NY Post:

JEREMY PIVEN is on the hook. He goes before the grievance committee of Actors' Equity tomorrow to defend his much-snickered-at claim that high levels of mercury in his bloodstream, brought on by a passion for sushi, forced him to abandon the Broadway revival of David Mamet's "Speed-the-Plow."

Piven is expected to attend the hearing, which will be held at Equity headquarters on West 46th Street, so that he can make his case in person, sources told The Post.

Piven was unprofessional - he should be banned like they banned Randy Quaid for outrageous behavior.

Thanks, but I don't read Post stories. No one else here should read anything from the NY Post.

This was all merely a ploy by Piven to get out of the show. I know people in NY associated with the show who said he simply did not want to be there. I imagine Equity will judge the facts and decide appropriate action.

I'll try this again.
Thank you BartLA! If what you say is true then what a truly bizaare thing to say to get out of work. Why would he open himself up to such mocking? Hubris of the actor? I am not in the business but in the health field. Mercury poisoning is real and shouldn't be used for an excuse it not true. Thanks again for inside info.

If he truly was sick he would have handled it more professionally - period. And the co-workers would not have been upset. Many stars miss shows due to illness or injury.

He was being a jerk behind the scenes and then left which put the production in a bad situtation. His co-stars would never have spoken out if he was truly sick.

Anyone criticizing Jeremy are mean and ignorant. It has been common knowledge for years- if you read medical and health pubs- that one should only eat fish once a week due to the very real and dangerous possibility of heavy metal poisoning. One supposes Jeremy reads Variety and not women's mags. Why kick an extraordinary actor when he is down? You, SaucyB and all vicious and petty people who make a living being cruel commentators should instead of mocking him, be wishing him a speedy recovery. You ALL should be ashamed of yourselves and find some compassion in what you call your hearts. Very badly done, SaucyB et. al. Very badly done, indeed.
Jeremy, get well soon. The TV, film and theatre world need you and your exceptional talent back in the public arena. And those who aren't doctors should shut it.

You say it has been common knowledge for years that one should only eat fish once a week, and Jeremy Piven is a wealthy celebrity who has access to personal health advisors, trainers, nutritionitsts, chefs, etc - yet he claims to have gotten mercury poisoning from eating raw fish three times a day? One would think that even if he didn't have the 'common knowledge' about this issue, somebody in his entourage (so to speak!) would have mentioned the health risks to him.

Yes one would think that someone would have told him about the deleterious effects of mercury poisoning from eating sushi, and maybe he just ignored them. But mercury poisoning whether contracted knowingly or not can kill. Why the nastiness? The media and commenters should be a little more understanding and less critical. We ALL are going to be feeling the negative effects of tainted food because of the criminally high levels of pollution in the oceans. Mr. Piven is being unfairly singled out because of his profession. KennyBean, it disappoints me that you are as heartless as the rest.

Since my first reply to you was deemed unacceptable even though I was very polite, I shall attempt to respond again. Even if Jeremy was informed of the hazards of eating sushi and chose to ignore them, one being should be compassionate to another human being who is ill. Mercury poisoning can kill. Soon we all will have to contend with ill health due to the criminal poisoning of the planet's oceans. Jeremy is singeled out and mocked because of his high profile profession. Have a heart.

my apologies, I didn't realize we were talking about an "extraordinary actor", I thought this was about Jeremy Piven scamming his way off Braodway

You must not follow the careers of actors from Chicago, or you wouldn't be so ungracious.

People are in huge denial about sushi. I think part of this lawsuit is about maintaining their level of denial.

JP is an A hole. Apparently he was begging other people to take over his part before he thought up this lame excuse. There are many other talented actors who would love to get hired on B'Way. Lose this joker.
