I Like ItI Don’t Like It

A Chinese woman who lost it at Hong Kong's international airport after missing her flight has become the latest YouTube sensation with over half a million views.

The doors to the woman's flight had already closed, so Cathay Pacific wouldn't let her board. As a result she threw a three-minute tantrum screaming, "I want to go, I want to go" in Cantonese. Her original flight was bound for San Francisco, the airline said it put her on a later flight to Los Angeles.

According to Reuters, the incident occurred earlier this month, but the video didn't make it to YouTube until late last week and by Monday, the "woman going insane after missing her flight video" had over 400,000 hits. (In the 5 hours since Reuters published this story, the number has risen to almost 600,000.)

UPDATE: In the 12 hours since we've posted it, the video's views have more than tripled, bringing the total to 2 million.

I want to know who was on the other end of that flight in San Francisco, because she really freaked out as if she was pulled off the flight, but she was late. Poor thing, I know it's frustrating but you can't expect a whole plane to be delayed for one passenger. Plus they probably already gave her seat away to a non-rev or standby customer. Standard operating procedure.

I don't think there is a relationship between the depth of a feeling and whether the feeling is expressed in a histrionic manner. Expressing yourself in exaggerated fashion does not make the feeling somehow more valid... it actually raises the opposite possibility in my mind.... the person is more involved in convincing others of their cause, in other words manipulating. My reaction to being manipulated in such a way is to be irritated, rather than sympathetic.

If this happened in any airport in the US she would have been handcuffed and tasered and maybe we would have been reading about another law enforcement induced fatality.

It is interesting that the officials just let her get on with it, hat's off to them for showing restraint.

It's interesting to read about this being a certain kind of Asian women trait, Chinese women or others as well. For some reason I can't see Japanese women acting like this, having been to Japan and being married to one they seem to me to embody an amazing sense of control.

Way to smack down a stereotype with another stereotype.

But she had important shopping to do! Ban her for life.

This reminds me of my mother and her sisters. The husband is very nice. My dad would have already retreated to some airport bar/lounge/smoke area to watch over her from a distance and get away from the squawking (both hearing aids promptly shut off). To be fair, my mother and her sisters only carry on like that when it is about something very emotionally affecting like the death or illness of a loved one.

She must have been in a rush to get to the Geary 38. No seriously. Was she worried about BART delays? Come on. The reason why I laugh so hard at this is because yes, I am asian. And asian women (old school - lemme introduce you to my mother) have a tendancy to pull this stunt off. They're absolutely immune from total embarrassment and yes, they have entitlement issues. Why? I'm not sure. But this IS common.

Did anyone see the lady do a hair flip? She pauses to see if she's getting the desired reaction to this. Mind you, if something would've been wrong in their life I think her husband would've been less calm about missing the flight. Not all asians are this crazy, if there was an emergency there are some of us that have our act together to get on that plane. On time. If it was an emergency, traditionally family members would've escorted us to the plane to make sure we got there on time. Not sure what the details are. but at times, I do feel bad for people who work in the service industry. They really earn their pay.

Funny: for a minute there, I thought I was watching the House Republicans.

Actually, she says a lot of things, but at no point did she actually say "I want to go, I want to go" in Cantonese. Reuters reported that incorrectly. Where did all the fact checkers go? She mostly says "but the plane hasn't even left yet" over and over again. Oh yeah, and towards the end she calls her husband "stupid."

If the plane had not yet left, why didn't they just let her on? I do think the people around her were trying to be supportive. It is wrong to make her the object of ridicule.

Once the plane doors shut that's it. It's standard operating procedure. Change the rules for one, gotta change it for some.

I thought she was upset because not one house Republicans voted for the stimulus bill.

If that had been here in the US she would have been tasered within 30 seconds.
