WASHINGTON — Sen. Roland Burris refused to resign on Tuesday, rebuffing the call from the Senate's No. 2 Democrat who made it clear that the embattled Illinois lawmaker would have little luck next year winning the seat vacated by President Barack Obama.

"I told him that under the circumstances, I would resign," fellow Illinois Sen. Richard Durbin told reporters after an hour-long meeting with Burris. "He said, 'I'm not going to resign.'"

"I can't force him," Durbin added.

WATCH:

Burris was appointed by disgraced former Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who was impeached and driven from office after he was accused of trying to sell the Senate seat.

Burris repeatedly changed his story about how he was appointed. He is facing calls for his resignation after he admitted trying to raise money for Blagojevich. Burris has said he did nothing wrong.

Emerging from the hour-long private meeting with Durbin, Burris looked a bit shaken and inexplicably said he was under orders not to comment, other than to say the session was a "great discussion."

Burris has faced intense pressure from all quarters, from politicians to home state newspapers to black ministers clamoring for him to step down. Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn said last week Burris should resign for the good of the state, arguing that the controversy surrounding his appointment has cast a shadow over his service in the Senate.

In their meeting, Durbin said he told Burris that support among other Democrats was eroding because of Burris' shifting account of whether he tried to raise money for Blagojevich.

And in the careful language of the Senate, Durbin said he made clear that if Burris tried to run for the seat next year, he would not have much -- if any -- support from Senate Democrats. Consistent with a Senate appointment, Burris would have to win the seat outright next year.

"I asked him if he would be a candidate in 2010 and he said he had not made up his mind," Durbin said. "I told him I thought it would be extremely difficult for him to be successful in a primary or a general election under the circumstances."

The conversation followed Burris' exchange earlier in the day with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., on the Senate floor.

"I said, 'How was your break?' He said, 'Fine. How was yours?'" Reid told reporters afterward. "I said, 'Fine.' OK?"

Asked whether Reid thinks that Burris should resign, spokesman Jim Manley said: "That is for him to decide."

The chilliness that greeted Burris in Washington came after outright demands for his resignation in Illinois.

Burris testified in January before the Illinois House committee that recommended Blagojevich's impeachment that he hadn't had contact with key Blagojevich staffers or offered anything in return for the seat. Blagojevich faces charges of trying to sell Obama's former Senate seat, though he denies wrongdoing.

But just more than a week ago, Burris released an affidavit saying he had spoken to several Blagojevich advisers, including Robert Blagojevich, the former governor's brother and finance chairman, who Burris said called three times last fall asking for fundraising help.

He changed his story again last week when he admitted trying, unsuccessfully, to raise money for Blagojevich.

Illinois lawmakers have asked local prosecutors to look into perjury charges, and a preliminary Senate Ethics Committee inquiry is under way. Even the White House said last week that Burris should take the weekend to consider his future.

"The national Democrats needed his vote, but they found that he hung them out to dry," said Kent Redfield, a political science professor at the University of Illinois in Springfield.

As an old time Chicagoan I would like to say Burris has never been respected by educated Chicagoans he only maintains his majority of support on the South and West sides of Chicago where some of the African American community are blinded by color Jessie Jackson for example has great support here. These people are what most would see as expounding radical racial views and he will use this to maintain his senate seat. Chicago is and has been racially divided for decades. Martin Luther King Jr. visited Chicago in the 60's and said it is more racially segregated than any city he had been to in the south. This still rings true today. He will stay but not because he deserves to, but because he's black and they will protect him.

MR. BURRIS ... PLEASE STOP THE CIRCUS AND COME HOME TO CHICAGO. IF YOU LOVE YOUR STATE AND YOUR CITY, AS YOU CLAIM, THEN SHOW THAT BY GETTING OFF THE FRONT PAGES, WHERE YOU ARE CONTINUING TO SHAME US.

Burris the BOZO needs to be put on the street, just like his benefactor, if not in prison for perjury.

nolitics 101: How Not To Get Madoffed Or Do You Want To Invest In My Plan?

For those who may not understand our Democratic system,

1. Senator Durbin and Senator Burriss are in equal positions. Durbin is not Burriss's superior.

2. All 100 Senators are equal to each other. One Senator can not "make" another Senator "quit". It doesn't work that way. If it did, the Republicans would have run most of the Democrats out by now, including Durbin.

3. Guess what...... its based on the Constitution and the rule of law.

4. Most of the talk about forcing Burris out of the Senate was "politics". It was MSM, the politicians, and
those who want the Senate seat for themselves who have kept this story going.

5. Simply put, many have been tricked into believing that Burriss could be "frightened " out of office by a mob.

In other words, if this had been a financial investment plan, many of you would have been "Madoffed " by now.

Burris lied under oathe, he needs to resign. If he dosen't he needs to be expelled. Not only does he have problems with this, he is a registered lobbyest and owns his own lobbying consulting business. He will probably get into trouble in the future with conflict of interest issues. Burris wants to be in the Senate too bad. I would like to know the real reason he is there

There is nothing that would meet a minimum standard of due process in the accusations you make.

I'm glad that you have figured out the simple aspects of our political system. Now you just have to figure out the complex aspects.

Burris should know that everyone, unlcluding the people of Illinois and the president (not by spoken word) want him out. He has in a short period of time soiled the seat.

Marvin,
What you have said is not true. The citizens of Illinois do not prefer Mr. Burris to resign, nor does the President. From whom are you getting your information? Please do not say MSM. Mr. Burris' appointment was legal and he did not lie about anything. Out here in America, we need to focus on the issues that are making life difficult and Mr. Burris in NOT one of those issues.

heyjoe (first cuz of JT Plumber),
Actually, the undermining of democracy the soiled Blago getting his fundraiser a Senate seat is as serious and troubling thing as, losing a job. But you can't eat the stain on democracy and the secere disadvantage that Roland has brought to the Illini. My information comes from unimpeachable sources. Yours comes from, well, an impeached source, right. Ipso facto and a haey naninani and a hot cha-cha. The appointment may have been legal, but unfortunately the new junior senator is going to get indicted for perjury for obvious reasons. Most people I know hold up some sworn statements about fund raising, compare it to his recent adminssion, and can only conclude that a major fig was made. Re Barack Obama, come on, use that good joe noggin: Obama would like the guy to never be heard from again.
Roland needs to lose his job in order to create more real jobs for people.

Do you, heyjoe, live in Illinois? If not, quit blowing smoke... if you do, the majority of Illinoisans want Burris iut. He is an embarrassment, not qualified for his position, and he's a liar. For us, Burris is a huge issue. And if you think he didn't lie, YOU are the misinformed one.

This guy has got to be the most self-serving "public servant" in modern history. He makes Larry Craig seem almost genuine by comparison. With our country's future hanging in the absolute balance of crisis governed by a new President who can ill afford the least of distractions, here's Burris absolutely refusing to do the right thing and put his country and his party before himself. A 71 year old man blinded by narcissim and ambition.

If Burris left and Quinn appointed someone else do you honestly think the repubs wouldn't raise a stink about that person too?

I don't care about the Re thugs...and I don't care about the "stink" they raise. All I care about is getting a legitimate Sen. in the Illinois seat who can be viable in 2010. Every mintue that Burris hangs on is time and money wasted for whoever takes his seat...IF he resigns.

I don't think so...the GOP in Illinois is deader than
the national GOP! they won't pick up any senate
seats from Illnois....They showed just how dead their
party was when they couldn't field a credible candidate
to run against President Obama in 2002, and nothing
has changed since....

Please. It's that the Senate Dems have no CLOUT. Their hands are tied. And Burris knew that, which is why he took the seat in the first place -- he'd never have gotten elected.

Blago's gift that keeps on giving......giving headaches to his fellow Senators. The man does not have the decency to do the right thing, which is probaly why Blago picked him in the first place.

Anyone who believes that Burris is going to voluntarily return the very senate seat he purchased in Chicago is either trying to fool us, or is a fool. Rush Limbaugh has a better chance of winning America's next top model then Illinois does of getting it's Senate Seat back from Ronald Burris.
