Siegelman

One of the likely victims of potential Bush White House lawbreaking is urging President Barack Obama not to compromise with Karl Rove as a means of compelling him to testify before Congress.

Former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman, who was arrested on corruption charges alleged to be politically-motivated, offered a critical reaction to news that Obama's chief counsel, Greg Craig, was considering cutting a deal with Rove in exchange for his testimony.

"This is not a matter involving civil damages. It is a matter of high crimes, abuse of power, the subversion of our country's constitution and of our individual rights and liberties," Siegelman wrote the Huffington Post. "There should be no deal cut with Karl Rove that would provide him with any immunity whatsoever. There is too much at stake. U.S. Attorneys were fired because they wouldn't take on political cases and the DOJ was used as a political weapon to destroy people Karl Rove wanted out of the way. For Rove not to be held accountable means others in the future will feel more free to abuse power.

"The U.S. Supreme Court has made it clear that Congress has the right to get the testimony it needs when investigating a criminal matter. It is equally clear that executive privilege protects advice given to the President if it involves matters of military or diplomatic secrets.

"Rove, therefore, has no place to hide when it comes to questions of his abuse of the Department of Justice."

Late last week, Craig put out a statement encouraging Rove and Congress to reach a deal that would be "sympathetic to those who want to find out what happened" without damaging the "institution of the presidency."

Such an arrangement could mean granting Rove immunity in exchange for candidness -- something Siegelman opposes. But it could also simply be an acknowledgment that executive privilege continues to apply to certain topics and not others, saving Rove from discussing more sensitive matters while forcing him to be forthcoming on other topics.

If the latter is the case, Siegelman should feel a bit of relief. In an interview with The Raw Story, Rove's lawyer, Robert Luskin, said that his client did not appear to be protected by executive privilege from testifying on his alleged ties to the "Siegelman matter."

"The only basis that Rove has ever declined to appear has been the White House claim of immunity for senior advisers to the president and executive privilege," said Robert Luskin. "I do think that it's clearer now that the Siegelman matter falls outside the scope of the former claim and, on that basis, I offered to have Rove appear on this matter."

UPDATE: Siegelman responds to Luskin's statement that executive privilege is not in play when it comes Rove's testimony on his case.

Legal positions of Kar Rove... Reminds me of the song the sheriff sang in " best Little Wore House in Texas" ..."Now you see me , Now you don't"

Rove will never show up under oath and tell the truth.

We all need to give Congressman Conyers encouragement to stay strong, No deals, No immunity, No executive privilege for Rove.

Seligman, understands better than anyone in Congress what has been done, and should be done!

Investigate.

Prosecute any and all guilty.

Let the chips fall where they may.

Naturally, I'd enjoy seeing Rove's tactics come back to haunt him, but in all of this rhetoric, let's not forget that Siegelman was dirty.

You are letting the facts get in the way of this storyline.

Sorry, but we don't know that Siegelman was dirty. There is a strong likelihood that he was framed and then railroaded -- strong enough that a judge took the highly unusual step of releasing him from prison pending appeal.

I understand President Obama's bipartisan nature, but on this, there should be no compromise. Rove should get no deals whatsoever.

He will never get another dollar from me for any reason if he does give immunity to Rove even if he runs against Palin. The department of Justice is not a negotiable issue to many of his most ardent supporters.

My fantasy is that Rove is jailed... right next to Dick Cheney... oh yeah, and throw in dumb Dubya for good measure.

this is a chess game now. Fortunately for the good guys, the king (the weakest piece on the board) is in Dallas these days.
saints preserve us, but does anyone else here get the feeling that the lack of pardons by W means that all that stands between us and the truth now is congress?

If you are above the law, why would you need a pardon?

I think it was the Govenor, played by Charles Durning in the movie, and not the Sherrif, who sang "The Sidestep"...:"Now you see me,Now you don't"

No one is above the law. Mr. Rove has already ignored Congress's calling and chuckled at the Congress. No deals! Everyone in America is accountable for their actions. If it can be proven that Mr. Rove has been behind lots of crimes - he must be punished and sentenced to prison like other convicted felons.

By begging him to testify and granting him immunity is a slap in the face of the American people and the Constitution. Democrats must have a SPINE otherwise we're setting a terrible precedent for our children and their grandchildren. I'm sure there are probably a few Repubicans that can be counted on for fairness. Be couragious, seek truth and NO IMMUNITY. This man's fingerprints are on lots of funny business that in every other country would be grounds for a conviction.

NO DEALS FOR ROVE! This man, so arrogantly self-acknowledged as the mastermind behind the Bush administration should be held accountable for high crimes!

I find it difficult to believe there are so many posters out there that actually think there is a chance in hell that Rove will be forced to testify before anyone, let alone be prosecuted for any of his, or the Bush administrations crimes against the Constitution and the country. There are so many Democrats that where involved during the rubber stamp years of congress that none of this will ever see the light of day.
Don't you understand that all the rhetoric about "moving ahead" and not "dwelling on the past" coming from Washington is double talk for not a chance in hell...

Oh, PUH-lease!! The 'rhetoric' you mention is a statement that the PRESIDENT is NOT going to get deeply involved in any investigation. In OTHER words, he's saying 'Find me the evidence and then we'll see! Don't YOU get it? WE might believe our own propaganda about how dastardly these people were through the time they were in office--SOME of us who live in Texas could add Rove's smear tactics in the Governor's Race that propelled W. to national attention-and STILL, a good portion of the American PEOPLE would say that it was 'just a bunch of left-wing conspiracy theory nutbar drivel'. LET the Commissions and Committees proceed. LET them call ALL the whistleblowers and then the architects---let's SEE WHAT THEY'VE GOT!! We THINK they've committed crimes. It sure LOOKS LIKE they committed crimes. But until the actual EVIDENCE is placed in front of the AG--there IS NO CASE!!

How does Rove sleep at night?

He will never be prosecuted because he was loyal to the right people and he produced the right results. It just goes to show that money talks and BS walks......feel me?

He sleeps at night because he has no conscience towards anybody except himself and those that he helps place into power. He is a sociopath.

Without a conscience to plague him,... he sleeps the sleep of a newborn.
