The role of Secretary of State is different from that of a US Senator. Clinton now represents the entire country, not just a single state. If the US is to be an effective broker in the peace process it cannot be on the basis of "Israel, Right or Wrong". If this administration could manage to bring about even the beginnings of an acceptance of co-existence, it will have done Israel a far greater favor than it can by simply lip-syncing Israeli tunes. Israel must be given the space and freedom it needs and deserves to exist as a nation but no peace can come about unless the US at the very least creates the appearance of even-handedness. None of that precludes criticism of unacceptable, ruthless or irresponsible behavior on the part of Palestinians.

Why is it wrong to criticize Israel in this country. Why does Israel have such a hold on the conscience of this country? I have many Jewish friends and I asked each one of them if they identify more with being American or being Jewish. Every single one said their identification is more with being Jewish than American. I feel this is true for a majority of Jews. So, why do the Jews have so much control over our relationship with Israel when their identification with America is non-existent, their allegance is to Israel?

We have supported Israel in the face of worldwide opposition to some of its policies and have received nothing from it. Frankly I'm tired of the United States being held hostage by a country that does not have our best interests at heart. The spread of West Bank settlements under Sharon and now the Invasion of Gaza have eroded my personal support for the state of Israel, and I say to them tough cookies if they don't want this country to provide reconstruction money for the Gazans. They were the wild child to bush's indulgent father and need to understand they have a responsibility to behave in an rational adult manner.

I'm glad to see a more balanced approach here. Israel over the last couple of years (Lebennon, Gaza) has become somewhat of a terrorist state. What has Israel done for the US lately? Frankly, our one sided support for Israel is not good for our national security.
