SAN FRANCISCO - It's safe to say Stephen Fowler probably wishes he never appeared on "Wife Swap."

Fowler's stint on the ABC reality show last month, in which he called a rural Missouri woman spending two weeks in his San Francisco home stupid and simple, has made him famous in the worst way.

His performance has inspired a Web site, StephenFowlerSucks.com, a Facebook group, "I Can not Stand Stephen Fowler from `Wife Swap,'" and public condemnation by his own wife, who on her blog urged him to get professional help.

What has generated such wrath is Fowler's condescending treatment of Gayla Long, a mother of four from rural Missouri whose family likes fast food and paintball. In wince-producing remarks, Fowler, who is British, wrote off middle America with such pronouncements as "Your two languages seem to be bad English and redneck."

Three weeks later, Fowler's "Wife Swap" antics are still a YouTube sensation, with at least 10 postings from the show's Jan. 30 episode displayed on the Web site, most with headings such as "ridiculous elitist" and "elitists gone wild."

Last week, Yahoo posted a clip of the show on its site under the heading "Husbands Behaving Badly." Each new posting or story generates thousands of views and hundreds of galled comments.

Fowler, an environmental entrepreneur who develops biofuels, apologized in a statement posted on his wife's blog for behaving "like a complete jerk" and said he has resigned from the boards of two nonprofit corporations for reflecting badly on the organizations.

Story continues below

Some news outlets have reported that Fowler says he has received death threats. Neither Fowler nor his wife, Renee Stephens, could be reached to confirm the reports.

"Wife Swap" is a social experiment of sorts in which wives from two very different families exchange lives for two weeks.

Stephens, a self-described life coach and "destination coach" (who says her goal is "to eradicate weight struggles from the planet") joined Long's husband, Alan, the mayor of a town of 55 residents in Missouri.

Fowler, wearing T-shirts that say "Go Solar," "Tree Hugger" and "Sustainability," hosted Gayla Long with his young son and daughter. At one point, as Long read a list of rules for the Fowler family, Fowler told her, "I didn't know you could read." When Long challenged Fowler for acting like he was better than her, he responded: "I probably make more in a week than you make in a year."

At the end of the visit, he said, "God, that woman is the most stupid woman I've ever met in my life."

Friends quoted anonymously in the San Francisco Chronicle said Fowler told them he was instructed to ham it up by "Wife Swap's" producers. His performance evoked a stereotype of the San Francisco elitist liberal -- the tree-hugging do-gooder who acts morally superior while putting down others.

The Fowlers, who live in a large Victorian house in the affluent enclave of Noe Valley, work from home, but a neighbor said he had not seen them in a few days.

The backlash against Fowler appears to have hit his wife as well. On Friday, her blog, on personallifemedia.com, was defaced by a strip of bacon -- an apparent reference to her boast on "Wife Swap" that her family only eats the finest organic, healthy food money can buy.

This lady does not seem unintelligent or unfeeling at all.
But maybe she voted for Bush and loves Limbaugh and wants her sons to fight in more corrupt wars.
Then she deserves that treatment. Whether any of this applies were not shown in these clips. If it were shown to apply then I would have a different take and applaud the guy's outspokenness.

no. nobody deserves to be treated this way. would you want her husband to treat your wife or daughter in this manner because they're liberal and he believes the opposite. i'm sorry, but that mindset gets us nowhere and gains no blue territory for our team. maybe its time we realize that if we're not part of solution, we're part of the problem. and sitting on the coast, acting snotty isn't winning us any ground. so guess what...

No. It doesn't matter who she voted for or who she listens to. NO ONE deserves to be treated the way this a$$wipe treated this lady. It's called being a decent human being. And, for the record, some people want to serve in the military and want their kids to do so as well. Just because you and this pompous a$$ don't feel that way, doesn't mean you're right and it does not give him or anyone else a reason to treat a person the way he did this lady. "Your two languages seem to be bad English and redneck." "I didn't know you could read." What in the he// was that? I hope he gets fired from everything he's involved in!

And giving her this treatment accomplishes what? And she did to this guy what?

Tell me, if these things are true of her, then how far would you go in your righteous punishment?

And what gives you or anyone else the right to do so?

Look, I despised Bush as well, but this lady wasn't in his cabinet. And people like you only add more fuel to a civil fire that shouldn't still be burning. Your statement reveals you to be ideologically equivalent to Limbaugh or Coulter regardless whether you're right or left. Congrats.

I don't see what all the fuss is about. He may be verbally abusive to people he considers lower than him but what if he was a wife-beater, and unemployed drunk, and was on "Wife Swap"? Would people be up in arms to this extent? I doubt it. What if he was a Rush fan who delighted in calling anybody to the left of Attila the Hun a "liberal elitist" or a traitor or any number of things that Republicans call non-Republicans constantly? Nobody would say a thing because we are used to that, we hear and see it every day. He was also right on at least one thing - few Americans have a passport because most Americans have less curiosity about the real world than watching drivel like "Wife Swap" on TV.

Ummm, wife beaters and girlfriend beaters (i.e. Chris Brown) are also getting a massive media / social backlash. And I have to say that I'm glad because our country should not be numb to this sort of behavior . . . even if it was displayed on a crude reality show.

Hi jazzage. I live in Middle America and lean to the political right. I think I can speak for most people living around here when I say that wife beating and alcohol abuse are definitely unacceptable. It's not even on the same level of this British fellow's antics.

The sad thing is HE'S NOT! He's one of those Brits who couldn't make it in England (his accent is clearly not the King's English), but came here to make bio-fuels? That smell like french fries? And that wife has a bunch of really loopy certifications that mean NOTHING in our economy. I am admittedly snotty about living on The Coast, but realize that people in America are different. Much as are Brits from different provinces. This guy is NOT all he thinks he is. He won't be Prime Minister any time soon.

His wife is also a failure, she is supposed to be some sort of fitness/health guru but she obviously had not idea how to help the midwestern family. A good coach would have gotten them to start slowly and incorporate things gradually, but she just started them off doing things they hated which they obviously weren't going to keep up. I guess she is only good with people who don't really need any help.

This is ENTERTAINMENT, people. Reality television is anything BUT reality. Producers coach people to play up the rudeness, the bitchiness, etc. Granted, people like Fowler and Omorosa are naturally rude and arrogant, but the producers tell them to overexaggerate those qualities for just this reason. We're now talking about it and people will tune in to this dreadful show and ABC wins. Did this woman deserve this treatment? Probably not, but who knows what was left on the cutting room floor. Having lived in the Midwest and the South, I can tell you that Fowler was DEAD ON in his assessment of the majority of people in that part of the country, even though he was a complete ass about it on the show.

I think that the way Stephens walked in wiwth her basal voice "I'm guessing there are no advanced degrees here" was repulsive and Fowler's verbal abuse of Gayla was unbelievably ugly....

But I don't know why the "lib haters" are up in arms about rudeness -- they hear that kind of talk every time they tune the radio in to Rush.

I currently live in the Midwest and have met people like Gayla and her husband who are kind, interesting, fine people...but I've also heard some talk to others and each other that way Fowler tongue-lashed Gayle.... Vebral abuse isn't the sole domain of "elitest liberals", obviously.

Agreed. I've lived in the mid-west, and I will tell you that these folks will give you the shirt off their back (or cap off the head, as it were). They make the most delicious Betty Crocker-esque hot dishes, and are VERY kind and compassionate. You may not have the same World View, but by gosh, you just don't have to discuss the difference.

One need not go to the midwest or the south to find offensive rednecks. I've lived on the west coast for over twenty years and I've found no shortage of rednecks here.

Rudeness and condescension are rudeness and condescension whether you're liberal, republican, independent, libertarian or apolitical.

It's unfortunate that the show set up this wife swap to play on the political divisiveness in this country. the Fowlers aren't as smart as they thinks they are -- they played right into the producer's hands.

Make sure you watch the follow up ABC News story on Youtube. All of San Francisco has turned against him with posters of him and his picture all over town, they had to get security, and he was forced to resign from two of the non-profit boards he chaired.

This couple represent everything that is wrong with the true 'elite' crud... i mean crowd. Add to that they are skillfully programming their progeny.. and you have the true perpetuation of class warfare.
They are no better than any other narrow minded person, regardless of political or ideaological stripe.

As Forrest Gump said.. " Stupid is as Stupid does"
