CHICAGO — Despite widespread concern over global warming, humans are adding carbon to the atmosphere even faster than in the 1990s, researchers warned Saturday.

Carbon dioxide and other gases added to the air by industrial and other activities have been blamed for rising temperatures, increasing worries about possible major changes in weather and climate.

Carbon emissions have been growing at 3.5 percent per year since 2000, up sharply from the 0.9 percent per year in the 1990s, Christopher Field of the Carnegie Institution for Science told the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

"It is now outside the entire envelope of possibilities" considered in the 2007 report of the International Panel on Climate Change, he said. The IPCC and former vice president Al Gore received the Nobel Prize for drawing attention to the dangers of climate change.

The largest factor in this increase is the widespread adoption of coal as an energy source, Field said, "and without aggressive attention societies will continue to focus on the energy sources that are cheapest, and that means coal."

Past projections for declines in the emissions of greenhouse gases were too optimistic, he added. No part of the world had a decline in emissions from 2000 to 2008.

Anny Cazenave of France's National Center for Space Studies told the meeting that improved satellite measurements show that sea levels are rising faster than had been expected.

Rising oceans can pose a threat to low level areas such as South Florida, New York and other coastal areas as the ocean warms and expands and as water is added from melting ice sheets.

Story continues below

And the rise is uneven, with the fastest rising areas at about 1 centimeter _ 0.39 inch _ per year in parts of the North Atlantic, western Pacific and the Southern Ocean surrounding Antarctica, she said.

Also, highly promoted efforts to curb carbon emissions through the use of biofuels may even backfire, other researchers said.

Demand for biologically based fuels has led to the growing of more corn in the United States, but that means fields were switched from soybeans to corn, explained Michael Coe of the Woods Hole Research Center.

But there was no decline in the demand for soy, he said, meaning other countries, such as Brazil, increased their soy crops to make up for the deficit.

In turn, Brazil created more soy fields by destroying tropical forests, which tend to soak up carbon dioxide. Instead the forests were burned, releasing the gasses into the air.

The increased emissions from Brazil swamp any declines recorded by the United States, he said.

Holly Gibbs of Stanford University said that if crops like sugar and oil palm are planted after tropical forests are burned, the extra carbon released may be balanced by lower emissions from biofuel in 40 to 120 years, but for crops such as corn and cassava it can take hundreds of years to break equal.

"If we run our cars on biofuels produced in the tropics, chances will be good that we are effectively burning rainforests in our gas tanks," she said.

However, there could be benefits from planting crops for biofuels on degraded land, such as fields that are not offering low productivity due to salinity, soil erosion or nutrient leaching.

"In a sense that would be restoring land to a higher potential," she said. But there would be costs in fertilizer and improved farming practices.

In some cases simply allowing the degraded land to return to forest might be the best answer, she said.

How about putting out the coal seam fires burning on almost every continent but especially in China..?

Also how about this simple solution that can make us much more energy independent and also eats CO2 like crazy...?

The answer is nuclear power.

Clean, safe, efficient, non-polluting, and potentially too cheap to meter.

"Carbon emissions have been growing at 3.5 percent per year since 2000, up sharply from the 0.9 percent per year in the 1990s"

"Anny Cazenave of France's National Center for Space Studies told the meeting that improved satellite measurements show that sea levels are rising faster than had been expected."

These two quotes from the article are odd. If you look at the Mauna Loa plot that I have linked to below you will see that the rise in CO2 in the atmosphere has been very constant since 1960. It begs the question. If emissions of CO2 are going up so fast, why is it not reflected in faster accumulation in the atmosphere?

The second quote above about sea level rising faster than expected is wrong. If you look at the the second link below from the University of Colorado you will see that in the past 5 years sea level hasn't been going up much at all. Check the data when you read scaremongering stuff like this.

real cost of coal is hugely expensive, much more than solar or wind, when you factor in the cost of cleaning up all the pollution which the coal companies gladly pass on to future generations....

When are our leaders going to begin the taboo conversation about population control? Too many people create too much demand for too much energy requiring too much burning of too much coal for too much electricity. Too many people require too many vehicles that require either too much biofuel that needs too much farming that pollutes too many waterways with too much nitrogen that creates too large of an area of hypoxia in the Gulf of Mexico that destroys too much habitat for gulf-dwelling creatures (Who needs shrimp, anyway?), or too much petroleum that rquires too much dependence upon too many Middle Eastern countries full of too many people that hate us. Too many people require too much fresh water that either depletes too many national aquifers that are disappearing at an alarming rate (But since we haven't drained them completely dry, let's let our children worry about that little problem... this is the "me" culture; it's all about "me"...screw future generations.), or drains too many rivers that are fed by less and less snow melts.

I feel sorry for future generations. Our greedy culture has basically doomed them to severely compromised existences because we wanted to live our lives in luxury, ruining our planet in the process. Civilization as we know it is a flawed way of life. I am so glad that I didn't have children; they would probably hate me in the near future.

Ramirez,

There are 6,000,000,000 people and growing using the Earth's finite resources and you don't see this as a problem. I guess you have fully examined what the consequences for hyper-inflation are down the road. We got a brief taste of it in 2007 and 2008. The next looming shortages will dwarf what happened then. A shortage of areable land and fresh water will be added to the mix of problems as the population expands to 9 billion by mid century. It sounds like you do most of your deep thinking with your one-eyed snake.

So let's pretend for a minute global warming is real. Let's pretend that the icecaps melt and sea level rises.

Wouldn't that make a liberal happy? After all, look at all of our beaches lined with summer homes for wealthy people.

Isn't the liberal ultimate goal to punish people who are successful and wealthy? To try to remove wealth from the upper class, while at the same time keeping minorities dependent on government.

Wouldn't the smug liberals be so happy if all the houses for wealthy people were destroyed?

It would also devastate poor people, and create a need to increase government size and spending in relief efforts. We know liberals love that.

If global warming existed, and we stopped it, it would be a devastating blow to liberal causes across the nation.

You guys need to step back and think about the big picture....

This liberal believes that less of us and less of the natural world around us makes us all poorer in life experiences and is for supporting policies that reduce the impact of our actions on the destruction of us and of the natural world.

Monetarily rich or poor plays second to that. Life is precious and finite. As many as possible should be cherished and nurtured, but a balance needs to be struck with the natural world. I believe that that balance is in jeopardy.

It seems that your argument supports doing nothing and allowing whatever comes to come, ie not taking any responsibility in our actions.

And why pretend the ice caps are melting? They are. For capitalistic proof of this look to the shipping industry who are expanding their routes to take advantage of this.

#1- If I'm not mistaken the libs are trying to take steps to remediate GW so those homes don't slip into the ocean, but that is way to far into the realm of reality that you live in. And, regardless of you somehow thinking this is a liberal threat or not, the homes would still go into the water if GW gets worse.

#2- I could explain to you about lots of things, but you're pretty s t u p i d (see above post) and your ideoligical rant would stay the same whether you were hit in the head with GW itself or given irrefutable evidence....

Wow...such incredibly deep thinking. How can a "liberal" present an opposing argument that would defend liberal policies dealing with global warming, when ol' Johny has proven to us that allowing the oceans to rise would be good for America?

And to think that some of these Republicans continue to wonder why they are losing elections almost as fast as they are losing members in their base. Keep it up, Johny, and the only thing that will prove that your party ever existed will be a diorama exhibit next to the dinosaurs in the Museum of History.

The headline reads 'Global Warming Increasing Faster than Predicted' yet there is zero warming data in the story. The story is all about CO2 levels rising. The implicit assumption is that there is a tie between the two but that tie is not discussed.

Where is the evidence that CO2 causes warming, and where is the evidence that OTHER causes might not be responsible for change? What is the 'perfect' temperature for the earth?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:51 AM on 02/15/2009

While there may be a perfect temperature for earth (in the opinion of the holder of that view) the concern over global warming is not in finding or maintaining it. The concern is over the rate of climate change.

Normally climate change occurs over long periods of time which allows species to adapt. Sure some will not be able to and at the same time new species will arise. But if climate change occurs faster than mass extinctions occur.

"The concern is over the rate of climate change."
OK, let us argue that the concern is what you say - the rate of climate change.
What are we to make of the decreasing global temperature since 1998? Are we to now be concerned that the global temperature is dropping, and assume that we are heading for a new ice age? Is it dropping too rapidly? Is it dropping too slowly? What is the correct "rate of climate change"? Seems all we are worried about is increasing global temperature. Despite all our efforts, the global temperature seems to be decreasing, and before all the efforts have been done to accomplish that feat.
So, what are we to do, or to be worried about? Global cooling or global warming?
I am another who would like for the esteemed IPCC "scientists" to tell me the optimal global temperature. I have not seen that figure posted anywhere.

PS many see us as leaders. When we cop out on something we have no effect, in fact maybe a nagative effect. For some reason people look to us, go figure.

And hang on to your term of global warming although the term used should be climate change. Does it really make you feel good to call it global warming rather than the accurate term of climate change? Labeling it global warming with the cold spell that has been upon most of us lends you to sneering at the fact of a change in climate. And we all know it's real. Why are you so bullheaded and rude?

PS we CAN stop what we are doing and we can reduce the impacts, for a short time at least, by learnining about it and changing it. You have no hope. I feel sad for you.

Yes, as a matter of fact I do. I also saw an interview with one of those scientists involved with that research. He pointed out that conclusions drawn were based on the data they used up to the early 1970s. It factored in the pollution caused by “smoke stack” industries and projected conclusions based on those parameters. This pollution acted as barrier to sunlight thus reducing the heat reaching the Earth. If you lived in New York City at that time you will remember having to wipe off the soot that belched forth from the Con Ed plants and coated everything. A funny thing happened however, the Clean Air Act in the United States and other developed countries significantly reduced these pollutants. The changing of the input parameters led to a different result. QED

That is simply incorrect. A review of the literature shows that most scientists were not predicting an ice age. There were a few misinformed journalists reporting that but don't blame the scientists for journalists mistakes.

People really need to take a good look at the way the news cycles have gone the last 40 years or so.
It seems that there is always a crisis looming to instill fear-be it terrorism, climate change, nuclear winter, peak oil, overpopulation, bird flu pandemic, Y2k, and other assorted crises too numerous to mention. Fear that cows the people into submission and into the passive relinquishment of their rights and liberties, is the deadliest instrument that tyrrany has in its arsenal.
In less than a century, the mood of America, it would seem, has gone from a nation of pro-active problem solvers-New Deal, WWII, the Marshall Plan, Atoms for peace, interstate highway system, the space program, New Frontier and Great Society, all characterized by a can do , optimistic technological approach, to that of a post-industrial, consumerist, passive, egotistical and fear ridden (with apologies to Jimmy Carter) malaise.
It is ironic that the one crisis that has actually overtaken the world and must be dealt with post haste-the economic meltdown-appears to have caught our information crazed society completely off guard, while the collective attention of society was distracted by polar bears and turbaned men in caves.
