WASHINGTON — Scientists have unraveled the genetic code of the common cold _ all 99 known strains of it, to be exact. But don't expect the feat to lead to a cure for the sniffling any time soon. It turns out that rhinoviruses are even more complicated than researchers originally thought.

In fact, the genetic blueprints showed that you can catch two separate strains of cold at the same time _ and those strains then can swap their genetic material inside your body to make a whole new strain.

It's why we'll never have a vaccine for the common cold, said biochemist Ann Palmenberg of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, who led the three teams that assembled the family tree of the world's rhinoviruses.

"No vaccine, but maybe a drug," she said.

Why? The outside of these viruses _ the part your body's immune system must recognize _ are hugely variable, making it hard to envision a vaccine that would work against very many strains. But the inside components, what Palmenberg calls the guts of the virus, are remarkably similar from strain to strain, offering targets for therapy.

Adults typically get two to four colds a year, while schoolchildren may get as many as 10. But they do more than cause a runny nose. Rhinoviruses can trigger asthma attacks and play a role in sinusitis, certain ear infections and pneumonia.

Yet these viruses are remarkably mysterious for such a common bug. It was only in the past two years that scientists discovered there aren't two main groups of the viruses but three_ and this new "Group C" collection is nasty, tending to lodge deep in the lungs, Palmenberg said.

Wisconsin researchers paired with teams at the University of Maryland and J. Craig Venter Institute to decipher the genetic sequences of all known Group A and B rhinovirus strains and see how they're related to the newer Group C strains.

The resulting cold family tree, reported online Thursday by the journal Science, organizes human rhinoviruses into 15 distinct branches that evolved over time. Now the hunt is on to define the viral commonalities on each branch, in the quest for anti-cold drugs.

No really, make some chicken soup with lots of ginger. Chicken (boney parts are best for broth and flavor), ginger (the sicker the more ginger to add), onions (yellow). Boil them together in lots of water. Make some rice and eat it with the soup. If you cannot handle the meat you can handle the rice with broth. It'll make you feel better. Add tomatoes if you want, or whatever else. Just get the chicken and ginger in. Lovely.

I tried the zinc, and it seemed to work on the first cold I tried it on, but subsequent colds it has had no effect whatever. I've decided zinc doesn't work.

It is interesting to me what some here have said regarding colds being a necessary cleansing of the body, and exercising of the immune system. I wonder if that is true. Can anyone link to source of info on this?

Garlic pills are supposed to work, but make your breath garlicy. The doc told me today... lots of water to flush it. I swear by home made chicken soup (loose recipe above) and vicks (to break up congestion).

Wash your hand before touching face, eyes and ears.
Key boards and mouse have more bacteria than a toilet seat.
Say away from sneezes.
Works.

Homeopathy-wise, zinc works for lots of people.

Drug-wise... don't expect a cure. The industry would lose one of its biggest cash cows. As long as there's money in long term treatments we'll never see cures for most illnesses.

Garlic pills and gingery things. That is what seems to work for us and we live in cold-virus infested Oregon. Also, exercise doesn't hurt. I notice that the moe you exercise the healthier you stay.

EVEN IF THERE IS A CURE, BIG PHARMA WILL NEVER ALLOW ANY VACCINE TO THE PUBLIC. TOO MONEY IS MADE OF OUR MISERY.

Colds are an important way for the body to cleanse itself of toxins. Enough with western medical technology, how about just eating healthy and removing GMO's and processed food with high fructose corn syrup (i.e. mercury) from the food supply. And please no more articles on the newest phantom, Salmonella. It naturally occurs in our bodies. The big companies want to scare us so they can bring more technology on line like food irradiation so they can poison us and make more money.

I thought God created all these viruses at the same time. They don't evolve.

According to 61% of the population you must be right. Scienctists just make this stuff up.

Those people are scary. (I don't mean the scientists)
Sometimes they (the koolaid drinkers) have elected
politicians who share their views on anti-science.

Yeah this is an endless chain, the cold virus is one of the most mutation-friendly viruses on earth. It cannot be killed.

Want to prevent colds? Do your best to stay away from airborne particle pollution.
Ultra fine particulates originate primarily from combustion sources. While tiny
viruses are the actual cause of colds and flu, fine particles can aggravate, and
even lay the foundation for, the virus to embed itself and for the infection to
take hold. Common sources of fine particles are: tobacco, diesel and two-cycle
engines, and wood-burning fireplaces. Check here for more information:

I take an herb called Andrographis & it is sold under a variety of names but it works for cold, sinus & flu & (knock on wood) I haven't had a cold or flu since discovering it & it solved my sinus problems. It does not work for everyone however & all you can do is try it. I love this stuff.

You probably shouldn't have a story with a headline that includes "Cure For The Common Cold?" and then make the second sentence in that story "But don't expect the feat to lead to a cure for the sniffling any time soon."
