From guardian.co.uk:

Researchers used brain scans to show that when straight men looked at pictures of women in bikinis, areas of the brain that normally light up in anticipation of using tools, like spanners and screwdrivers, were activated.

I can look at a person as a sex object but at the same time respond to them as a personality. Both can be in focus at the same time.

I'd like to see a corrusponding study for women. Except use 3 different types of men: a male model shirtless, a healthy family man by a nice middle class house and a guy in a sports car by his yacht.

There's more to this- how many sexy women or images of attractive women does the average man see a day?

What will that do to a generation men raised on porn browsing?

Now where is the study on women's brains when presented with photos of men holding large wads of cash?

The brain scans showed that when men saw the images of the women's bodies, activity increased in part of the brain called the premotor cortex, which is involved in urges to take action."

"They're reacting to these women as if they're not fully human," Fiske said.

to extrapolate an urge to "take action" to meaning men want to treat women as if they're "not human" is stretching it a bit, hm?

It's actually not a stretch, that statement is based on research on infrahumanization...a form of dehumanization where people report that they believe certain people display less human qualities than other humans (impossible because if you're a human then, well, you're a human) and are more like animals. They deny them human emotions and believe they experience less emotional pain and suffering than other humans. This doesn't speak just to women being sexualized, but to violence against women because dehumanization is a moral disengagement strategy. If someone isn't considered human, you can throw your moral compass out the window and harm them without sacrificing your psychological equanimity.

DUH! - now lets tie that artilce into domestic felonies across the nation- and maybe look at the Stats maybe the man olny so an object to abuse and he does not give a damn about how you feel

As I was told by Texas if it was not for domestci felonies -law enforcement would not be in business
it generates revenues

Tie all that into a thought process and make it Dollars signs from all angles

I suppose if you examine the computer of an Automobile you might have an idea what the auto is doing.

But you might save yourself a whole lot of worry if you simply observed the CAR itself

Right. Because it is a good idea to only observe the symptoms, and why waste time with diagnosing the cause?

Well I'm glad we finally had a study to clear that up. It was like so ambiguous before.

Gee if we had known this sooner I bet a fortune could have been made by selling magazines with photos of scantily clad women or better yet, nudes in them. I know it could be called "Playboy" or something like that!!! What a splendidly worthless piece of research this was. Right up there with the old Time or Newsweek that years ago proclaimed on it's cover another earth shaking finding..."Boys are different than girls!!"

Men may involuntarily respond emotionally in a non-empathetic way, but they can certainly control their voluntary behavior.

The only thing that surprises here is that the part of the brain that allows empathy with other humans was SHUT OFF! Wow, I used to think that the cruelty that was often part of men's reactions was a learned or willful response.

If you consider evolutionary psychology that should come as no surprise whatsoever. "All's fair in love and war" is pretty much the rule for all species - and certainly the species we're closest to.

When it's time to make babies, whatever natural empathic insticts are available need to be muted because (in case you hadn't heard) the the sex act involved a helluva lot of aggression. First, you have to beat the crap out of your erstwhile rivals, and THEN you've got to beat your mate into submission.

This sex-aggression dance is what guarantees that the healthiest genes dominate the species from generation to generation.

Of course, evolutionary psych is only a PART of the puzzle of human sex and love. But we'd be foolish to ignore just how big a part it really is.

Next time I have to fix the toilet or put up a shelf, maybe I'll get myself in the mood by watching a bit of porn.

"healthiest" or "most psychotic"

How do you define healthy?

How do you define evolutionary success?

A lot of unexamined assumptions here...
