BEIJING — U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton says Washington and Beijing must work together if the world is to rebound from the financial crisis and she wants the Chinese to remain committed to investing in America.

"I don't think it's realistic to expect that we will see global recovery without Chinese and American cooperation and leadership," she said during an interview Sunday with the popular talk show "One on One."

With the export-heavy Chinese economy reeling from the U.S. downturn, Clinton has sought in meetings with President Hu Jintao, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi and Premier Wen Jiabao to reassure Beijing that its massive holdings of U.S. Treasury notes and other government debt would remain a solid investment.

Yang responded that China wants to see its foreign exchange reserves _ the world's largest at $1.95 trillion _ invested safely and to continue working with the United States.

"I certainly do think that the Chinese government and central bank are making a smart decision by continuing to invest in Treasury bonds," Clinton said in the interview, shortly before departing for Washington. "It's a safe investment. The United States has a well-deserved financial reputation."

To boost the economy, the U.S has to incur more debt, she said. "It would not be in China's interest if we were unable to get our economy moving," Clinton said. "So by continuing to support American Treasury instruments, the Chinese are recognizing our interconnection. We are truly going to rise or fall together. We are in the same boat and, thankfully, we are rowing in the same direction.

"Our economies are so intertwined, the Chinese know that to start exporting again to their biggest market, namely the United States, the United States has to take some very drastic measures with this stimulus package, which means we have to incur more debt."

During her trip to Beijing, Clinton's emphasis on the global economy, climate change and security were meant to highlight the growing importance of U.S.-China relations, which have often frayed over disagreements on human rights. Authorities in Beijing face a year of sensitive anniversaries _ 20 years since the crushing of the Tiananmen Square democracy movement and 50 years since the failed Tibetan uprising that forced the Dalai Lama into exile.

As she wrapped up her trip to China, Clinton met with women's rights advocates and attended church, a day after talks with Chinese officials.

Sunday's session at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing gathered female lawyers, academics, environmental activists, health care workers and entrepreneurs to highlight the growing leadership role of Chinese women.

On Saturday, Clinton and Yang said regular dialogue on economic issues would now include terrorism and other security issues. Details will be finalized by President Barack Obama and the Chinese president at an economic summit in London in April. "We have every reason to believe that the United States and China will recover and together we will help lead the world recovery," she told reporters at a news conference with Yang.

Ahead of her talks, Clinton said China's controversial human rights record would be largely off the table, a blunt admission that startled rights groups.

Activists complained Saturday that Chinese police were monitoring dissidents and had confined some to their homes during Clinton's two-day visit. Several of those targeted had signed "Charter 08," an unusually open call for civil rights and political reforms.

Along with cooperating on the financial crisis, the U.S. wants China to step up efforts to address threats from nuclear programs in Iran and North Korea, and the tenuous security situations in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

With China surpassing the U.S. last year as the world's leading producer of greenhouse gases, Clinton said she and Chinese officials had agreed to develop clean-energy technology that would use renewable sources and safely store the emissions from burning coal.

Visiting a new gas-fueled power plant in Beijing, Clinton urged China not to repeat the "same mistakes" that Western countries made when they developed.

In the near term the US, because of China and corrupt banking is heading toward a 60's economy with avg home values approx. 50K and avg incomes dropping to $20K (currently 30K).

How is the US supposed to pay back these loans? There is no hint of a possibility. With a 1960's sort of GDP, paying back 45 trillion dollars in debt, is nigh impossible. It is only a matter of when we default. the later we default, the more resources that will have been devoured in an unfavorable economic configuration.

"And the end of the fight
Is a tombstone white,

With the name of the late deceased.

And an epitaph dr'ear,
A fool lies here,

Who tried to hustle the East."

For those complaining about Clinton's actions, please use your heads and think for once:

If you beat your neighbor's children and steal their lunch money on a routine basis, would you complain to your neighbor when you see your neighbor beating his own kid? On top of all of this, you are in your neighbor's home trying to borrow money from your neighbor?

China's human rights record is terrible, but what good would Clinton do to complain about it? Do you honestly think that the Chinese government would change its ways just because some hypocrites and fanatics in the US pretend to care about the Chinese people?

As for the rightwing nuts who are complaining now, weren't you also the supporters of Bush's Iraq/Gitmo policies? If you have an ounce of integrity you would be be supporting the blind capitalism which China is heading for today.

I'm a left wingnut and I'm complaining now too. xtiangodloki thinks we should be over in China scrounging for loans, lining the Chinese' pockets. The behaviours you cite like beating the kid and taking his lunch money are bad behaviours. To be discouraged no matter where they occur. Not copied. We are supposed to be different and better than them. A shining example blah blah blah.

We are zooming along in hyper-drive towards a society that in a decade will look very much the same as China's. In China they are perfecting high-def 1 second elapsed time facial recognition technology that will blanket all urban areas creating a real-life Orwellian nightmare just next door so to speak. As soon as they get it down to a science and start mass production you'll see us start to buy it and install it as well.

We'll be filling their coffers to bulging in hopes they won't stop lending us money even though our dollar is worthless. Our leader's most fevent hope now is to convert us over to a communist hybrid just like China. Centralized power is needed to properly control a very large society. Freedom is dangerous. This is the theme of life here in the 21st century.

OUR country should no longer be lecturing ANYONE on Human Rights violations. Between recent torture policies, geopolitical occupation of other countries and the largest prison population on the planet (not 'per capita' - largest period), even suggesting the freer votes for leaders makes up any and all other Human Rights abuses is the height of hypocrisy.

To all the people docking Clinton: You won't have the ability to post your rants on HufPo if China pulls the financial plug. Got it?

If we as a nation, have come to this point and have reached this bottom, then we do not deserve to be saved. We have created our destiny. We have allowed this to happen. We have become empty vessels, empty of everything, for we have sold everything, some their souls.

Give Hillary Clinton a break. Like her or not the woman is acting on behalf of the United States government with obama's blessing. She is not going rogue, but walking the same delicate tight-rope Obama is walking. Do you Clinton/Liberal haters realize that if China desires so it can call in all its markers on us? If China wanted to they could bring down the entire nation and the world for that matter. China owns us and painful as it may be poise and restraint is needed at least for the time being. If not you may as well call us the United Red States of China.

Oh yes, and please continue to send us your cheap, tainted dog food, drugs, melamine laced food, your toxic toys, and cheap clothes and trinkets, How grateful we are for the unfair trade deals that our government has made with you and corporate America to sell out America. Thanks to a spend happy, war happy, out of control spending and borrowing by our government, China, now owns America. We must now be grateful, humble and gravel so as not to insult our new owners.

I'm waiting for the Chinese flag to fly above the American flag, or perhaps replace it entirely. I'll bet for a price, that deal could be made too. Everything is for sale in America.
