This Aug. 14, 2007 file photo shows singer Billy Ray Cyrus, left, and his daughter Miley Cyrus, pose together at the premiere of Disney Channel's "High School Musical 2" in Anaheim, Calif. The teen sensation writes in her memoir, "Miles to Go," that negative reactions to her bond with her father and "Hannah Montana" co-star hurt her feelings. She finds nothing "weird" about their relationship and believes some people are simply "full of anger, hatred and bitterness." (AP Photo/Chris Pizzello, file)

NEW YORK — Miley Cyrus doesn't like to admit it, but she's bothered by people who think there's something wrong with the bond between her and her dad, singer Billy Ray Cyrus.

"The media has said some stuff about my dad and me being too close and too cuddly for a father and a daughter," the 16-year-old actress-singer writes in "Miles to Go," a new memoir. "For me and my dad it's not weird at all."

Cyrus' memoir, written with Hilary Liftin, will be published next month by Disney-Hyperion Books. The Associated Press purchased a copy put on sale early.

She doesn't directly mention last year's photo shoot for Vanity Fair, when she is shown reclining against her father, his arm around her shoulder, both of them somber and bare-armed _ an image many found suggestive. But she does write that she loves her father (who co-stars on her "Hannah Montana" show), isn't afraid to show it, and "we don't let other people tell us what expressions we're supposed to have on our faces when we take a picture together!"

Acknowledging that fame inevitably attracts criticism, she writes of being hurt by comments posted about her on the Internet and concludes that some people are "so full of anger, hatred and bitterness."

Referring to the media, she regrets that people make profits off her troubles, and wishes they instead would profit from her "achievements."

Cyrus' records have sold millions of copies and her "I Thought I Lost You," featured in the movie "Bolt," was a Golden Globe nominee for best song. A film version of "Hannah Montana" comes out in April.

"In Miles to Go," Cyrus writes of her down-then-up relationship with another "Hannah Montana" star, Emily Osment. And she reflects on a certain ex-boyfriend, apparently fellow teen idol Nick Jonas of the Jonas Brothers, mentioned not by name, but as "Prince Charming."

Story continues below

She tells of falling for him immediately at an AIDS benefit in 2006, of reuniting with him at a White House Easter Egg Roll during a time they had split up, and of the final parting, in December 2007.

Cyrus says it was the worst day of her life, and inspiration for her hit song "7 Things I Hate About You."

"It's hard to imagine that our love is a story with an end," she writes. "But you know, at least I'm getting some really good songs out of it."

The 266-page book was written for young people, her core audience, with photos, notes scrawled in the margins and plenty of lists. Cyrus advocates family, friendship and pursuing one's dreams, but also mentions the price _ not just the loss of privacy, but the loss of self.

Toward the end of the second season of "Hannah Montana," she fell into despair; "self-hatred" that started with a common affliction, acne, and developed into something greater. She had turned Hollywood, become a "brat," forgotten her own identity.

The blues blew away thanks to Vanessa, a 9-year-old with cystic fibrosis whom Cyrus met at a Los Angeles hospital and instantly connected with.

"I'd been praying to God to take away my vanity and self-centeredness," she writes. "When I met Vanessa, all the superficial obsession over my skin, and all the darkness I'd been feeling, fell away."

Billy Ray looks like he's had more than one nip and tuck. This is a highly questionable relationship, he feeds off her.

Give the girl a break. Without her, the parents would be living in a trailer park.

Please, that's just ridiculous to make that statement.

They'd be living where they've always lived - Franklin, Tennessee - one of the wealthiest cities in the United States. You'd be hard pressed to find a trailer park in Williamson County.

Billy Ray cyrus is a multi millionaire when his daughter was around 5, and has made hundreds of thousands, if not a million, on TV shows over many years.

They have trailer park hair and trailer park manners but don't actually live in a trailer park.

I think some of the comments are a bit harsh, then again, I am fairly jaded myself. So I wanted to have a look at the photos. The 'behind the scenes' photos tell a more revealing truth.

This girl is a full on Lolita-read the book and shouldn't be compared to La Lohan. Miley is in a class all her own. It isn't "our bad" that we see the photos as suggestive. It isn't just that photos are suggestive, the fact IS, that they are, and appear too be staged that way. That is the problem I have with them. There NO way the people involved didn't know. They are manipulating everything this child does- and she is a child. Billy Ray is profiting from exploiting his daughter, and she lets him. They are responsible for whatever reaction the photos or anything they do together, causes. Personally , my dad and I used to be close- and hug a lot, but I would never go anywhere near his crotch- and I find it difficult to believe that was an accident. There is something wrong with the casual/defensive way they both dismiss people questioning their motives, or lack of boundaries. They shouldn't ignore it. If they weren't famous, Billy ray would be jailed if HE took photos like that. Maybe that is why it upsets people so much? Could be.

Not seeing it.

I just saw 18 photos of a girl at a photo shoot, trying to get comfortable, and in the last few shots, her dad joins in.

I guess it takes one to recognize one.

As the father of a ten year old daughter, I find what you are "seeing" in those photos to be the real problem... your own sick thinking. Now... what did your dad do to you that warped your thinking so?

GreenDayJohn, I don't care how many tantrums throw. It is NOT okay to sleep with your sister. I'm sorry, but you're just gonna have to end that relationship. They're plenty of other fish in the sea. And no, I don't mean your first cousins.

Funny, I looked at that slideshow and I noticed a confident, carefree 15/16 year old pushing the envelope a bit while her mother, father and at least one sister hung around, not to mention the couple of dozen photo shoot pro's.

When I think of young girls growing up in the entertainment public eye, I think of Brooke Shield, who starred in Pretty Baby at 14. I think of Drew Barrymore, who grew up in and survived the cocaine binge that was the 1980's; and, then went on to prosper.. i think of Aguillera and Gellar, Bynes and Duff, as well as Lohan and Spears. Of these, only the latter two has had any real trouble. And, both of them seem to putting their lives back together.

I can only wonder what in your life makes you see what you think you see. Ms. Cyrus seems to be very normal. Her parents, both of them, seem to provide guidance appropriate to the opportunities avaliable. It seems that Ms. Cyrus is more than willing to abide by their direction.

Billy Ray Cyrus hit the music scene with great fanfare and was caught up in the entertainment world for many years. It was like a hurricane.

He ha now assited in mentoring and guiding his daughter into a multi millionare mega star. You can see his influence in his daughter's career. Really when you look at it, it is an amazing feat. Miley Cyrus has been groomed and marketed with great design and care.

Many are not old enough to really remember Billy Ray at his zenith. He was a great entertainer in his own right. Miley Cyrus has Billy Ray's show business attitude and image.

The negative talk is just that. Mi9ley Cyrus, with Bily Ray's guidance is a very rich young lady.

Period.

We all know about the emotional "closeness" of southern family life.

meaning what, exactly?

If you're implying that incest/inbreeding is more common in the American South, we'd all love to see the statistics that bear that out.

Stereotypes are ugly. Period. We who are of Southern heritage get a bit tired of it, but if it makes you feel better about yourself by denigrating millions of people of whom you know nothing, then hey - you're welcome.

But next time, try therapy first, please.

Dayum, Bryan! A little touchy?! I agree, the South has been unfairly tarred with a nasty sterotype for being a bunch of inbred yokels. We all know that people in the south were too busy chasing down blacks, burning crosses and mullet fishing to be having sex with relatives.

Will the South rise again or will it just be a yeast problem?

By the way, Bill Ray would never abuse his meal ticket - er, daughter!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:44 AM on 02/21/2009

You are a bunch of welfare queens down there in the South though. And facts DO bear that out. The South takes almost twice the amount of their federal taxes in federal payouts, while us folks up North flip that statistic around. Face it, this country would be better off if the South just succeeded. Then we could look on the region for what it truly is: a backwards, parasitic dump.

You know what I find a lot more disturbing than Miley Cyrus's "cuddly" relationship with her dad? The public's lingering, not altogether wholesome preoccupation with a sixteen-year-old girl and everything she does. (And the father's willingness to exploit that preoccupation, of course.)

Annie Liebowitz orchestrated and framed the Vanity Fair photo in question to be suggestive, to sell copies, and to be notorious. That the Cyrus' went along with it reveals their gullibility and/or their desire to have the spotlight cast on them and remain relevant. Mr. Cyrus has been out of the spotlight since his one 1989 hit and is riding his cash-cow daughter for all she's worth... no innuendo intended; or maybe so.

I find it rather humorous that people seem to think that Miley and her dad posed like that on their own.. lol. Like the photographer just said "Ok you two.. just do what you normally do.. pretend I am not even here ok?" Lol.. they were posed like that by the photographer and they probably didn't even realize it looked like it looked. And thanks to the camera lens, there is really no telling where Miley's hand was.. angle, flash, lens can all play a part in how things look. But hey... its kind of funny that the people who are screaming perversion are the very ones thinking they see something perverse. Shame on you all!!
