CHICAGO — Despite widespread concern over global warming, humans are adding carbon to the atmosphere even faster than in the 1990s, researchers warned Saturday.

Carbon dioxide and other gases added to the air by industrial and other activities have been blamed for rising temperatures, increasing worries about possible major changes in weather and climate.

Carbon emissions have been growing at 3.5 percent per year since 2000, up sharply from the 0.9 percent per year in the 1990s, Christopher Field of the Carnegie Institution for Science told the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

"It is now outside the entire envelope of possibilities" considered in the 2007 report of the International Panel on Climate Change, he said. The IPCC and former vice president Al Gore received the Nobel Prize for drawing attention to the dangers of climate change.

The largest factor in this increase is the widespread adoption of coal as an energy source, Field said, "and without aggressive attention societies will continue to focus on the energy sources that are cheapest, and that means coal."

Past projections for declines in the emissions of greenhouse gases were too optimistic, he added. No part of the world had a decline in emissions from 2000 to 2008.

Anny Cazenave of France's National Center for Space Studies told the meeting that improved satellite measurements show that sea levels are rising faster than had been expected.

Rising oceans can pose a threat to low level areas such as South Florida, New York and other coastal areas as the ocean warms and expands and as water is added from melting ice sheets.

Story continues below

And the rise is uneven, with the fastest rising areas at about 1 centimeter _ 0.39 inch _ per year in parts of the North Atlantic, western Pacific and the Southern Ocean surrounding Antarctica, she said.

Also, highly promoted efforts to curb carbon emissions through the use of biofuels may even backfire, other researchers said.

Demand for biologically based fuels has led to the growing of more corn in the United States, but that means fields were switched from soybeans to corn, explained Michael Coe of the Woods Hole Research Center.

But there was no decline in the demand for soy, he said, meaning other countries, such as Brazil, increased their soy crops to make up for the deficit.

In turn, Brazil created more soy fields by destroying tropical forests, which tend to soak up carbon dioxide. Instead the forests were burned, releasing the gasses into the air.

The increased emissions from Brazil swamp any declines recorded by the United States, he said.

Holly Gibbs of Stanford University said that if crops like sugar and oil palm are planted after tropical forests are burned, the extra carbon released may be balanced by lower emissions from biofuel in 40 to 120 years, but for crops such as corn and cassava it can take hundreds of years to break equal.

"If we run our cars on biofuels produced in the tropics, chances will be good that we are effectively burning rainforests in our gas tanks," she said.

However, there could be benefits from planting crops for biofuels on degraded land, such as fields that are not offering low productivity due to salinity, soil erosion or nutrient leaching.

"In a sense that would be restoring land to a higher potential," she said. But there would be costs in fertilizer and improved farming practices.

In some cases simply allowing the degraded land to return to forest might be the best answer, she said.

We must decrease the number of carbon units, their waste is creating to much CO2.

this is a great headline from hereidreport, "Obama has accomplished what no politican in the republican party has been able to do "Create unity in the RNC". I love the way the price of oil has fallen but gasoline prices have risen since Obama has taken office.

From 140 a barrel to 37 dollars a barrel for oil and gas went from 4.10 to 2 dollars when it should be below a dollar.

I guess we can tell who has Obama in their pocket.

I guess reading the facts are beneath some people. The refineries are scaling back their production because of a lack of demand. Yesterday it was reported that the supplies were thinning because the refineries were not producing as much oil. I guess Obama told the refineries to do that, huh. I’ll still take $2.00 over $5.00 – if Obama was really in bed with the oil companies we would be seeing W numbers.

When the Great Goracle can go behind the curtain with his Magic Weather Predictior and turn the knob backwards and match the temps recorded since man first started measuring then I will believe it.

When he can turn that knob and show the ice shelfs contracting and expanding over the last few iceages I will believe him.

Until then I will leave the Hail Goracles to the blind followers and I will continue to fight for the millions in third world countries that are being murdered because of the blind followers actions such as using corn to produce fuel.

blind followers? most people who understand economics know that corn ethanol was a bad idea from the get-go. here's something better.

convert c02 to methanol and dimethyl ether. use wind solar geothermal etc to for the reduction of co2 with H2 (source is water) into methanol. improve carbon sequestration methods. methanol can be converted into petroleum based products (plastics) . it can be used as main fuel . DME used as a diesel fuel with better efficiency. instead of fighting over it, lets up the research grants, start building a green infrastructure, get off oil imports, clean up the atmospheric mess weve created and create some jobs and a new industry while we are at it.

Hey I am all for cleaning up the mess and researching and using new methods to produce energy.

I am also all for looking at the energy produced vs. enviromental damge casued by such things as building wind turbines. Just how much energy and mining and pollution are produced in building these giant wind turbines? They are mainly aluminum and copper which the mining and refining of are major polluters and high energy users.

These are all things that can be mesured unlike the temperature of the earth. The earth is just to big to get accurate measurements of and is in a constant fluid transition you can not do it and everytime you use a new method to attempt it you have to throw out all previous measurements and historical records.

Gosh, all we have to do is to ask for the help of the Republican party. Look at how they keep talking about how the stimulus package is going to have to be paid for by our children and their children. This article's headline "Global Warming Increasing Faster than Predicted" - did not go on to talk about that at all. They made the unsourced statement that CO2 was increasing faster than in the '90's, but since there has been no link between CO2 & Global Warming shown very convincingly, the title is another poorly written post written by people who don't actually get the science they want to believe so bad.

And the claim that sea levels were rising (again, unsourced)

"And the rise is uneven, with the fastest rising areas at about 1 centimeter _ 0.39 inch _ per year in parts of the North Atlantic, western Pacific and the Southern Ocean surrounding Antarctica, she said".

is laughable. Through improved satellite measurements (so, we are changing the measurement type & bias), they can measure a .39" in average sea level rise???

Wow Bill it is your 400MM that has funded this study. There are many a crap studies that has been funded by all our money. Most recently was the set up of social security to check immigration identity, that is being nixed in the stimulus plan. Or the FDA setting up only 3 offices in China with 15 staff, nice coverage. Would be nice to had the FDA effectively follow up immediately on the cat and dog food melamine and prosecute, or peanut situation, or the lead poison in children's toys. Or the wasted government money, your tax dollars, on reports of levee and bridge problems with no money being spent to fix them. Much more effective to wait for the disaster and then the huge amount of money spent later and lives lost. In a final note, very nice that the Republicans are voicing their concerns about our children paying for the debt of their 8 years in power. I thought they believed in small government.

Don't watch any weather reports. They're all based on that science you don't believe exists. By the way, the measurements are done the same way you use a tape measure. They just use beams of light, like the laser measure available for about $20 in your local hardware store. If you can't see more than a third of an inch difference on your tape measure, you've got a vision problem. Oh, and you don't believe in thermometers. Or that black asphalt gets hotter than white marble or...

Right, now if you want to simplify it down to that, then show me where someone stood by the shores of all of these places with their laser levels, and can measure .34 inch in average height with the waves eoming and going, natural tidal patterns, natural changes in expansion & contraction with temperatures, and .... about 40-50 other factors that affect sea levels in such a minute amount. Please show me the method that factors all these things in and can make a believable case that they can measure that - and that it has been in place long enough to detect this "trend".

My personal estimate is 10 to 20 meters. But, we _might_ still get a handle on this. However, to do so, we have to REALLY work hard - and get the GD nay-sayers out of the discussion. They are simply wrong and they aren't helping us _any._ We need to move as fast as we can, so if you don't agree with Global Climate Change, at least find a way to make money off of it and otherwise get out of the way so we can actually save our planet (save the fact that our planet can host _us_).
