JUNEAU, Alaska — Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin will reimburse the state nearly $7,000 for costs associated with nine trips taken by her children, her attorney said Tuesday.

Palin must reimburse the state within 120 days, according to a settlement agreement filed by a special investigator hired by the Alaska Personnel Board to investigate an ethics complaint filed against her.

The exact amount will be determined by the Alaska Department of Administration, said Palin's attorney, Thomas Van Flein. He estimated the amount would be $6,800.

There is no state law prohibiting the governor's family from traveling with her and the personnel board found no wrongdoing on the part of the governor. But the investigator, Timothy Petumenos, interpreted the Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act to require that the state only pay if the first family serves an important state interest.

Petumenos said "some of the travel raised by the Complaint does not meet this standard," according to the agreement.

Van Flein said 72 travel authorizations were studied, with nine found to be of questionable state interest.

Those include airfare and one meal for her daughter Bristol Palin, who accompanied the governor to New York for Newsweek's Third Annual Women and Leadership Conference in October 2007.

Other trips include Bristol attending "Beauty and the Beast" at the Valley Performing Arts Center, airfare for daughters Piper and Bristol to travel to Juneau from Anchorage for the State of the State address and airfare for Piper to attend the start of the Iron Dog snowmachine race and the Alaska Outdoor Council Banquet.

In a statement issued Tuesday, Palin said she was gratified that no fault was ascribed to her. She said she agreed to support a clarification of the rules to avoid similar disputes in the future.

"Although I am not required to do so, I will set a new standard on travel now by assuming the burden of these particular expenses," Palin said.

The former Republican vice presidential candidate called the complaint "an obvious political weapon" filed just before the election.

The complaint was filed in October by Anchorage Democrat Frank Gwartney, 60, who alleged that Palin used her official position as governor for personal gain, violating a statute of the Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act.

Gwartney, a retired power company lineman, said he was not surprised that the personnel board, whose three members are appointed by the governor, failed to find wrongdoing.

"I think it's really apparent that she was wrongfully using state funds to conduct personal business," he said. "They basically are an extension of the governor's office so I think they would be hard pressed to actually come out and condemn her as they should."

Gwartney's complaint followed a report by The Associated Press that Palin charged the state more than $21,000 for her three daughters' commercial flights, including events where they weren't invited, and later ordered their expense forms amended to specify official state business.

Administration officials have said Alaska law allows governors to charge the state for their family's travel if they conduct state business.

Van Flein said the governor's action in reaching the agreement was voluntary and above what was legally and ethically required of her.

"She did not have to do this. She did not have to reach this agreement and she's been fully cleared by this investigation," he said. "The problem that was raised by the complaint was determined to be a lack of clarity in the rules and regulations and a lack of familiarity, because of that lack of clarity, with long-term state employees whose job it is to handle this."

Petumenos was asked to examine the complaint at the same time he was investigating allegations that Palin fired her public safety commissioner over his refusal to let go a state trooper involved in a contentious divorce with Palin's sister.

That investigation found there was no probable cause to believe Palin or any other state official violated the Alaska Executive Ethics Act.

In a separate legislative investigation, special counsel Stephen Branchflower found that Palin had abused her office but the firing was legal since Commissioner Walt Monegan was an at-will employee.

The so-called "Troopergate" scandal became politically charged after Palin was tapped to be Republican presidential nominee John McCain's running mate.

Good to know that Sarah "wolfkiller" Palin is all about good governence....ESPECIALLY when she gets the goodies!!! TAX FREE money for the Palin clan. Build a house on the lake with contractors used in a government project - then let's see if we can get the public to spring for a running track too! The Wasilla project that left her town in debt, benefitted the Palin clan as much as anyone in town. Now she doesn't go in to the office, bills the state for meals in her own home, bills the state for travel for her kids (what working mom wouldn't want to fly her kids around with her when she goes to work?) Palin's "conservative" platform includes abstinence only - when her own daughter doesn't believe in or practice. Her son was involved in local VANDALISM - both kids spent months away from home while still in high school - great parenting Palin! And those CLOTHES from the RNC....didn't she look hot? that's just what McCain wanted...some eye candy while he was melting down on the campaign trail. Palin and the Plumber in 2012 - LOLOLOLOL What fun this is America.

Has fraud been legalized in Alaska? Or is it OK only when the Governor is at it?

"Although I am not required to do so, I will set a new standard on travel now by assuming the burden of these particular expenses," Palin said.

Whaaat???

Let me get this straight. Governor Sarah Palin fired Commissioner Walt Monegan, first claiming he didn't have authorization to go on a trip (until Monegan produced a written authorization from Palin's chief of staff), then claimed Monegan ran up expenses not in line with his official duties. Now, Sarah Palin is actually caught running up expenses outside of her official duties. Monegan got no second chance. Sarah was caught running up the clothing tab for tens of thousands of dollars when she was running as McCain's VP, and now this. Oh, the double-standards....

No, monegan was fired for not accepting another post. He had a choice, be reassigned or find another job. This was entirely within the pervue of the Governor.

Palin's advisors were smart -- they get her to pay a mere $7000 to quiet the critics with the illusion that the right thing has been done. She never should have charged Alaska the cost of sending her kids to social functions. She should never have charged per diem for staying in her own home, but she probably still does that. In these days where people are doing without, her waste of money is so very inexcusable. She has increased the size of her personal staff, has moved many of them to Anchorage because she can't be bothered to live in Juneau, and her Communications staff has enough time on his hands that he can do a fancy chart presentation to show former Governor Murkowski wasted more money than Governor Palin. So that makes what she does okay? What a joke. I'm not bitter, just disgusted with our Alaska Governor.

Get your facts straight, so you at least look intelligent.

Sarah asked for the investigation of whether she owed taxes on her per diem. She AND others will recieve a new (amended) W-2.

Let's see, waste of money.... Obama flies AF1 all over the country at what cost? His 28 new improved helicopters cost ?? Sarah discharged the official chef at the beginning of her tenure. She has now given up the state owned vehicle and is driving her personal vehicle. The Governors residence was inhabitable due to plumbing problems that took months to repair.

Give her a break!

Let's see. Did Obama build AF1? As far as I know all presidents fly on it. We can't have them flying commercial for obvious reasons. I don't know much about the choppers, but I don't believe he was the one who ordered them built. The two are not comparable.

Palin turned in her state Chevy Suburban only after learning she would owe income taxes on any personal use of it. Alaskan officials said Palin also would have to pay taxes on expense money she received while living in her Wasilla home.

I laughed out loud, listening to one part of Gov. Jindal's response to Pres. Obama's speech.

He told the story of the Louisiana sheriff on the telephone, incensed at some bureaucrat who was telling him that he couldn't send his volunteers out in boats to rescue the folks who were stranded by high water -- because they didn't have insurance coverage, etc. Jindal said volunteers donated their time, equipment, resources, whatever they could to help the folks in need as much as they could, not waiting for the bureaucrats to solve the problems within the constraints of regulations.

Jindal may not have realized it, but he just delivered a verbal slap in the face to Gov. Palin, who is the face of Alaskan bureaucracy. She futzed around for 6 weeks first without a rural advisor (who'd quit last October), then sending that advisor out a month later -- long after volunteers from Internet blogs, statewide church groups and school kids, and donations from all over the US began to flow to those in need in western Alaska.

Then she herself finally shows up with cookies and a televangelist in tow, to a town halfway between "civilization" and those in need.

Is that cracked, or what?

Yes, she is the Marie Antoinette of the North -- let them eat cookies! Talk about patronizing -- but then again, she wouldn't travel to the villages without a comfy plane, a celebrity and photographers.

They should have had her appear with Jindal. Now that I would pay to see!

What was it Sarah Palin herself said once when confronted by a critic of her overstepping her ethical or financial boundaries as an elected official?

Oh, yeah, she said "I can do whatever I want until the courts tell me I can't." She spent $50,000 in city funds right after her election as mayor to redecorate her office (complete with red-flocked wallpaper), without the council's authorization.

7 grand$ in cash is like 10k in income; where did she get the money?

Never mind, Sarah will pay her bills. She didn't take a recommended $25,000 pay raise, but she will pay her fair share.

All these folks who are Palin supporters still sound like their noses are really out of joint because she and the Republican's lost. No matter how hard they try and convince anyone that she is worthy to even walk in Obama's shadow or she continually tries to put herself out in the media, she proves each time how fundementally lacking the Republican Party is. And, if the Republican Party still want to her to run in 2012, then that is a clearer indication the Party still don't get it.
