My ex is a step ahead on this one. She was a nurse who had numerous affairs with doctors before she found one that wanted her sorry a.ss. She's all set now, whilst I am not. I, however, fought to keep the house so our kids could stay with me - only to discover the value of the property is less now than the amount I refinanced it at. She took most of the equity in the settlement.

Sounds very similar to my situation but all I got was joint custody.

Agreed. I'm all for gay marriage but I think the tax code should treat all individuals equally (give the same tax benefits to single people that married people enjoy). It you're getting married or staying married for financial reasons, you're doing it for the wrong reasons.
I totally agree w/you about singles having the same tax benefits as married people. And about the reason to get or stay married.
Just remember ... invest your money in the long haul, but not the money you need for food.
Either allow same-sex marriage or remove the financial tax benefits from the law.

She's NOT just talking on behalf of herself. She is talking on behalf of MILLIONS of Americans. You do realize that of the 129+ Million Americans who voted in the most recent presidential election, 4% self-identify as LGBT, right? That is more than 5 Million Americans.
I'm going to give you an example of the inequity that a "married" heterosexual couple and a same-sex "civil unioned" couple pay in taxes - with all things being equal - no children, no deductions. Household inome = $97,000. Lets say that each family only had 1 income earner and the other stayed at home.
Because the "married" couple can file jointly, their income tax responsiblity would be $16,944.
But because a same-sex couple MUST file single, their tax responsibility would be $21,145.
The difference is $4,201 more that the same-sex couple MUST pay above and beyond.
Why should same-sex couples be required to subsidize other people's families?
