Enough carping. Want a fresh perspective on some winners and losers at this year's Oscars? See how "the Indians won" at http://sonofthecucumberking.blogspot.com/2009/02/cowboys-and-indians.html

I agree with those who found Ben Stiller's appearance "sad" and uncalled for. I saw Joaquin Phoenix on Letterman, and he is clearly a very troubled man, especially when you recall his previous interviews. It's one thing to laugh WITH someone, and another to laugh AT someone who clearly has mental health issues.

I'm sorry to bring the house down, but I thought it was tacky, and not funny at all. I wanted to cry. I could see unease and confusion in the audience as well.

Stiller had me rolling..... Which isn't that often.

Whoever did the Joaquin Phoenix impression on the Independant Spirit Awards did a hilarious job- Stiller was just okay by comparison.

I liked the show overall, but I thought SJP's boobs were incredibly distracting when she was on. It was like, "hoist 'em up and put 'em on a platter and defy them to fall out". Instead of hearing what they were saying, i wondered how much double-back tape was involved in that ensemble.
03:23 PM on 02/24/2009
I think Chris "Mindfreak" Angel had to have been involved in that one.

Yeah, what was THAT all about. It looked uncomfortable and ill-fitting, with an apparent sole purpose of squeezing 'em hard enough to say "Oops, look how big my bosom is, I can hardly keep these enormous boobs inside my garment!"
Looked more like two fat boys fighting under a blanket. I'm a breast man, but that was not a pretty sight. Now, I've gotta go don my mansierre.

Hugh Jackman (and his craigslist dancers) were terrific! I mean, the man is gorgeous to look at and manages to come off as genuine (and he can dance and sing!). I hope they continue the tradition of injecting new blood and new ideas into what is usually a snorefest of a show.

However, the thing with the past winners came off like a funeral wake. Why were these people so dang solemn? Even the lighting was somber. It brought down the entire pace of the show. They may want to rethink that part.

Oh and that hot mess of a tribute to musicals....Beyonce and the High School musical kids... WTF?!!....I didnt know what the hell they were doing. It was a confusing disaster.

I had stopped watching these shows altogether, but I like Hugh and figured I give it a see.
I was surprised at how entertained I was.

I think Douglas forgot that Hopkins played Nixon. It was a weird moment. And Stiller made me feel absolutely sad. And if I could I'd have had Mickey right there in his boxing shorts holding his golden glove.

Without a doubt the best Academy Awards ever. Hugh Jackman is a great talent and I loved the intimate setting. I usually fall asleep but actually watched the whole thing.

I loved the show this year. Jackman was great as I expected after seeing him on the Tonys. He is energetic and pleasing to look at.

The tributes to the acting nominees was a long overdue improvement and very moving. I always felt the other nominees got short shrift. It gives meaning to "just being nominated is an honor". The tributes were heartfelt and seemingly not scripted (although I am sure they must have been).

I have heard criticism that there were not enough clips. Two issues here - I thought there were clips but second all sorts of clips were all over the internet if anyone was interested.

Thanks for a perfect show and thank you for having an actor/entertainer host instead of a smug "comedian". In recent times and historically Bob Hope wasn't that great with all of his in jokes that most of us missed but the in house audience got. Please continue this next year.

I enjoyed the show for the most past. I thought Hugh Jackman was great.

It started great, it went soft in the center, Ben Stiller stunt was stupid, it was not funny... just wish it could wind up faster...

I may be biased, my kids' names are Dev and Robina, but the 4th picture is the BEST! :)

We think they're pretty cool. Way to go!

I very much enjoyed this year's Oscar show. Hugh Jackman was terrific! I also enjoyed watching former winners pay tribute to this year's nominees.

Frankly, I was turned off by Bill Moyer's stab at religion. I wonder, as an athiest, why he cares so much about other's beliefs. And I felt Stiller's appearance rather sad. It just didn't seem proper or sensitive to make fun of another actor who was not present. Perhaps Stiller is anxious for publicity, but for me, this didn't work.

The show ran too long, due to awards given (though certainly deserved) to individuals for which the public really doesn't have an opinion.

Overall, the show was a great . Just cut some of the unnecessary awards and move on to the ones movie enthusiasts really care about. Finally, skip the "red carpet" before the actual show. If interested, people can watch this on other channels.

No real problems with anything you have posted, except the comment about Bill Moyers. That would be Bill Maher not Moyers. Maher did "Religilous" while Moyers has done many specials, especially on PBS, about different religions and the common links that bind us all.

Joaquin Phoenix has been all over the news in recent weeks promoting his change of career from actor to rapper. Nobody jammed the cameras in his face or dragged him on the Letterman show. The choice to behave like that was made by Phoenix. When he put himself out there like that he became fair game. I thought Ben Stiller was hilarious and dead on with his impersonation, and Natalie Portman's line, "You look like you work at a Hassidic meth lab." was one of the best of the evening.

i can't wait to see Slumdog now... I've wanted to watch it but haven't yet. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1010048/

I'm sure many actors worked very hard at their craft. I'm sure the media paid a lot of attention to what everyone wore. But I don't give a crap right now. We really do have much more important things to think about. Don't get me wrong. I understand the importance of a little escape in times of trouble. If you need that, go see one of the actual movies. But the self-congratulatory Hollywood circle jerk is a spectacle I can do without. It just makes me gag. If it's your cup of tea, enjoy it and just disregard my rant. I mean no harm. It just bothers me a little more this year. Huffpo doesn't need to make such a big deal out of it. There is enough media noise as it is. It isn't as if the Oscars would go unreported if not for the Huffington Post.

I've always gotten at least a little excited over the Oscars, but I'm with you this time. I actually found myself feeling a little resentful that so much money and news time was being spent on it. I could have done without them this year. ( Maybe it's that I'm getting older, but none of the movies this year even interested me enough to pay to see them. )
07:55 PM on 02/23/2009
I agree that the tribute to wealth and the monied class was a bit much considering the current economic conditions. And all of these self congratulatory awards are aimed at increasing the salaries of some already far too overpaid hollywood types.

When we hear politicians whining about labor actually seeking fair pay and a little health care while so many are defended for pure greed in acquiring tens of millions annually it becomes a bit much.

As for the production who planned the music? I could NOT tell when one film's music was playing and another's begun. It all ran together making it all indistinguishable.

I also felt that the actors rating the nominees as if they were job applicants seemed a bit phony and silly.

Too bad. This was one of the best movie years in decades. I suggest you go out and see a couple of them--then comment.
