This Aug. 14, 2007 file photo shows singer Billy Ray Cyrus, left, and his daughter Miley Cyrus, pose together at the premiere of Disney Channel's "High School Musical 2" in Anaheim, Calif. The teen sensation writes in her memoir, "Miles to Go," that negative reactions to her bond with her father and "Hannah Montana" co-star hurt her feelings. She finds nothing "weird" about their relationship and believes some people are simply "full of anger, hatred and bitterness." (AP Photo/Chris Pizzello, file)

NEW YORK — Miley Cyrus doesn't like to admit it, but she's bothered by people who think there's something wrong with the bond between her and her dad, singer Billy Ray Cyrus.

"The media has said some stuff about my dad and me being too close and too cuddly for a father and a daughter," the 16-year-old actress-singer writes in "Miles to Go," a new memoir. "For me and my dad it's not weird at all."

Cyrus' memoir, written with Hilary Liftin, will be published next month by Disney-Hyperion Books. The Associated Press purchased a copy put on sale early.

She doesn't directly mention last year's photo shoot for Vanity Fair, when she is shown reclining against her father, his arm around her shoulder, both of them somber and bare-armed _ an image many found suggestive. But she does write that she loves her father (who co-stars on her "Hannah Montana" show), isn't afraid to show it, and "we don't let other people tell us what expressions we're supposed to have on our faces when we take a picture together!"

Acknowledging that fame inevitably attracts criticism, she writes of being hurt by comments posted about her on the Internet and concludes that some people are "so full of anger, hatred and bitterness."

Referring to the media, she regrets that people make profits off her troubles, and wishes they instead would profit from her "achievements."

Cyrus' records have sold millions of copies and her "I Thought I Lost You," featured in the movie "Bolt," was a Golden Globe nominee for best song. A film version of "Hannah Montana" comes out in April.

"In Miles to Go," Cyrus writes of her down-then-up relationship with another "Hannah Montana" star, Emily Osment. And she reflects on a certain ex-boyfriend, apparently fellow teen idol Nick Jonas of the Jonas Brothers, mentioned not by name, but as "Prince Charming."

Story continues below

She tells of falling for him immediately at an AIDS benefit in 2006, of reuniting with him at a White House Easter Egg Roll during a time they had split up, and of the final parting, in December 2007.

Cyrus says it was the worst day of her life, and inspiration for her hit song "7 Things I Hate About You."

"It's hard to imagine that our love is a story with an end," she writes. "But you know, at least I'm getting some really good songs out of it."

The 266-page book was written for young people, her core audience, with photos, notes scrawled in the margins and plenty of lists. Cyrus advocates family, friendship and pursuing one's dreams, but also mentions the price _ not just the loss of privacy, but the loss of self.

Toward the end of the second season of "Hannah Montana," she fell into despair; "self-hatred" that started with a common affliction, acne, and developed into something greater. She had turned Hollywood, become a "brat," forgotten her own identity.

The blues blew away thanks to Vanessa, a 9-year-old with cystic fibrosis whom Cyrus met at a Los Angeles hospital and instantly connected with.

"I'd been praying to God to take away my vanity and self-centeredness," she writes. "When I met Vanessa, all the superficial obsession over my skin, and all the darkness I'd been feeling, fell away."

If she really wrote it (yeah, right), no doubt it'll go in the Guinness Book of Records for the most times the word "like" was ever used in a book.

It shouldn't even be a issue when a father and his daughter have a great relationship, what is wrong with some peoples in the media . But what i do disagree with is Miley parents allowing her to date this 20 year old man .

I would never let my kids watch her show, find it totally annoying that some department stores sell her name and face on clothes, bedding and whatever. Totally commercial and true exploitation of a child. Just, it would not be that if thousand would not run and buy these cheaply made things for their little girls. How can girls grow up being individuals if they are bombarded with branded things all of their life? I just do not understand, and maybe I am just from a different planet.

Well, you're an adult (I presume), so it's not surprising that you find Hannah Montana annoying. But what's wrong with the show for young children?

I was just getting ready to ask the exact same thing. I mean is it that serious? They're not running around half naked or kissing guys. She's a teen that goes to high school and is a secret rock star.

"But what's wrong with the show for young children?"

Because the majority of the H.M. shows are about boys, boyfriends, they have kissed (in not a pecking kind of way,) talk about boys, impressing boys, etc. I have a 7 yr old named Hannah who loves being called Hannah Montana at school, and I buy her the shirts and a pillow or blanket b/c she likes being associated w/being famous LOL. I've always been extremely protective of my children and what they view. Due to peer pressure *I* acquiesced and we watched a few shows. They were funny, I think Miley is talented, but it's definitely for older children. The problem is, kids are so "fast" these days that the audience who should be watching H.M. thinks it's uncool and watches shows that are more adult. (For example, Miley has said her fav. show is "Sex and the City!!!!!" Also, she's marketed to young children but the photos that have leaked of her and the Vanity Fair shoot, along w/the fact she's dating a 2o yr old model, mean it's just a matter of time before naked pictures come out or she pulls a Jamie Lynn Spears and gets pregnant. Try explaining that to a 7 yr old!!!

2nd part of my long-winded issue

Case in point: I let Hannah buy shirts & gear w/High School Musical as well, and she came home one day and told me "Troy broke up with Gabriella in the 2nd movie b/c Gabriella took naked pictures of herself!" This is in Kindergarten!!!!!! Miley's dad has said he tries to be her friend, not just a dad. Those kind of parents are the ones who think it's better to have their kids drink and have sex at home b/c they know where they are. I have not let her watch H.M. Montana anymore b/c I know the time will come when some major drama happens and I don't want her looking up to any of the "wholesome" Disney stars.

We don't really complain all that much about the relationship with Billy Ray.

The problem might be the racism, the inappropriate pics online, the trashing of the other teen stars, the inappropriately aged boyfriend ...

... but what we really complain about is the dumbing down of our kids.

I wouldn't let my son or daughter watch that ridonkulous show that might lead them to believe that they can fool a nation just by wearing a wig.

That's the problem.

Do you think Lucille Ball from I Love Lucy really could fool all the people she did in every show? It's called comedy. When you enter a movie theatre or turn on a show you're entering into a contract with the filmakers to enter into the world of the show so as to enjoy and understand it. Do you think Transformers really are going to come to Earth from space???? It's called "suspension of disbelief" when you allow for fantastic things to happen. I agree on the racism point, the nastiness, the old boyfriend, and especially the pictures, but much comedy is supposed to be stupid. You can't look back at the days of yore with believable comedy like the 3 stooges and be serious.

She is rather annoying. We need a larger diversity and real talent on TV. He just needs to look more conservatively when he is posing as a father.

You think it's "creepy" that a father helped his daughter with an acting and singing career? Ridiculous.

It's not the least unusual for the business.
Not at all. His self-promotion at her
expense? Unfortunately that's quite the norm.
And creepy? You bet.

I don't think there is anything creepy about their closeness. I'm pissed that just when we thought we had thrown Billy-ray out the front door, he sneaks back in through his daughters bedroom window.

I don't care what anyone says; the picture of the two of them together is in fact suggestive and therefore completely inappropriate. They're posed like lovers. Plain and simple.

"Suggestive"? That's called projecting sweety, as in, you're projecting your dirty thoughts onto an innocent picture.

I'm not projecting anything and I'm not your "sweety", thank you very much. Defend them if you want to, but don't be patronizing.

Bottom line is, if you saw a picture of two people you didn't know in this exact pose, you'd think they were lovers, or at least that the picture was meant to imply that.

It's a shame our society sexualizes everything and projects their adulterated thoughts onto those who are just hapless being themselves and doing normal, everyday family stuff. Everyone should know by now the special bond between a father and daughter.

My daughter's a DADDY'S GIRL and there is nothing wrong with open affection. The Neo-Cons just don't like open loving relationships; but I say TO BAD for them. LOVE IS THE ANSWER, especially in todays trying times; because for one thing, IT'S FREE!!!!!

God, I love my family and couldn't live without their love. I'm not a fan of either of them, but good for them.

I agree with you, that there is nothing wrong with a openly affectionate relationship between children and their parents. I have know idea why you brought neocons into the story. The people here who are being openely critical don't sound like neocons to me. Are neocons even relevant anymore. Not everything is political.

Billy Ray Cyrus will continue to be as proactive as he can in her life. You can bet that he makes sure that he's included in the publicity. It makes me wonder how far he will go to stay in her limelight?
I think he is extremely creepy.
Has anyone seen her mother with her? I have never seen a photo of them together.
The photographs in Vogue should have been a reality check for him but it doesn't appear that way.
And 16 year children should not be dating 20 year old young men.

If you were saying '40 yr old men,' or even 30, I'd agree. But 20? Come on. That's hardly unreasonable.

I dated a 20 year old when I was 16 and looking back on it, yes, it was unreasonable. They should be at 2 different maturity levels and life experiences. And if they aren't? Well, I'd be a little concerned about a 20 year-old who wants to hang out with a 16 year-old. How many college aged friends did you have at the age of 16?

She:

- is a Golden Globe and Critic's Choice nominee
- is the star of one of the most highly watched kids' shows
- constantly sells out concerts
-had two albums debut as #1 on the Billboard
-is the voice of Penny in the computer-animated film Bolt

Pretty impressive for a 16 year old.

that's her current life... she's a current show-biz commodity.
MANY young kids and teens have even more impressive careers, Jodie Foster, Haley Mills, Kristy McNichols, Patty Duke, Kurt Russel, Leonardo DiCaprio, etc etc etc on and on.... However, a memoir as I said is a diary-like written account of "memories" and momentous moments in a person's life... she is just getting started really, and there have been many "successful" people who turned out to be nothing more than a flash in the pan after a few years.
A "memoir" from Miley is certainly pretentious at her age... I'm just sayin'
