Palin To Pay Back Taxes

From Anchorage Daily News:

Gov. Sarah Palin must pay income taxes on thousands of dollars in expense money she received while living at her Wasilla home, under a new determination by state officials.

The governor's office wouldn't say this week how much she owes in back taxes for meal money, or whether she intends to continue to receive the per diem allowance. As of December, she was still charging the state for meals and incidentals.

The previous Governor specifically ordered his staff NOT to request per diem reimbursement for time living in their own home. The current Governor, who has an atrocious track record when it comes to ethics between this, trooper-gate and charge-the-state-so-i-can-bring-my-kids-on-trips-with-me-gate, should take lessons from him. This is an ethics issue far more than it is a tax issue.

She should be less worried about the presidential election and more worried about the Alaskan Gubernatorial primary where she might face a rightfully angry opponent.

Palin Charged Reimbursement for FOX News Interview

Alaska newspaper, adn.com, has pdf on Palin's November & December per diem & reimbursement requests.

Palin charged reimbursement for FOX Interview after the election.

On 11/21, she charged $80.00 reimbursement for talking on the phone to "Sen. Eliz. Dole" even though Dole was not a senator on 11/21.

Palin charged reimbursement for talking to Gov. Ed. Rendell -- hmm.... something fishy about that. I wonder if Rendell charged PA for talking to Palin?

How is she cheating- it was a matter open to debate- no laws either way. A ruling came down, she agreed to pay the tax.

Unlike democrats- she PAID her tax. She was asked to pay- she paid.

Now how many dems in Obama circle can say that? Is Rahm Emmanual offering to pay back tax now that he is in trouble? nope.

How abut the others? Obama's cannot seem to find any dems that pay taxes.

You remember, last June he forgot to pay his taxes on some of his 11 houses.

It's cheating for two reasons:

1) She was claiming per diem for not traveling. Whether the state of AK allows this or not, the IRS has determined that per diem for not traveling is INCOME, which means that it MUST be taxed.

2) She has NOT paid yet, the ruling just came down (a ruling that should never have been asked for, since it's common knowledge)

I mean, seriously, charging your employer for per diems when you're living in your own home should get you fired. And not paying taxes on it should get you audited and fined.

There was no question of 'cheating'. She asked for a review of long standing practices, and has complied with the ruling. Remember too, that by selling the Governor's jet she saved the State up to 400,000 dollars. Subtract any travel expenses for her (unusually large) family and you get a large net saving. And, tell me, how many other Governors and elected politicians have foregone a salary rise of 20% in the recent past--or ever!

There IS a question of cheating. She was claiming per diem for living in her own home, and NOT traveling. Whether Alaska considers that legal or not, the IRS has determined that if they are paying you per diem and you are not traveling, then it counts as income, and you must be charged payroll taxes (Social Security and Medicare) and income taxes.
