliband. "It is highly regrettable that a Dutch parliamentarian is refused entry to another EU country," he said in a statement.

Mr Wilders, whose Freedom Party holds nine of the 120 seats in the Dutch Parliament, said he was shocked by the travel ban. He said: "We are talking here about a European Union country, one of the oldest democracies in the Western world."

Lord Pearson, who invited Wilders to show Fitna at the House of Lords, said he was "very surprised" at the news and was looking into what had happened to the Dutch MP.

Singer Yusuf Islam, writer of the song Peace Train, banned from entering the U.S., deported from Israel.
That's ok for some, I guess.

The BBC said he was deported http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/832796.stm
which israel has a right to do, just as the U.K has a right to deny entry to Gert Wilders.

Multi cultralism is almost done in Europe. Hope its not too late for European way of life. My opinion those who cannot become part of European culture and worldview should require to undergo mandatory education and indoctrination into European values..
No one without fluent language ability should be able to receive permanent status, let alone citizenship.
Absolutely no burkas or face covering should be allowed in public schools anywhere on the continent.
You want to wear the black bag over your face? Fine, there plenty of madrassa in Egypt..

What's with the "master race must be preserved" rhetoric? You know that went out of style decades ago, right?

I've seen it.. It's laying it a bit thick, but all true.
Compared to halluci.natory stuff peddled from mos q ue pulpits all over the world, Fitna is like Pippi Langstrumpf.
Here's the film. Judge for yourself.

And how many mosques have you been to, ML?

Really? I thought that was "jihad?" Have we been /lied/ to about the real meaning of Arabic words all this time?! Gasp!

The clueless Brits are handing Wilders priceless free publicity.
03:25 AM on 02/14/2009
Agreed. as Osca Wild said. Worse being talked about is not being talked about (I paraphrase).
Still, people in Holland have plenty of reasons to be livid about outrages committed by Mu-slims in his country. Few Americans have heard of Theo Van Gogh and other bar abric acts.
09:56 AM on 02/14/2009
You can't even quote Oscar Wilde properly? Geez, man.
10:42 PM on 02/11/2009
So only MUSLIM extremists can preach hate and mass murder in Britain. They do that with impunity, yet a person protesting that preaching of hate is denied the right to point that out? Seems like a foolish double standard to me.
11:42 PM on 02/11/2009
Have you any clue what this guy is about? Let me give you a hint: his political party is more or less aligned with the more nutty Republicans. This guy isn't about "protesting" Muslim extremism. Instead, he is using it as a guise to push his own extreme views.

Wilders isn't about promoting any sort of "discussion". His intended film showing session is pretty much a platform for idiots to come out and bash Islam.
01:50 AM on 02/12/2009
No they can't. The UK regularly bans Muslim preachers from entering the country, Louis Farrakhan was also banned from entering the UK. Hell, they even banned a peace loving guy like Snoop Dogg.

It would be a double standard if they allowed Wilders, who is indicted in his own country for hate-speech, to enter the UK. I'm glad they decided otherwise.
03:28 AM on 02/14/2009
Some hate speech is restrained in England, true. Especially since the train bom bing.
But U.K. is still awash in virulent Mu- lim propaganda and Ji had indoctrination and recruitment Far worse than in any other European country.
03:51 AM on 02/14/2009
"The UK regularly bans Muslim preachers from entering the country,"
Obviously not enough.
08:33 PM on 02/11/2009
Good for the united kingdom for trying to keep the peace and banning the provokers from entering, bacause if they had permitted him, then all the terrorists willl have a field day in the uk.
09:04 AM on 02/12/2009
That's a bit rich......how long did it take the spineless Brits to shut down abu Hamza?

They should deport Prince Harry for his many racist comments.
01:24 PM on 02/12/2009
True, but that has nothing to do with democracy.
Geert himself wont make any trouble, and if he upsets someone else for his opinions, its not his foult if they use violence. That would be like blaming young girls for using "challenging clothes" when they get raped.
08:31 PM on 02/11/2009
"The Government opposes extremism in all forms. It will stop those who want to spread extremism, hatred and violent messages in our communities from coming to our country. That was the driving force behind tighter rules on exclusions for unacceptable behaviour that the Home Secretary announced in October last year."

So does that mean every muslim, jew and christian person is denied entry into britain?-- only peaceful atheists are allowed in? these religions are extreme and hateful by default, so thats the only thing i can surmise.

I am not comfortable with this. Is he a terrorists who has murdered or has connections to groups that have? Is he calling for murder? Are ideas so threatening? There are lots of ideas I do not agree with, but I thought in free and democratic societies people could have an opinion. Am I wrong? Am I missing something? I would love to have a rational reason explained to me.
08:35 PM on 02/11/2009
In england what he does is called religious and racist, who would spark trouble.

Hi!
Thanks for explaining that. I do not at all like racist views, but if you have them does that mean you cannot travel to democratic countries? I guess so. I do not know all the issues here. I would hope that people would find commonalities and find ways to love each other.
I am still a bit concerned about free speech. Am I wrong?
Thanks for your imput.

The British should allow him in and then deport him, I think Jordan still has an outstanding arrest warrant on that extremist.

Looks like all he wants is publicity. At least he won't get in Britain. Even if he is deported.

AP's Espo states that the bill needs 60 votes to pass in the Senate. That's a lie. It has become a standard lie from AP to cover up fo Republican obstructionism. The '60 vote' plurality i needed to head off a filibuster, but the actual vote only requires a simple majority. And if the Republicans were anything like decent , they wouldn't filibuster a bill like this, but let it take its chances.
And if Espo and the AP were decent, they wouldn't lie like this.
Lesson: don't trust Republicans, don't trust the AP, don't trust mainstream media.

The British are pathetic. It is unlikely that they will be able support their multi-culti fantasy with a collapsing economy and sectarian strife. The irony is that Wilders becomes ever more famous...and detractors appear ever more ridiculous.
