SAO PAULO — The wife of R&B singer Usher continues to recover in a Sao Paulo hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest shortly before undergoing plastic surgery, the spokeswoman of the doctor who was to perform the procedure said Thursday.

Ellen Dastry, spokeswoman for plastic surgeon Silvio Sterman, says Tameka Raymond checked into the Sao Rafael Hospital last Friday for a "simple liposuction." Dastry said that Raymond suffered a cardiac arrest while being anesthetized for the procedure "but was revived in less than a minute by heart massage." She was then placed in an induced coma before being taken to the intensive-care unit, a procedure Dastry said was "absolutely normal" and performed in order to "avoid unnecessary complications."

That same day Raymond was transferred to Sao Paulo's posh and better-equipped Sirio-Libanes Hospital where she is recovering, Dastry said without providing further details.

At Sirio-Libanes, a spokeswoman would only say that Raymond remains hospitalized. She explained that Raymond's family requested that no information regarding her condition be divulged by the hospital. She did not give her name, per hospital rules.

Usher was supposed to perform at music mogul Clive Davis' pre-Grammy party last Saturday, but backed out to come to Brazil to be with his wife.

The 30-year-old R&B star and his wife were married in August 2007. They have two young sons, 2-year-old Usher Raymond V and 2-month-old Naveid Ely Raymond.

Anesthesia drugs can be dangerous. Versed stopped my heart years ago during a simple operation. I was lucky and so was this lady. She's beautiful. So what if she has a little extra fluff on her thighs or wherever. Vanity surgery just isn't worth the risks, IMHO. However, it's not my life or choice, but I do sincerely hope she recovers fully. I pray for her quick recovery.

Plastic surgery is not a game - it has risks like any other surgery.

Why on earth would someone with her money go to Brazil for plastic surgery? There have to be thousands of excellent plastic surgeons here in the U.S. But it also sounds like she made a foolish decision to have the surgery so soon after giving birth. ALL surgery has risks.

Why do people want the short cut to looking good? You don't normally need to have your heart massaged back into working or need to be put in an induced coma when you lose weight thru diet and exercise.

so sad. I've said it before and I'll say it again and I don't care what anyone says...Black people are NOT supposed to have cosmetic surgery. You go under the knife to save your life, not alter looks, unless you've been disfigured. The fact that our skin tends to keloid is support for my theory. It's not for us. POINT BLANK. We start getting money and start losing our minds.

Blacks are not the only ones to have keloids. Check it out.

yes, research then comment, "black" skin is prone to keloid, but keliods are not unique to black skin.

It's my opinion and my theory as I stated. I don't need to do research for an OPINION.

Liposuction, as a rule need not leave any keloids, even in black people.

Which is why you shouldn't be having unneccessary procedures for vanity. If its not reconstructive surgery or due to medical reasons (i.e. ongoing back pain due large breasts) than you should stop playing with fire.

It's really sad the lengths women will go to look good - but it's no surprise! Everywhere we turn there are beautifully airbrushed women - tv, magazines, etc. We read an article about how we should be happy with ourselves, love ourselves, etc and then when we turn the page there is an Ad on creams to get rid of wrinkles, or cosmetic surgery Ad's. It's pathetic...and of course, it's even more difficult for the women in Hollywood. as they are surrounded by all these other plastic barbie dolls with their perfectly manicured hair, nails, faces, etc. You get sucked in by these images and they begin to eat away with you. Especially when perfectly beautiful women like Jessica Simpson are being picked on left right and centre for gaining 10lbs.

That being said, what happened to good old fashioned hard work? Eating right, running a marathon, etc. Everyone wants results like NOW...no one wants to work for anything anymore. And that can be seen in all aspects of life from career to relationships to health. We are all looking for the quick fix...and unfortunately there is no such thing as I am sure Usher's wife is now well aware.

Yes it is sad. Especially when your old enough to be your husbands mother.

Anesthesia is the most risky part of any surgery, even in the hands of the most expert anesthesiologist. Each person's body is different and anesthesia is more risky for some than for others. Just think of all the individuals on this planet and how different each one is from another. Then you'll understand why medicine is referred to as a practice.

Most people spend their time and energy looking for the best surgeon to perform a specific proceedure. They investigate, get references from friends, and try to put their lives into the hands of the best that they can afford. If any lesson can be learned from this, it should be to put at least as much effort into discovering the qualifications of the anesthesiologist.

reconstructive surgery/plastic surgery for disfigurements (car accident, warinjuries) = GOOD

plastic surgery for vanity (bigboobs, skinny nose, bleached skin, lips, lipo) = BAD

surely she could have afforded a trainer..........

When you mock what God has fearfully and wonderfully made(your body)- and try to make it look perfect when it never will be- There are consequences. I hope she recovers and learn from this near death experience-

Good grief. So you're saying G.od is punishing her? That's stupid. And you're rude for abusing the Bible. Go spew your bs to the right-wingers who are scared enough to believe it.

I said this had to be serious!!! Flying a neurosurgeon down there to boot! That was some serious cardiac arrest. I hope she's better than what the media is saying.

I hope Tameka makes a sound recovery to get back to her 5 boys. They need their mother and Usher needs his wife.

she had 3 kids with an ex before Usher. One of the reasons why noone can understand what this guy is thinking. Clearly she is a golddigger, his mom tried to tell him.

She could have died, and for what! She risked her life for vanity sake and then her children would be left without a mother! How stupid! I hoped they both learned something from this.

Plastic Surgery should only be for people with a emergency problem. If God wanted us to have big or small breast, lips and etc. He would have blessed us with them.
