Brigitte Bardot To Barack Obama: Save The Seals

PARIS — Brigitte Bardot wants President Barack Obama to save the world's seals.

The French movie icon and longtime animal-rights activist has sent a letter to Obama urging him to speak out against seal hunting.

Bardot said Friday that she has "immense hope" in Obama, "even if I know that he is in demand from all directions and he already has a lot to do in his own country."

The letter was linked to Obama's visit Thursday to Canada, whose large annual seal hunt often is criticized.

The U.S. banned Canadian seal products in 1972.

The European Union is considering a ban on seal products, and Bardot expressed hope that Obama could use his positive image in Europe to lobby for the ban.

These days, due to the efforts of Bardot and others like her, fish stocks in Atlantic Canada have dwindled to such a low that jobs in the fishing industry are being lost at an incredibly alarming rate and the existance of certain species of fish are being threatened. Fishermen in Atlantic Canada see seals as disease carrying worm infested rodents that, due to their gluttonous behaviour are destroying the ocean habitat and, in fact, destroying the ocean itself by spreading their disease and worms onto the other living creatures in the ocean. What President Obama needs to know is that the lives of fishermen and their families everywhere, in Canada AND the USA, depend upon the replentishment of the ocean stocks and by not killing off these sea rodents to a manageable population that we are placing a death sentence upon the fishing industries both here in Canada and the USA. It is our hope that both governments will place a bounty on the head of each sea rodent being killed until such time that their population is not a threat to the ocean and all of it's creatures. We should not ONLY be concerned about the cute ones, but the ugly ones as well.

It was her own emotional attachment to the furry, fuzzy baby seals that caused her to go after the European nations and the USA to stop buying seal products from Canada. This led to an incredible loss of markets for canadian the fishermen, which led to huge govenment imposed cuts in seal quotas. Due to the interference of Bardot and those who share her emotional attachment the seal population spiked and continues to rise no end in sight. The truth is, a single seals eats 18 pounds of fish every day. In Atlantic Canada alone with an over population of 6 MILLION seals this means that 28 BILLION 470 MILLION pounds of fish are being eaten every year - and that's POUNDS of fish. This includes salmon, cod, halibut, haddock and ground fish of every variety. It also includes squid, octopus, mollosks, lobster and shell fish of pretty much every variety. This means that 28 BILLION 470 MILLION pounds of fish will never get to spawn and contribute to the replacement of their species.

Ms. Bardot has been fighting for animal welfare for decades. She rightly criticizes those who are cruel to animals--no matter who they are or where they are from--and I heartily applaud her for that. She puts humane treatment to animals above political correctness--thank heavens! The creatures cannot speak for themselves, and in Ms. Bardot they have a tremendous champion. Yes, President Obama has endless issues awaiting him. But let's hope he is more receptive to saving wildlife than previous presidents.

Bravo Bridget! I think Obama can walk & chew gum at the same time. He can save the seals and work on human issues too. I could care less about people at this point when we are losing hundreds of species of animals to extinction daily due to our poor stewardship of this planet. We've ruined the environment, altered the climate, destroyed habitat, poisoned waterways including the ocean and slaughter species either to the brink or past extinction without regard for the aftermath.

All allies of animals are allies of everyone.
