McClatchy :

Gov. Sarah Palin on Thursday threw her support behind a controversial bill that would generally require parental consent before girls under age 17 could get an abortion.

She called a press conference Thursday and surrounded by a dozen lawmakers including state Rep. John Coghill, R-North Pole, and Sen. Donny Olson, D-Nome, said:

Sarah Palin is all about control. How are youths in state care treated under Palin?

I am pro choice and have had an abortion myself, yet I do not find this to be an easy issue for me. I do not believe that a girl or woman should be required to have a baby, ever. With that said, I do not believe a girl should be allowed to have an abortion without some kind of adult involvement. Not to grant permission, but to provide support (then again I think the same thing about handing out birth control to children under 17 - it should come with counseling - not the medical kind, the emotional kind). I don't think it has to be the parents that provide this support, but their needs to be a good reason why (eg don't support the abortion/incest/abuse/etc). We allow children to make all kinds of adult decisions without a second thought to their emotional and physical well-being. It's disgusting.

anyway, I'd be interested in hearing from others that find themselves somewhat conflicted in this issue.

Of course, I am conflicted in this issue. The thought of a teen making this decision without nurturing and loving adult care and support is heart breaking to me.

In other counties I have lived, where abortion does not have the same polarization and can be discussed in the open, these difficult decisions and parameters can be rationally discussed.

Unfortunately, in my opinion, the discussions in this country can too quickly descend into name calling and territory claiming. And I think our teens suffer, because we do not provide an environment where this issue can be discussed. So, I offer my teens what we call safe time. They can ask me for safe time, tell me anything, and we will discuss and deal with the situation without judgment, shame, or punishment. It's worked for us.

And I think if the family unit is working, a parental notification law is a moot point. When it is not working, a parental notification law might do more harm than good.

I know others with good motives disagree. I can respect that. But I don't, and won't respect the belittling and the name calling that often happens in discussions of this type.

And yes, I am pro-choice. I want abortion to be safe, legal and rare. And birth control easily accessible. With teens taught about the emotional and physical consequences of being sexually active. By adults who love and respect them. In the real world, I just want birth control easily accessible.

"And I think if the family unit is working, a parental notification law is a moot point. When it is not working, a parental notification law might do more harm than good"

I tend to agree. Although I wonder how you feel about a situation where a daughter and her parents disagree on the abortion. Should a girl be able to trump her parents?

I also agree that too many people in this country (I have lived overseas) aren't looking for workability/community/deeper understanding. They are more interested in being right, which leaves little room for forward movement.

I'm not conflicted. I'm annoyed it's allowed. It's a serious medical procedure that COULD kill a child. I have read stories of them coming home, having complications, and because the parents were unaware of what just took place they naturally assumed the girl was coming down with a virus or something? Possible death should trump anything.

"Wherever you fall on the abortion issue, right or left, this legislation is about family, and it's about parents' rights and protecting our children"

That's their opinion of "protecting" our children? ...

The reason for backing this ANTI-ABORTION LAW to save the embryo, but throw the CHILD out with the placenta ... is to give "right-to-lifers" parental permission to FORCE their underage CHILDREN to carry their STATUTORY RAPE pregnancies to term ... and then what? ...

She is seriously considering running for president some day, isnt she?

Well, tell her this,Flip-flopping is no longer considered as a leadership requirement in America.

By the way,Plain has always said that "Abortion is murder" so,is she now saying that MURDER should be allowed provided one gets their parents ot mother's consent?

no it is just tightening the restrictions

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:35 PM on 02/28/2009

What do you mean by tightening the restriction. She defines Abortion as Murder. So by her defintion of it,she shouldnt be negotiating Murder,or do you disagree?

Because by restriction, you are saying, there should be circumstances when MURDER should be permitted.

Somehow I just know most on here that take up for how kids should not need consent probably don't even have children. It's easy to judge if you have no dogs in the fight.

Of course they don't have kids. That would require human contact, and leaving mom's basement makes them uneasy.

What a world. 16 year olds need parents' approval to get their ears pierced but not an abortion.

Still it is statutory rape. And you solution is to have her have an abortion and send her back to that preditor so he can rape again. THAT is a worse idea.

use the police and the courts

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:42 AM on 02/28/2009

Oh yes, and by the time she gets on a court docket, she will have had the child and it will be 1-2 years old. And as for going to the police, the first thing they will do is call the kid's accused father (who assaulted his own child) who will proceed to deny it. The police will then drop the complaint and threaten the kid for "lying." On top of that, her "father" will beat her to a pulp for "telling". Your glib answer does not apply in the "real world."

Oh yeah, I'm sure this accounts for 90% of the cases!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:06 AM on 02/28/2009

Or, as is far more likely, a step-dad, "friend of Mom", or uncle. Even if that situation is even as low as 5% of the cases of unwanted pregnancies, what are those girls supposed to do? This is a law that would make life even worse for those most vulnerable victims.

Sarah Palin says parents should be involved in their childrens' lives. Obviously she's not a very good role model with the number of drop outs in her family and Bristol's pregnancy. Now she wants to control others.

Either you're old enough to be a parent (no abortion) but not mature enough to make a medical procedure decision for yourself?

You can raise a child, one of the most important decision of your life without asking your mommy an daddy, but you have to ask them for permission for a one time medical procedure?

Give me a break.

In a legal and technical manner, abortion is a medical procedure. Raise as much fire and brimstone as you want, but for the purposes of legislation that's what it is.
