Usher's Wife Had Pre-Plastic Surgery Cardiac Arrest

SAO PAULO — The wife of R&B singer Usher continues to recover in a Sao Paulo hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest shortly before undergoing plastic surgery, the spokeswoman of the doctor who was to perform the procedure said Thursday.

Ellen Dastry, spokeswoman for plastic surgeon Silvio Sterman, says Tameka Raymond checked into the Sao Rafael Hospital last Friday for a "simple liposuction." Dastry said that Raymond suffered a cardiac arrest while being anesthetized for the procedure "but was revived in less than a minute by heart massage." She was then placed in an induced coma before being taken to the intensive-care unit, a procedure Dastry said was "absolutely normal" and performed in order to "avoid unnecessary complications."

That same day Raymond was transferred to Sao Paulo's posh and better-equipped Sirio-Libanes Hospital where she is recovering, Dastry said without providing further details.

At Sirio-Libanes, a spokeswoman would only say that Raymond remains hospitalized. She explained that Raymond's family requested that no information regarding her condition be divulged by the hospital. She did not give her name, per hospital rules.

Usher was supposed to perform at music mogul Clive Davis' pre-Grammy party last Saturday, but backed out to come to Brazil to be with his wife.

The 30-year-old R&B star and his wife were married in August 2007. They have two young sons, 2-year-old Usher Raymond V and 2-month-old Naveid Ely Raymond.

This is very sad. I think too many people forget that this is "surgery" it's serious and serious results can happen. Not sure I'd take the risks for something optional.

And the worst of this is, she didn't even get the procedure due to the cardiac arrest she had just from the anesthesia. She will go home with a weakened heart and an education on just how dangerous these procedures are.

Actually, in a lot of surgeries, it's actually the putting you under that's the most dangerous part.

So many women do not realize just how dangerous this procedure is. And to do it in Brazil is adding even more danger.

I hope she recovers soon and gets smarter about what she does to herself. Everybody always wants to take the shortcut. Liposuction is not a magic fix to losing weight. Diet and proper exercise work wonders. And this lady has more than enough money to hire ten personal trainers.

That is very scary and I hope she is out of the coma and getting well. I believe in plastic surgery. However our society has become such that if you dont look like a willowy model and have a perfect face, you might as well not exist. We have become so shallow. We need to turn things around so that getting old and looking old is not such an awful experience , because it is inevitable, for most.

actually i don't pray and I really don't care. in fact if she doesn't wake up her demise would be a lesson that would probably save many lives in the years to come.

As I begin this post I am aware of two ads just below where I am typing and 3 more at the top of the page. One is for a formula that promises to cure "embarrassing" stretch marks.

The visual culture reigns supreme. The photo of a happy sexy pregnant woman with skinny legs, speaks volumes. Then she drops the baby and is seen wearing a bikini on the catwalk three days later. Us poor slobs know that in reality it's humanly impossible­....But the pictures tell us differently.

And that plastic surgeon whose work ended up in all the Tabs... Well, his phone is ringing off the hook.

Brazil has the best plastic surgeons in the world. The best ones have operated on the most famous faces with great results, without looking done, like Joan Rivers. Their work looks more like Catherine Deneuve and Sophia Loren, themselves only younger than their age. Most brazilian actresses look 15 years younger but not different than they were before and work way pass their 60's in major roles on TV.
Like everywhere I'm sure there are a number of bad doctors that only care about money. The local press is saying that the Brazilian Association of OBGYN does not recommend surgery so soon after giving birth because it can result in blood cloths being dislodged and causing heart failure. That's exactly what happened to her. Now the Association of Plastic Surgeons in Brazil has no guideline for that but I'm sure the best doctors would have refused to operate on her. Maybe there are guidelines here and therefore she went to Brazil, not because it was cheaper.

There is nothing "normal" about being placed in an induced coma. She may have suffered brain damage which results in a coma.

Don't understand why women can't either exercise and eat well or else accept their bodies as they are.
She obviously had the money for her own personal chef and personal trainer.
And her own personal guru to tell her everyday how beautiful she is if her husband can't.

Apoyo, after cardiac and respiratory resuscitation, it is the general procedure to put the still intubated patient in an induced coma on a ventilator for some hours to stabilize them.If the resuscitation was prompt as reported , then she should be OK, at least I do sincerely hope so.
