CHICAGO — Despite widespread concern over global warming, humans are adding carbon to the atmosphere even faster than in the 1990s, researchers warned Saturday.

Carbon dioxide and other gases added to the air by industrial and other activities have been blamed for rising temperatures, increasing worries about possible major changes in weather and climate.

Carbon emissions have been growing at 3.5 percent per year since 2000, up sharply from the 0.9 percent per year in the 1990s, Christopher Field of the Carnegie Institution for Science told the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

"It is now outside the entire envelope of possibilities" considered in the 2007 report of the International Panel on Climate Change, he said. The IPCC and former vice president Al Gore received the Nobel Prize for drawing attention to the dangers of climate change.

The largest factor in this increase is the widespread adoption of coal as an energy source, Field said, "and without aggressive attention societies will continue to focus on the energy sources that are cheapest, and that means coal."

Past projections for declines in the emissions of greenhouse gases were too optimistic, he added. No part of the world had a decline in emissions from 2000 to 2008.

Anny Cazenave of France's National Center for Space Studies told the meeting that improved satellite measurements show that sea levels are rising faster than had been expected.

Rising oceans can pose a threat to low level areas such as South Florida, New York and other coastal areas as the ocean warms and expands and as water is added from melting ice sheets.

Story continues below

And the rise is uneven, with the fastest rising areas at about 1 centimeter _ 0.39 inch _ per year in parts of the North Atlantic, western Pacific and the Southern Ocean surrounding Antarctica, she said.

Also, highly promoted efforts to curb carbon emissions through the use of biofuels may even backfire, other researchers said.

Demand for biologically based fuels has led to the growing of more corn in the United States, but that means fields were switched from soybeans to corn, explained Michael Coe of the Woods Hole Research Center.

But there was no decline in the demand for soy, he said, meaning other countries, such as Brazil, increased their soy crops to make up for the deficit.

In turn, Brazil created more soy fields by destroying tropical forests, which tend to soak up carbon dioxide. Instead the forests were burned, releasing the gasses into the air.

The increased emissions from Brazil swamp any declines recorded by the United States, he said.

Holly Gibbs of Stanford University said that if crops like sugar and oil palm are planted after tropical forests are burned, the extra carbon released may be balanced by lower emissions from biofuel in 40 to 120 years, but for crops such as corn and cassava it can take hundreds of years to break equal.

"If we run our cars on biofuels produced in the tropics, chances will be good that we are effectively burning rainforests in our gas tanks," she said.

However, there could be benefits from planting crops for biofuels on degraded land, such as fields that are not offering low productivity due to salinity, soil erosion or nutrient leaching.

"In a sense that would be restoring land to a higher potential," she said. But there would be costs in fertilizer and improved farming practices.

In some cases simply allowing the degraded land to return to forest might be the best answer, she said.

Here are some more great facts for G W (not Bush) doubters: And continuing with more facts from the National Geologic Society, just more of those damm marxists trying to pull a fast one on us reporting this craziness about pollution put into the air in one year by one coal plant: 10,200 tons of nitrogen oxide (NOx), as much as would be emitted by half a million late-model cars. NOx leads to formation of ozone (smog) which inflames the lungs, burning through lung tissue making people more susceptible to respiratory illness. 720 tons of carbon monoxide (CO), which causes headaches and place additional stress on people with heart disease. 220 tons of hydrocarbons, volatile organic compounds (VOC), which form ozon 170 pounds of mercury, where just 1/70th of a teaspoon deposited on a 25-acre lake can make the fish unsafe to eat. 225 pounds of arsenic, which will cause cancer in one out of 100 people who drink water containing 50 parts per billion. 114 pounds of lead, 4 pounds of cadmium, other toxic heavy metals, and trace amounts of uranium" (Professor BSer, please ignore as usual)

For all of you doubters of Global Warming, how about we just look at some facts for you to ignore. Burning coal is a leading cause of smog, acid rain, global warming, and air toxics. In an average year, a typical coal plant generates: 3,700,000 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2), the primary human cause of global warming--as much carbon dioxide as cutting down 161 million trees. 10,000 tons of sulfur dioxide (SO2), which causes acid rain that damages forests, lakes, and buildings, and forms small airborne particles that can penetrate deep into lungs." 500 tons of small airborne particles, which can cause chronic bronchitis, aggravated asthma, and premature death, as well as haze obstructing visibility. So, isn't this nice? We humans may evolve to where this is good for us, ... if we live long enough.

rshrink,

Try to relax. Have a beer, maybe. And please try to refrain from the doomsday predictions when you make a point---your credibility goes up when you do.

And when you mention NOx, SO2, particulates, CO, and the rest: now you are talking about actual pollutants. Please don't get them mixed up with CO2, which is, as a matter of fact, plant food.

It truly appears if there is anyone here who needs to relax, it would be you, Mr. Reactionary. These facts are not predictions. They are measured pollutants with measured consequences. As I said, if you don't think there is any need to worry, I have land for sale in Roane County. Although thanks for your concern about me relaxing and all. Its nice to know you care.

rshrink:

you state that the CO2 from coal plants are a leading cause of global warming. There is no basis in science for that statement.

I did not state that. That was a statement made by the National Geologic Society. If you make it past that statement, then you see what one coal plant produces in the way of pollutants in one year. If you want to speculate as to whether they are correct in their assessment that this is leading to GW, or not, that is your business. If you want to prove it, you have a lot of work to do.

Our problems with Global warming and our emissions problem is no one is willing to do anything about it. The cap and trade the Congress is going to pass is the largest tax ever levied on this Country. When has taxing ever solved a problem.
Water and nuclear are the only now availabe forms to generate large amounts of clean energy and people are against both. Solar and wind are up and coming but people are fighting those and don't want them in their back yard.
We will burn coal until we kill the planet just because we have alot of it.
We used to use moving water and water wheels to give us power. With all the rivers in this country if we put that water to work we could solve our power problems.

In Kansas, the people have spoken out against coal. The legislators that Kansans vote for, being mostly republican and voting against abortion, keep pushing coal, keep bringing it up even though they know that the people don't want it. So, it isn't that the people want coal or nuclear, it is that the power companies do and they are willing to pay for it and the campaigns of the legislators to get what they want.

I heard on Drudge that Chiropractors are being recruited to put a chip in peoples skull when they are twisting their necks. The chip will cause people to want to start cleaning up the environment right away. The first sign that it is working is that they start recycling and it gradually progesses to the point where they want to demonstrate and even start chaining themselves to trees. I expect Limbaugh will confirm this soon and then we will know for sure it is happening.

I would agree that this is a reasonable approach. I think it should be combined though with other measures which dramatically reduce pollution. To do any of this will require educating people and it will need to be equal to the right wing spin machine. Dittoheads will need to be overwhelmed with information, as there is already a lot that they are ignoring.

The best way to cut CO2 would be for all AGW believers to stop exhaling. Think about it; how many time per day do you exhale, and there's a lot of greenhouse gas in every breath.

If you want to multitask, stop f4rting too -- reduce the methane!

A view from a AGW heretic:
http://www.edge.org/3rd_culture/dysonf07/dysonf07_index.html

I would add that the biology of oceans are not well understood.
Millions of years ago, the carbon dioxide level was at least
6000 ppm (currently it is around 385 ppm). That decrease was
due to bacteria and plants. Given what we know about plate tectonics,
Oceans were about 70% of Earth's surface (an also the origin of life)
and contribute to this 6000 to 385 decrease.

Freeman is advocating more focus on our topsoil and I am advocating
more focus on the ocean biology. Focus on both. Plants love carbon
dioxide so much that it absorbs all the carbon dioxide within 10
meters in minutes. Wind currents carrying more carbon dioxide is needed.
Plants are also great absorbers and emitters of water: this issue is being
neglected by the AGW activists.

For propaganda purposes, AGW sheeple show disappearing Artic Ice
as sign of warning. This is false. You can have decreasing temperatures
and still have vanishing ice: if the incoming air currents are
under-saturated with water, some of the current ice sublime away.

Ah yes, the article says that the increase in C02 emissions is caused by the increased use of coal.

But Kyoto is the solution!

We will impose harsh new limits on C02 emissions here by implementing Kyoto.
China won't be required to do the same.
So more industry will move to China where they are building a new coal fired generating station every day.
So we close down the clean industry here and move production to the dirty coal fired industry in China.

Which will increase pollution and C02 emissions.

Brilliant!
Another green plan that will produce the exact opposite effect they say it will.

Probably most of the Chinese are more worried than Amerians. They don't have Limbaugh to contend with and they don't go along with their government so much either. They have already had more consequences from pollution than us due to so many people, so I don't think the above idea will hold. They are more likely to rebel against more pollution than Americans as they tend to be more sophisticated and more courageous. Regardless, there is no excuse for not cleaning things up. We are making people sick and that cannot be good.

Probably?
China is already much more polluted than the US ever was.

And sending more production there through the idiotic scheme of Kyoto would just make it worse for everybody.

''However, a recent study suggests a much warmer planet in relatively recent geological times:
Scientists who probed two kilometers (1.2 miles) through a Greenland glacier to recover the oldest plant DNA on record said the planet was far warmer hundreds of thousands of years ago than is generally believed. DNA of trees, plants and insects including butterflies and spiders from beneath the southern Greenland glacier was estimated to date to 450,000 to 900,000 years ago, according to the remnants retrieved from this long-vanished boreal forest. That view contrasts sharply with the prevailing one that a lush forest of this kind could only have existed in Greenland as recently as 2.4 million years ago. The existence of those DNA samples suggest the temperature probably reached 10 degrees C (50 degrees Fahrenheit) in the summer and -17 °C (1 °F) in the winter. They also indicated that during the last interglacial period, 116,000–130,000 years ago, when temperatures were on average 5 °C (9 °F) higher than now, the glaciers on Greenland did not completely melt away.[20]''
at a guess.. we have something to look forward to! (link: ''greenland''@ wiki)

Global Warming is real, but is it a problem? The earth was once covered in ice and now it isn't. History going back hundreds and thousands of years shows warming trends come and go. I would worry more about the quality of the earth and the air from all the crap that we throw into it. Why don't we trust try to be kind to the planet and see what happens?

Stop calling it Global Warming, sounds way too cozy. Take a cue from Friedman and refer to it as Global Weirding or Climate Change. That way every time it's cold out naysayers won't be on the net guffawing about how "warm" it's getting. Increased carbon emissions have varied effects not just wamer temps!

From the posts in this forum, it is obvious most of the AGW
sheeple have not read the article. It states that the remedies
the posters are advocating increase the net production of carbon
dioxide and destroy local ecology. Little by little, the AGW
sheeple are realising that the ethanol business does more harm
than good in many respects. Brazil is no dummy; it is pushing
vigorously Oil Exploration and Nuclear Energy. The US is still
on the road to dumminess.

This carbon dioxide hysteria is being amplified by the global
financial crisis. People lost a lot in their 401(k) and investments
and are looking desperately for the next "boom", the next "bubble"
to regain - hopefully - their lost treasure. "Green Energy" is
supposed to be the savior.

If warming is such a concern, water is by far the most potent agent.
What I am hearing is a lot of panic of water-related events:
droughts in some areas, floods in others. None of the panic is
related directly to carbon dioxide. The water cycle is different from
the carbon dioxide cycle. The focus should not be so much on carbon dioxide
but on human water use.
