Namaste Solar: Biden Flubs Denver Company Name (VIDEO)

At the Denver signing of the stimulus bill, Vice President Joe Biden introduced the CEO of Namaste Solar, Blake Jones. He said that if he pronounced the company's name wrong, Jones could call him "Joe Bidden." They both followed through -- provoking a smile from President Obama and laughs from the crowd. Watch:

This thing was an obvious set-up and it was funny. Biden knows how to pronounce namaste, especially since he made a deal out of the pronunciation in order to set up the gag.

I work as a freelance writer with Namaste Solar in Boulder. Joe Biden pronounced Namaste just fine - even people within the company have slight variances in pronunciation. Blake Jones is a great guy and I'm sure it was a lighthearted joke. I think both the president and Biden smiled about it.

Give him a break! He has a history of stuttering, and has worked diligently to correct this affliction over the years! Stuff happens, and everybody has a sense of humor, and he is forgiven. It's a wonder he can articulate at all! Besides which he has the intelligence which makes people respect him, despite his gaffs. Ain't no big deal.

Biden's staff should take care of elementary things like briefing him on correct pronunciations. His staff is new and learning the ropes. I'm sure they'll be more aware of things like this in the future.

Thirty five years ago when I was into practicing yoga, we pronounced namaste the way Joe Biden did. I am only 3 or 4 years younger than Biden, so I suspect he may have heard the term way back when the world seemed so much larger and our immediate connection with Indian terms might have come more from reading words pronouncing them based on our accent rules where now days the population has more interactive ways of learning and hearing languages. Forf those of you who think there is a double standard regarding Bush...bus­h fumbled English words familiar to every citizen, now words like namaste that are not English words, are probably familiar to only an educated few, most of whom have some connection with India or yoga or maybe live in very large cities where the Indian culture events adn restaurants are more prevalent. I would be willing to bet out here in Kansas, maybe 5% of those people I know, at most, would have heard the term and maybe 1% at most would know where it came from.
