I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Pundits have begun to react to President Barack Obama's speech before both houses of Congress. Below is a roundup of some of the reactions in no particular order.

Andrew Sullivan: A Tour De Force

It was perfectly pitched: a form a liberal patriotism that eschews the kind of politics the American people are sick of. A tour de force.

But look: the politics and rhetoric are superb, but all that matters is whether he can pull this off. The results are all that matter now. He has this moment; it could make him and the rest of us. It could destroy him or us. It's our job in this crisis to support him and to criticize him constructively. We need to rise to the occasion he is rising to. And maybe most of us will.

The Economist: Vintage Obama

powerfully delivered, after a slightly hesitant start, and carefully constructed. Clever because he pulled back from his previous warnings of catastrophe, but without downplaying the seriousness of the situation. Clever because he presented the Democratic agenda (particularly greenery and educational spending) as the stimulus that the economy needs. And clever because he threw a few bones to the non-liberals listening in the form of promises about charter schools. He even mentioned "entrepreneurs" no fewer than three times, on my count. It would have been nice to have heard how he plans to halve the deficit while boosting spending. It would also have been nice to have a commitment to helping those precious entrepreneurs by cutting onerous regulations (another job for Joe Biden?)

David Brooks: This "Was An Excellent Speech"

I thought it was an excellent speech. It's been a long time since I've really been able to rave over an Obama speech, but I thought this was a speech that perfectly captured the tenor of the country. [PBS, NewsHour with Jim Lehrer Coverage of Presidential Address, 2/24/09]

Marc Ambinder: The Obama Synthesis

The key phrase of the speech was, to me, two words: "long-term investments." The spine of the speech holds up this premise -- the examples of Americans who've sacrificed, the history lesson, the implicit criticism of an elections-based worldview, the lensed look at the recent party-hardy past. From Obama's perspective, the failures of the past -- or the collective failures that mushroomed into today's clouds -- require a plunge into activist government.

CBS News Poll: Positive Reception For Obama Address

Eighty percent of speech watchers approve of President Obama's plans for dealing with the economic crisis. Before the speech, 63 percent approved.

Fifty-one percent of speech watchers think the president's economic plans will help them personally. Thirty-six thought so before the speech.

Story continues below

Seventy-five percent of speech watchers now say they were able to get a good understanding of President Obama's economic plans, compared to 58 percent before the speech.

Will Wilkinson: Dangerous

Oratorywise, so good. Ideawise, so weak. Combination, so dangerous.

David Gergen: President's Speech Was "Most Ambitious... We've Heard In This Chamber In Decades."

This was the most ambitious president we've heard in this chamber in decades. The first half of the speech was FDR fighting for the New Deal. The second half was Lyndon Johnson fighting for the Great Society and we have never seen those two presidents rolled together in quite this way before. [CNN, Anderson Cooper 360, 2/24/09]

Rich Lowry: That Shout Out To Biden

Was juvenile and condescending to Biden. Speaks poorly of Biden that Obama thought it was necessary.

Josh Marhsall: Major Policy Switch On Torture

Did I get my sections mixed up or did most of the GOP legislators hop to their feet when Obama said "We do not torture"? That's a major policy switch.

Chuck Todd: Speech Hopeful, Uplifting.

I think this idea that somehow [President Obama] had not been talking hopeful enough about the situation, I have a feeling that President Clinton isn't going to be criticizing him, particularly for that last I'd say ten minutes of the speech where it was all hopeful. It was all uplifting. It was as somebody had said to me, the last part of this speech, you're going to recognize it, is Obama-esque, and I think that it's not hard to look at that last part of the speech and saying he wasn't being hopeful and talking up about the economy. [NBC, Nightly News with Brian Williams, 2/24/09]

"The market is starving for something tangible on which to

hang its hat," said Andre Bakhos, president of Princeton

I think that the market at this point is just going along for the ride. They have NO or ZERO reason to think their wild days will be further tolerated. America is what is at the top of the agenda now.
This economic and political time we are in will not be fun or easy as we have heard. We should take our leaders seriously. Well maybe not all of them.
I believe we have shown America to be an entire nation of leaders in our past and will do so again.

OK, there are all of these investors scurrying around, and they can't figure out where to put their money because Obama isn't telling them who's going to win and who's going to lose. I consider that an excellent sign.

What is this nonsense. I have yet to hear one suggestions from these "markets" on how to solve the problem. You cannot cause chaos and sit still waiting for "Godot" to come to the rescue. The financial crisis is an ever changing problem. Here I will expound a little more...think of this as a chess game (luckily we have a master chess player) that changes after every move. In other words each move you make could become disastrous come your next turn. How do you win a game like that?

There's something really ODD about all the papers and pens thrust at Obama, with pleas for autographs. These are our elected officials.

I am sure they're saying, "This is for my little grandchild," etc., etc., etc. Heh heh, sure...

Anyway, I wish they'd quit it.

The interesting thing about the President's departure is when he left the podium he made it a point to leave on the "Rebuplican" side of the aisle.

Positive and uplifting speeches on Obama and Jindal. I applaud non-partisans, and where serious divide, there should be bi-partisanships, and compromise. The President is an oratorical genius, and Jindal is boring yet objective. Frankly, I'd rather just have objective and fair findings than useless narratives.

What boils down to are ACTIONS AND DELIVERY OF PROMISES. WORDS ARE JUST THAT - CHEAP.

For Governor Jindal, it's important for his Party to always be the LOYAL OPPOSITION - but always find a way of compromise with the President, after all, he was duly elected by the People. Ideology are important guides, but common sense and priorities of the Nation must be first and foremost. It is equally important that the Minority Party, represent the interest of the people, and not be bullied by the Majority. Finally, it's refreshing that diversity is recognize. I hope his background and culture will help us integrate and understand better.

For the President, I love love your oratory, as usual. Your words are inspiring, and to some extent flowery but romantic. But I love love love more IF YOU CAN DELIVER. Actions speaks LOUDER than just words. I do agree sometimes, that's it over the top, and I felt quite embarrassed for Vice President Biden, for those condescending words. It wasn't an intended insult.

TO THE PRESIDENT: - ACTIONS SPEAKS MORE IN A ELOQUENT TONE. FOR THE GOVERNOR, COOPERATION GOES A LONG WAY.

GOD BLESS OUR NATION.

Break is over, BBL.

As one said today, he promised everything but a cure for cancer.....and he hinted at that, too! :)

Yes, I give him high marks for the tone in this speech. He hit the sweet spot. He's gets an A for ambition.

The stimulus bill is a bloated and uninspired mess, however, and the mortgage bailout plan is less than inspiring. He'll have to really work to convince people that this is great stuff if the execution of his ideas doesn't start to reach a higher level.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:00 PM on 02/25/2009

I agree with the Stimulus, TARPS and RECOVERY BILLS. I hope the President can deliver, because not too many people will remember oratories, if RECOVERY FAILS.

And the only way he can convince me, and I suspect the entire nation is IF HE CAN DELIVER. Absence that, I will go 180.

I often hear that WWII pulled us out of the depression. But it was the spending associated with the war that pulled us out. To address Obama's three initiatives—energy, health care and education—with the same budgetary intensity signals a better country waiting at the other side of this recession.

WWII also gave depression America a reason to stop feeling sorry for itself. And with his powerful speech, I think Obama moved us a big step in that direction.

We have a similar problem in Europe. You know why Holland is doing so well? It transits all the goods from China to the hinterland. Rotterdam is the biggest port in the world, volume-wise. but not with export, only imports. We, like you, have outsourced our production base to 3rd world countries - cheap labour and all that crap. Meanwhile, we have nothing left, Fokker? Bankrupt. Philips. Gone to Asia. Royal Sheel is still Dutch, but the oil is elsewhere and so are the profits and thus the taxes. As for the US, the name of the game is the same.

.....with respect to McCain, two comments. Firstly, did you see him give President Obama a standing ovation when he mentioned pulling the troops out.... that surprised me.... and secondly, a thought passed through my mind as the camera panned to McCain.... that it would have been him, not Obama, on the podium, if McCain had won on Nov. 4th... I stayed home from a meeting last night and am I glad I did. After years of listening ( well, not actually listening) to the bully boy thug from Texas or wherever, who'd of made a badger cringe with his misuse of the English language............To sit in the comfort of my home And hear a politician speak like I really have never heard before, well, it was nothing short of stunning.

I've haven't heard anything like that since I heard JFK and I was too young to understand then......I thought all presidents talked that way!

And what Obama said even made sense. although the Social Security bit made me a little uneasy...MIP

I felt so good and so proud to be an America once again.......which I also have been uneasy about for while!

Reality politics...wow, what a change. You mean a budget will actually be real numbers rather than hide the numbers?

This is real change from the viewpoint of honesty. Maybe now, at last, an honest man in the office. Let's do our best to hold him to that.

I watched my friend and Senator Mel Martinez work to lift himself out of his seat to applaud. Mel is leaving because he could not stomach any more of his "brownnosing" for the GOP. He did it too long and an otherwise honest man was tained by his own actions. Good for you Mel but too late! Even one term has scarred you.

I am sure as soon as he is old enough he will be in politics. Another wave of Bushes

This is the first time since 1952 we have not had a Bush or Dole in elected office. That being a longer time than the Kennedy era, but the republicans sure put the label 'dynasty' on the Kennedy's I guess hoping no one would ever notice.
