CHICAGO — Despite widespread concern over global warming, humans are adding carbon to the atmosphere even faster than in the 1990s, researchers warned Saturday.

Carbon dioxide and other gases added to the air by industrial and other activities have been blamed for rising temperatures, increasing worries about possible major changes in weather and climate.

Carbon emissions have been growing at 3.5 percent per year since 2000, up sharply from the 0.9 percent per year in the 1990s, Christopher Field of the Carnegie Institution for Science told the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

"It is now outside the entire envelope of possibilities" considered in the 2007 report of the International Panel on Climate Change, he said. The IPCC and former vice president Al Gore received the Nobel Prize for drawing attention to the dangers of climate change.

The largest factor in this increase is the widespread adoption of coal as an energy source, Field said, "and without aggressive attention societies will continue to focus on the energy sources that are cheapest, and that means coal."

Past projections for declines in the emissions of greenhouse gases were too optimistic, he added. No part of the world had a decline in emissions from 2000 to 2008.

Anny Cazenave of France's National Center for Space Studies told the meeting that improved satellite measurements show that sea levels are rising faster than had been expected.

Rising oceans can pose a threat to low level areas such as South Florida, New York and other coastal areas as the ocean warms and expands and as water is added from melting ice sheets.

Story continues below

And the rise is uneven, with the fastest rising areas at about 1 centimeter _ 0.39 inch _ per year in parts of the North Atlantic, western Pacific and the Southern Ocean surrounding Antarctica, she said.

Also, highly promoted efforts to curb carbon emissions through the use of biofuels may even backfire, other researchers said.

Demand for biologically based fuels has led to the growing of more corn in the United States, but that means fields were switched from soybeans to corn, explained Michael Coe of the Woods Hole Research Center.

But there was no decline in the demand for soy, he said, meaning other countries, such as Brazil, increased their soy crops to make up for the deficit.

In turn, Brazil created more soy fields by destroying tropical forests, which tend to soak up carbon dioxide. Instead the forests were burned, releasing the gasses into the air.

The increased emissions from Brazil swamp any declines recorded by the United States, he said.

Holly Gibbs of Stanford University said that if crops like sugar and oil palm are planted after tropical forests are burned, the extra carbon released may be balanced by lower emissions from biofuel in 40 to 120 years, but for crops such as corn and cassava it can take hundreds of years to break equal.

"If we run our cars on biofuels produced in the tropics, chances will be good that we are effectively burning rainforests in our gas tanks," she said.

However, there could be benefits from planting crops for biofuels on degraded land, such as fields that are not offering low productivity due to salinity, soil erosion or nutrient leaching.

"In a sense that would be restoring land to a higher potential," she said. But there would be costs in fertilizer and improved farming practices.

In some cases simply allowing the degraded land to return to forest might be the best answer, she said.

And yet, too many Americans don't believe in global warming. Of course, they're the dittoheads.,,the "low information voters" who don't want to know the truth. How can one convince people about what is really, really happening now when they choose to believe an entertainer? An entertainer who earns his money spouting what his advertisers want him to spout? Exxon-Mobil, for instance? How do you educate those that choose to be ignorant...and are proud of being ignorant? If someone has a way, please tell me because I live among these people. And it just boggles my mind.

How true is that!

The answer lies in the discovery of the conservative gene and its eradication. And I'm only being somewhat facetious.

I do feel that there is a Conservative gene(s). It's probably the same as the religion gene(s). Notice how conservatism and fundamentalist religion seem to go hand in hand.

Anyway, if that is the case, then we might be looking at thousands of years for humans to evolve past that. It also would explain why Christianity is so against evolution. It may feel that it's very survival is at stake.

Low information voters? It was Obama voters who didn't even know which party controlled congress, according to surveys, while most McCain voters did know.

The positive feedback loops related to climate change have been underestimated by most in the scientific community. This includes those who have acknowledged that climate change is a reality. Taken individually, the factors contributing to climate change yielded somewhat linear relationships. This in turn yielded an event horizon of about 100 years. If the combined self accentuating factors are considered en mass, a non linear, exponential curve is obtained. This is the product of each magnifying the other as well as itself. These factors would then predict a non reversible event horizon in less than 40 years. In fact, without an immediate substantial change in both developed AND developing nations the irreversibility of the situation for all practical purposes could come in as little as 10 to 20 years.

Your method looks sound, but I believe underestimation is moot as the threshold has already been passed, and is evidenced by the ongoing reevaluation of the situation. Failure to reconcile aged data leaves a big gap of speculation.

Global warming is taking the Winter off, it will start to get warm again in the Spring, then really hot in the Summer, after that it will cool down in the Fall.

And repeat ....

There is a massive global operation going on. Chemical Aerosol Spraying, by our own military and around the world, at about 30,000 feet. Wake up, look up and start asking questions. Also look up chem trails. they are not contrails. They are very real.

The sun is responsible for about 5% of the warming. Climate change denial has been debunked time and time again. You guys have no more arguments. None. Big Oil is behind every climate change denial movement out there. I wonder why. Only two types of people deny global climate change, paid idiots and unpaid idiots. which are you?

5% to the sun, eh? More like 100% of all the warming on earth. Take away the sun and see how warm you are with just the CO2.

Another alarmist Y2K like scam. When will you globalwarminmongers give your heads a shake?

No honey, try reading it again. This time go for comprehension.

5% of the warming

What this means little one is that out of 100% of the observed warming we can measure, about 5% is due to the sun's very slight increase in output. Now eat your cookie, put on your jammies and go to bed.

Do you every get embarrassed about the lack of knowledge you consistantly display on environmental issues? I repeatedly asked you to answer questions about your omissions on the nuclear energy blog this and last week which you never did answer them. Your posts are consistent with hit and run tactics with zero supporting evidence to support your rants. Numerous other people challenged your omissions without you responding with one supportable fact. Until you can contribute some knowledge based on solid science, I suggest you go back to the Drudge Report.

Thanks for the links. Very interesting viewing. Once again it seems, it all points back to Reagan. He undid all the good work that Carter's long term plans would have done. He also undid Carter's plans to combat the dependence on foreign oil. Wow, history really is making us review the legacy of Reagan.

This is just a vegan propaganda video, with religious overtones. Probably a major eastern religion that believes that we should not kill any animals, including bugs.

Anyway, I do feel that global warming is a problem, but:

Humans are omnivores, which means that we eat both plants and animals. Most animals die by being eaten alive. Very few are eaten after they drop dead from a heart attack or something. At least most humans kill the animals before we start chewing on them. I do have an issue with how many of them are treated while they are being fattened for market, but then that is another matter.

So, I am going to continue to enjoy my steaks. I like mine medium rare. I also love chicken and all kinds of seafood. If you guys want to go through life eating plants and avoiding stepping on bugs, more power to you. Just don't try to force that stuff on me.

Next you'll be telling me that the gas from cow farts is causing global warming. That won't do it either.

I suppose a worldwide depression is far more effecitve than any Kyoto accord -- idled factories, sitting cars, etc. This should make all the tree huggers very happy...

A global depression will actually make matters worse. That is because economic activity put particulates into the air. That tends to cool things and mask how bad things really are. So no, it's not good.

Factories idled by the last Global Warming denier - George I Can't Speak A Coherent Sentance Bush. 2007 worldwide expenditures for clean energy - $84 billlion.

2004 - $30.1 Billion
2005 - $48.9 Billion
2006 - $63.3 Billion
2007 - $84.0 Billion

Yes we have a lot of idled factories according to you.

Besides, the last time I checked you were able to fog a mirror which means you must have breathed some oxygen produced from plants whichg includes trees. Perhaps you could ease up on the Tree Hugger crap since it allows you to breathe and spew your venom here.

Who is "we"? It seems that scientists and climatologists and university studies from around the globe indicate climate change and global warming is a serious threat. But, I am so reassured by your simplistic or should I say simpleton's explanation. The melting polar ice caps and other facts be damned. "We've noted cooling over the past 6 years". Who do work for, FOX News?
