Smithfield Foods Restructure Plan: Job Cuts, Factory Closings
The nation's largest pork producer, Smithfield Foods Inc., said Tuesday it plans to close six factories and cut 1,800 jobs to streamline its pork business.
Here's a look at the closures. The number of jobs listed totals more than 1,800 because some employees will be offered transfers:
_Smithfield, Va.: Smithfield Packing Company South facility will close in December, cutting 340 jobs. Of the 1,375 employees, 1,035 will be offered transfers to another plant in the area or North Carolina.
_Plant City, Fla.: Facility making packaged meats will close in September, affecting 760 jobs. A number of salaried employees will be offered transfers.
_Elon, N.C.: Smithfield Packing Plant will close in late summer. About 160 employees will be affected.
_Great Bend, Kansas: A John Morrell plant will close in July, with 275 jobs affected.
_New Riegel, Ohio: Farmland Foods plant to close in April, affecting 230 employees. Smithfield will offer transfers to some salaried employees.
_Hastings, Nebraska: An Armour-Ekrich Meats LLC plant will close in July, affecting 370 jobs.
