Usher's Wife Had Pre-Plastic Surgery Cardiac Arrest

SAO PAULO — The wife of R&B singer Usher continues to recover in a Sao Paulo hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest shortly before undergoing plastic surgery, the spokeswoman of the doctor who was to perform the procedure said Thursday.

Ellen Dastry, spokeswoman for plastic surgeon Silvio Sterman, says Tameka Raymond checked into the Sao Rafael Hospital last Friday for a "simple liposuction." Dastry said that Raymond suffered a cardiac arrest while being anesthetized for the procedure "but was revived in less than a minute by heart massage." She was then placed in an induced coma before being taken to the intensive-care unit, a procedure Dastry said was "absolutely normal" and performed in order to "avoid unnecessary complications."

That same day Raymond was transferred to Sao Paulo's posh and better-equipped Sirio-Libanes Hospital where she is recovering, Dastry said without providing further details.

At Sirio-Libanes, a spokeswoman would only say that Raymond remains hospitalized. She explained that Raymond's family requested that no information regarding her condition be divulged by the hospital. She did not give her name, per hospital rules.

Usher was supposed to perform at music mogul Clive Davis' pre-Grammy party last Saturday, but backed out to come to Brazil to be with his wife.

The 30-year-old R&B star and his wife were married in August 2007. They have two young sons, 2-year-old Usher Raymond V and 2-month-old Naveid Ely Raymond.

She should be working out her self esteem issues instead of trying to cover them with plastic surgery, my cousin went in for surgery & after anesthesia he died, you got money get a personal trainer & a healthy chef, plenty of stars loose tons of weight in small amounts of time with no plastic surgery, quit trying to hold on to a man with your looks or quit spittin out all them kids!

Oh please, what do you know about the woman? In Hollywood everybody wants the same face, shape and body. With a young husband, she was trying to maintain her body. When she recovers I'm quite sure she'll realize there are alternatives.

Any surgery has its dangers. She has a lovely smile. Why is she subjecting herself to these procedures? Doctors, especially plastic surgeons, are not doing enough to inform men and women who seek these surgeries about the dangers. They can be life threatening and, disfiguring if they go wrong.

Brazil is well known for their great plastic surgeons. She might have went there for better quality, not a better price. Some of the people on this board ASSUME too much.

I posted below but just wanted to let you know, people in the US die from anesthesia. I personally some years ago saw a small child, probably around 10, that died from anesthesia when undergoing a tonsillectomy. Women die in childbirth every year here in the US, people die having plastic surgery. Any kind of surgery and, for that matter, childbirth carries a risk involved. Women go out of the country for other surgical procedures such as bypass surgery, kidney transplants and the like, the reason being here in the cost. People who cannot afford the cost here are trying to get life-saving surgeries at reduced rates because their lives depend on it. The elective surgeries, well that is also done at a much reduced rate in these other countries and after you have the surgery you also have a package that includes a vacation like spa deal, quite inviting for loads of people.

Anesthesia is the scariest part of any surgical procedure, plastic or regular, US Brazil or Europe
Remember that Olivia Goldsmith died in the US before undergoing plastic surgery, soon after another woman died again from complications with anesthesia.
I went into a coma after anesthesia for the removal of an ovarian cyst After I woke up, I was sent to a neurosurgeon who explained to me that not enough oxygen was going to my brain and it was like suffering from a stroke.

Reading the comments here about Usher's wife. First she probably went out of the country to have this surgery, not just the price alone, but if everything had gone alright there probably would be no mention of her having had it. Nothing was in the press, that I know of, that she was there. I have had several plastic surgery procedures done, stopped immediately when I heard my EKG had a slight abnormality and working in the medical field knew I might be at more jeopardy than most. The reason i had my face lift, tummy tuck, etc. was because I wanted to improve on my looks (which I did). I am not ashamed to say I have had. I had droopy eyes, sagging jowls and I feel 100% better for having done that. Oh, I also had a breast reduction because my breasts were saggy and just wanted to give them an uplift. I am never sorry or apologetic for my surgeries. If you have the money and want to, fine, if you don’t want to undergo the knife, fine again. Each one of us makes our own decisions.

You know what? Kudos to you. Nothing wrong with that if it makes YOU better, because that's all that matters. What I have a problem with is these people sneaking off having all of this crap done, and then going back into the spotlight without anyone knowing what they've done. There are young girls out there who actually think that they can look like some of those people with just diet and exercise.

She probably went to Brazil because no doctors would do the procedure here. She just had a baby, no prominent doctor in the US would operate on her.

Brazil is also well own for it's plastic surgeons. They have very sought after plastic surgeons. We don't know for sure if she went there for better quality or cheaper cost, and we should assume nothing.

hope and pray that she has a speedy recovery. I'm not going to pass judgement I will only say that one needs to take their health needs into their own hands. Do not leave everything up to a doctor or take procedures for granted. This is cautionary tale.

It does not surprise me that she went to such measures to improve herself this way. Our society is so youth-obsessed that any sign of aging (flabby tummy, a few wrinkles, etc.) must be completely erased in order to project the image of eternal youth. Add to this the pressure of being the wife of a celebrity who has constantly been criticized of not being worthy of him (i.e. not thin enough or "light" enough). If he did not love her as she was he would not be with her. Her life is more important than a flat tummy.
