Usher's Wife Had Pre-Plastic Surgery Cardiac Arrest

SAO PAULO — The wife of R&B singer Usher continues to recover in a Sao Paulo hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest shortly before undergoing plastic surgery, the spokeswoman of the doctor who was to perform the procedure said Thursday.

Ellen Dastry, spokeswoman for plastic surgeon Silvio Sterman, says Tameka Raymond checked into the Sao Rafael Hospital last Friday for a "simple liposuction." Dastry said that Raymond suffered a cardiac arrest while being anesthetized for the procedure "but was revived in less than a minute by heart massage." She was then placed in an induced coma before being taken to the intensive-care unit, a procedure Dastry said was "absolutely normal" and performed in order to "avoid unnecessary complications."

That same day Raymond was transferred to Sao Paulo's posh and better-equipped Sirio-Libanes Hospital where she is recovering, Dastry said without providing further details.

At Sirio-Libanes, a spokeswoman would only say that Raymond remains hospitalized. She explained that Raymond's family requested that no information regarding her condition be divulged by the hospital. She did not give her name, per hospital rules.

Usher was supposed to perform at music mogul Clive Davis' pre-Grammy party last Saturday, but backed out to come to Brazil to be with his wife.

The 30-year-old R&B star and his wife were married in August 2007. They have two young sons, 2-year-old Usher Raymond V and 2-month-old Naveid Ely Raymond.

I can't for the life of me figure out why she'd go all the way to Brazil for a "simple liposuction" procedure. Clearly, more to this story that meets the eye.

An American surgeon would almost certainly refuse to do the procedure.

Brazil has a lot of very good surgeons, so it is not like this happened because of a poor standard of care. These are the risks of surgery.

I have to be honest-some things you can't exercise. When I was pregnant, I had a 9 pound baby who was breached. She had a prolapsed cord and they had to perform an emergency cesarean. The doctor told me afterwards that my stomach could be flat again, but the muscle was cut and no amount of stomach exercises would get rid of the pooch. Alessandra Ambrosio is in her early 20's and had a cesarean, and you could tell at the Victoria's Secret fashion show. The only way she's going to get rid of that is through plastic surgery. I, however, am just happy to have lost the 100 pounds I gained and I can live with the stretch marks and looking like someone let the air out of my stomach when I bend over.

The lady should not be ashamed of her looks to where she needs plastic surgery, come on she pulled usher. There's BILLIONS of better looking women out there, but if you can pull a superstar of his caliber looking like that, you shouldnt feel too bad about yourself.

Folks, the best way to get back on shape after giving birth is to breastfeed, eat right, hydrate, and take walks daily with your baby, who needs fresh air and a bit of sun for health. It only took me three months to reach my pre-pregnancy weight each time, just living a normal life doing the things I mention... be patient and let nature take the lead, because it is much safer and more lasting.

The local press in Sao Paulo, Brazil, is saying that the problem was that no surgery is recommended for a woman who has just given birth. The OBGYN association recommends at least 6 months after breast feeding stops. The reason is hormonal and that it's easy for blood cloths to form during that time, which with anesthesia can travel to the heart and cause heart failure, exactly what happened to her.

This is the third black woman who has complication when in the hospital for plastic surgery. The soul man 's James Brown's wife died on the operation table. Then there was another woman forgot who she was and now Usher's wife.

I just don't understand why these relatives of wealthy celebs and entertainers don't go to US Board Certified surgeons instead of playing with their life on the cheap? Sure plastic surgery and these procedures are cheaper there but at what risk.

Although, it probably had little to do with the doctors. Undergoing any type of surgery is risky especially because some people have adverse reactions to the anesthesia. She probably would have had the same reaction to the anesthetics if she had been put under in LA.

I read earlier that she was turned down by American plastic surgeons because it was too soon after giving birth. Gee, looks like they knew what they were talking about. I hope that she learned her lesson, and that from her, other rich women also learned that when the doctors in your own country say "no" for a good reason (like life or death!), that reason might just be a valid one. The sad thing is that she was desperate to have the surgery that she defied her American doctor(doctors?) to go to Brazil...a­nd she *still* didn't get the surgery, yet almost died anyway.

Stupid vain women or stupid vain controlling husbands & weak women - who knows what the reason for the rush was. It's not like she had a world tour to get ready for, she just had a baby, what's wrong with being a little less than "perfect" for a while like the average woman who just had a baby? Only the filthy rich would think that plastic surgery is necessary after two months of dealing with their post- pregnancy body. No one expects women to instantly look exactly the same as before they got pregnant. Well, no one sane.
