Usher's Wife Had Pre-Plastic Surgery Cardiac Arrest

SAO PAULO — The wife of R&B singer Usher continues to recover in a Sao Paulo hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest shortly before undergoing plastic surgery, the spokeswoman of the doctor who was to perform the procedure said Thursday.

Ellen Dastry, spokeswoman for plastic surgeon Silvio Sterman, says Tameka Raymond checked into the Sao Rafael Hospital last Friday for a "simple liposuction." Dastry said that Raymond suffered a cardiac arrest while being anesthetized for the procedure "but was revived in less than a minute by heart massage." She was then placed in an induced coma before being taken to the intensive-care unit, a procedure Dastry said was "absolutely normal" and performed in order to "avoid unnecessary complications."

That same day Raymond was transferred to Sao Paulo's posh and better-equipped Sirio-Libanes Hospital where she is recovering, Dastry said without providing further details.

At Sirio-Libanes, a spokeswoman would only say that Raymond remains hospitalized. She explained that Raymond's family requested that no information regarding her condition be divulged by the hospital. She did not give her name, per hospital rules.

Usher was supposed to perform at music mogul Clive Davis' pre-Grammy party last Saturday, but backed out to come to Brazil to be with his wife.

The 30-year-old R&B star and his wife were married in August 2007. They have two young sons, 2-year-old Usher Raymond V and 2-month-old Naveid Ely Raymond.

This is the third case in the last year of a celebrity hospitalized in Brazil and either dying or almost dying from complications for vanity surgery! We live in the world's best country with the world's best cosmetic surgeons. WHY go to Brazil except for secrecy? Why not just check into the Beverly Hills Hotel, have the surgery, and recouperate in L.A? That's what my famous boss did and nobody was the wiser. Tameka is vain and stupid!

When will people catch on that there is really no such thing as "simple liposuction" or "minor surgery?"

Yes - compared with some other procedures ..... but not in and of themselves.

There are always risks with surgical procedures. And often even more so with anesthesia. That is very dangerous for some people (sometimes fatal). Obviously it didn't go well for Mrs. Raymond. I hope she has a full recovery.

Tameka JUST HAD a baby in Dec. It is less than 2 months later. Her womb hasnt even healed !
Y couldnt Tameka just breast feed, eat a healthy diet & exercise FIRST. Then if still not happy seek out lipo.

Ive had 2 surgeries & was put under anaestesia, I didnt have cardiac arrest.
I was also anesthetized when my Dr took a bone marrow sample.

If she wasn't so cheap this would not have happened. Plastic surgery in countries like Brazil and Dominican Republic is half the price than in the US. If she went there for privacy there are many private clinics in the US if she didn't want anyone to find out. I agree that she should have worked out. She has enough money for a personal trainer, a nutritionist and a chef.

Many people go to Brazil, they have some of the best plastic surgeons in the world. I do not think she chose Brazil because of the cost. Maybe because they have more experience with black women. A plastic surgeon told me once that for instance chemical peels can not be done the same way, because of the pigmentation. Also, most liposuction is done under local anesthesia, so there was probably something else to it.

Sad enough that our society is so shallow that you are only admired if you look young. As for a woman to have to suffer through all this instead of doing it the natural way by exercising and portion control, must not be a confident lady.

Sometimes it's because the anesthesiologist gets the amount of drugs wrong because people lie about their weight, and they get too much of the drug. Granted, most doctors will want to weigh you every time you go in; however, I have dealt with some of them who "take your word for it" when you give them a number, especially if the way you're built suggests to them you might weigh that amount. That's just one way things could have gone wrong.

She wasn't breastfeeding. Which would have sucked some weight off, and tighted her uterus. Maybe she just planned this out incorrectly. Either way, I'm sure she learned a lesson, and didn't die from it. Well wishes to her, and their families.

Sisters, seems to me the procedures aren't worth it. But, if you feel the need to do it, FOLLOW DOCTORS ORDERS. She missed the gate on that one.
