This Aug. 14, 2007 file photo shows singer Billy Ray Cyrus, left, and his daughter Miley Cyrus, pose together at the premiere of Disney Channel's "High School Musical 2" in Anaheim, Calif. The teen sensation writes in her memoir, "Miles to Go," that negative reactions to her bond with her father and "Hannah Montana" co-star hurt her feelings. She finds nothing "weird" about their relationship and believes some people are simply "full of anger, hatred and bitterness." (AP Photo/Chris Pizzello, file)

NEW YORK — Miley Cyrus doesn't like to admit it, but she's bothered by people who think there's something wrong with the bond between her and her dad, singer Billy Ray Cyrus.

"The media has said some stuff about my dad and me being too close and too cuddly for a father and a daughter," the 16-year-old actress-singer writes in "Miles to Go," a new memoir. "For me and my dad it's not weird at all."

Cyrus' memoir, written with Hilary Liftin, will be published next month by Disney-Hyperion Books. The Associated Press purchased a copy put on sale early.

She doesn't directly mention last year's photo shoot for Vanity Fair, when she is shown reclining against her father, his arm around her shoulder, both of them somber and bare-armed _ an image many found suggestive. But she does write that she loves her father (who co-stars on her "Hannah Montana" show), isn't afraid to show it, and "we don't let other people tell us what expressions we're supposed to have on our faces when we take a picture together!"

Acknowledging that fame inevitably attracts criticism, she writes of being hurt by comments posted about her on the Internet and concludes that some people are "so full of anger, hatred and bitterness."

Referring to the media, she regrets that people make profits off her troubles, and wishes they instead would profit from her "achievements."

Cyrus' records have sold millions of copies and her "I Thought I Lost You," featured in the movie "Bolt," was a Golden Globe nominee for best song. A film version of "Hannah Montana" comes out in April.

"In Miles to Go," Cyrus writes of her down-then-up relationship with another "Hannah Montana" star, Emily Osment. And she reflects on a certain ex-boyfriend, apparently fellow teen idol Nick Jonas of the Jonas Brothers, mentioned not by name, but as "Prince Charming."

Story continues below

She tells of falling for him immediately at an AIDS benefit in 2006, of reuniting with him at a White House Easter Egg Roll during a time they had split up, and of the final parting, in December 2007.

Cyrus says it was the worst day of her life, and inspiration for her hit song "7 Things I Hate About You."

"It's hard to imagine that our love is a story with an end," she writes. "But you know, at least I'm getting some really good songs out of it."

The 266-page book was written for young people, her core audience, with photos, notes scrawled in the margins and plenty of lists. Cyrus advocates family, friendship and pursuing one's dreams, but also mentions the price _ not just the loss of privacy, but the loss of self.

Toward the end of the second season of "Hannah Montana," she fell into despair; "self-hatred" that started with a common affliction, acne, and developed into something greater. She had turned Hollywood, become a "brat," forgotten her own identity.

The blues blew away thanks to Vanessa, a 9-year-old with cystic fibrosis whom Cyrus met at a Los Angeles hospital and instantly connected with.

"I'd been praying to God to take away my vanity and self-centeredness," she writes. "When I met Vanessa, all the superficial obsession over my skin, and all the darkness I'd been feeling, fell away."

My daughter and husband are very close too. Don't worry about it. There's molestation everywhere we turn but there's also daddy's who love their girls and girls who just love their daddies.

I personally think it's sad that so few people can appreciate a father and daughter having a close bond. I think people find it perverted because they grew up with emotionally bankrupted fathers. But then again, what do I know...

Honey, if your teenage daughter is touching your husbands crotch then your missing the big picture. There is healthy contact and then there is ...well,,,that. I'm not saying there having sex of any kind, but they profess to be christian and when they pose for a picture she dress provocatively and leans on his, we'll say, upper thigh? Come on, wake up. They are selling sex.

Wow, zuborch, way to reveal your own depravity. The woman said nothing about touching and what's wrong with you that a young girl cannot lean against her dad? Are you saying that if your daughter leaned against your thigh you'd become aroused? Are you telling us that you have to use Christ to suppress 'wrong' thoughts?

'Cause if you are, you need to get help. And stay away from children!

My niece and her dad are very close and affectionate too and there is nothing dis gusting about it. He is affectionate with both his son and daughter, one is 17 and the other is 13.

People who look at this relation as twisted have personal issues to overcome

If you see something wrong with a dad and daughter expressing affection in a healthy fashion than there is something wrong with you not them. The number of teenage girls who get pregnant looking for love from men because daddy was unable to show them love is staggering. It is time to look at your own life and stop studying these people's every move.

A father and daughter relationship that is truly JUST THAT will reflect NO DISCONTENT on any honest individual. This relationship, however, does NOT REFLECT a common father/daughter love. There's something sinister about the both of them and I wonder where her mother is most of the time and why she doesn't have any interaction with the two of them. Something is not right and most people know it in their gut.

I stumbled upon this and had to sign up. I'm not a country fan, and I don't know who Miley is or her father. When I saw that picture with her reclining on him I thought that was her sugar daddy and she's at least 20 years old. That's the true test. If you don't know someone personally or otherwise and look at them. You get a feeling about them based on your experience in life. I'm thirty something and my experience tells me they are lovers not father and daughter. My family is very affectionate and I never saw my teenage sister sitting in my fathers crotch. They actually published a picture of that. Note: I agree, somethings off in that family.

I get sick just seeing this young girl and her daddy. They should not be touching the way they do. Someone call the morals squad, please.

The overall American uptightness about affection and sex is half the reason for sexual perversion.

These two are a Father and Daughter that are comfy with each other, they love each other. I don't know what they actually do, but that pic doesn't suggest to me that they are sexually intimate.

Look at families in third world countries in Africa where they aren't worrying about all the stupid crap we think about here. They are all they've got, and they hold each other close because they love each other. It doesn't mean they are having sex!! Being close with someone IS NOT the same as being sexual. Get it out of your head you close minded nitwits!!!

This is all a part of the Puritanical "Be afraid of everything" crap that this country was built on.

I think they do love each other (as father and daughter only) but the pics were a bit suggestive.

Be careful Miley......Sometimes you look like you're 25, and that's not a good thing. Enjoy your teenage years, don't grow up to fast, and remember that your dad is your dad

I'm sure she's so grateful for your advice auntie. It's so heartwarming that people can get together on the internet and tell people what life is about like they know a damm thing about them.

Hooray for miss self-righteous Georgiegirl

I think it's the fact that he dresses a bit younger for his age, and she dresses a bit older for her age (thus making them look closer in age) that's got people creeped out.

I guess it is not as bad as those "Purity Balls" that are springing up all over the place with the right wing religious loons. A group of dads take their daughters to a ball, fully decked out with ball gowns and limos. While at the ball they sign chastity covenants. The girls also agree to take any boy they may meet home for "inspection" from "daddy". And "daddy" also signs a covenant to keep his daughter a virgin until marriage. Then "daddy" and daughter blissfully dance the night away in each others arms. Barrffffff!!

Some pretty twisted people out there who get all upset because she has a good close relationship with her father. Most fathers today would give anything to have a good relationship with their 16 year old daughter.

Having two nieces live with me has taught me that. In private they are just fine with hugs and kisses on the top of the head, but in public....well I understand.

As for her show? So what? It's just another Disney kid show and I see no harm in it at all. They don't get all weird about wanting to buy anything with her pic on it but I let them watch the show.

I just wish her father would get a grown up hair cut. Even if it's long, but whatever it is he has on his head looks ridiculous and terribly unkempt.

I think it's sad that finally a child star has a good relationship with their father and the media thinks there's something nefarious going on. I have such a wonderful relationship with my dad (mom too), we talk almost everyday and he's one of my best friends. I enjoy being a daddy's girl. My daughter is a daddy's girl. They both love sports. He coaches her soccer team and they're like best buds. My son's a momma's boy. I think it's a wonderful thing when a child can look at their parents as someone that's there for them and as someone to look up to.

This young girl's father (and mother) allowed her to pose provocatively for pictures in a national magazine and to date, at age 15, a 20 year old. These parents need to grow up, act like parents and stop pretending that they aren't deliberately sexualizing their own daughter for profit.

Yes, and the question is ... where is HER MOTHER in this cozy little situation? Nothing wrong with a dad and daughter being close--but when there are thousands of pictures of them together, and none of Daddy and his actual, y'know - WIFE -- there's something out of kilter.
