Rahm On Rush: He's The Voice, Energy And Intellect Of The GOP

Rahm

Not missing any opportunity to make Rush Limbaugh the figurehead of the GOP, White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel called the brash talk show host the "voice and the intellectual force and energy behind the Republican Party" on Sunday.

Appearing on CBS's Face The Nation, Emanuel brought up Limbaugh without being prompted. Applauding the conservative radio personality for being upfront in his desire to see the president fail, Emanuel went to great lengths to make the case that Limbaugh, more than any other contemporary figure, is the leader of the GOP.

SCHIEFFER: We talked about Newt Gingrich a lot this morning and now you bring up Rush Limbaugh. Who do you think now speaks for the Republican Party?

EMANUEL: You just named him: it is Rush Limbaugh. He has laid out his vision, in my view. And he said it clearly. I compliment him for that. He's been very up front and I compliment him for that. He's not hiding. He's asked for President Obama and called for President Obama to fail. That's his view. And that's what he has enunciated. And whenever a Republican criticizes him, they have to run back and apologize to him and say they were misunderstood. He is the voice and the intellectual force and energy behind the Republican Party. He has been up front about what he views and hasn't stepped back from that, which is he hopes for failure. He said it and I compliment him for his honesty. But that's their philosophy that is enunciated by Rush Limbaugh and I think that's the wrong philosophy for America...

SCHIEFFER: Do you think that he's that important that other Republicans are paying that much attention to him?

EMANUEL: Well, he was given the keynote basically at the [CPAC conference] to speak. When a Republican did attack him he clearly had a turn-around and comeback and basically said that he apologized and was wrong. I think do think he's an intellectual force, which is why the Republicans pay such attention to him.

While Emanuel seemed eager to paint Limbaugh as the head of the GOP, some Republicans were growing anxious. Appearing on Meet the Press, veteran strategist Mike Murphy -- no stranger to trying to drag his party away from certain ideologically-fervent posts -- warned that the ascendancy of the talk shot host to the top ranks of the GOP could result in a "permanent minority status."

The country is changing. Ronald Reagan won in 1980 with 51% of the vote. We all worship Ronald Reagan. But if that election had been held with the current demographics in America today, Ronald Reagan would have gotten 47 percent of the vote. The math is changing. Anglo vote is 74 percent now not 89. And if we don't modernize conservatism, we are going to have a party of 25 percent of the vote going to Limbaugh rallies, joining every applause line, ripping the furniture up, we're going to be in permanent minority status.

Meanwhile, appearing on ABC's This Week, House Minority Whip Eric Cantor pushed back against Limbaugh about as hard as any elected GOP official to this point. Asked if House Republicans, like Limbaugh, were hoping for the president to fail, the Virginia Republican replied:

"Absolutely not... And I don't -- I don't think anyone wants anything to fail right now. We have such challenges. What we need to do is we need to put forth solutions to the problems that real families are facing today."

Emanuel, Cantor and Murphy's remarks came a day after Limbaugh, speaking at the Conservative Political Action Conference, reiterated his hope that Obama fail as a president - on policy not personal grounds. His address, which went over 80-minutes in length, was received enthusiastically by the crowd, which peppered him with standing applause.

Oh, I just love it. Chief Exec Number 43 torpedoed his own ship, the rudderless USS Republican, and now the survivors are clinging to the biggest piece of flotsam in the middle of the ocean. May they finally land on an uninhabited island where they can do no harm.

White House enemy No. 1: Rush Limbaugh...
Dow down another 200+ points...

How about the White House focus on pulling the economy out of the toilet...
This has been Obama's economy since 11/5/08...down over 3000 points...although many on the left could care less this is a sure sign the investors have no faith in what Obama has planned for the US. That directly affects job growth...you balk about companies making profits but that is what will drive the economy back up, create job growth. Higher Taxes mean less job creation, less purchasing, less incentive to do anything. Why go to work when the Gov't will take care of all our needs. Why would any small business want to grow knowing they will just be penalized for doing so.

Rahm Emmanuel is a genius. Nobody slaps down the far right like he does.

Rush is just a diversionary tactic, to divert the MSM attention. Rove is still the master mind behind that criminal organization better known as the GOP.

I'm sorry - did he say "Rush Limbaugh" and "intellectual" in the same sentence? Don't you find that ODD????? Dogmatic, repulsive, angry, divisive, loud, obnoxious, unevolved, sure. But "intellectual"? When I read that I laughed so hard I just about fell off my chair.

Emmanuel slapped Limbaugh with a velvet glove. He complimented Limbaugh while insulting him---WoW! Not easy to do. Emmanuel is astute and knows if he angrily attacks Limbaugh, he raises him to the level of martyrdom in the eyes of the Dittoes.

Now, how many people here remember that Rush Limbaugh was, at one time, enlisted as a Football commentator. He was, however fired, for making what was considered to be a racist statement;

"Limbaugh said he left the show "Sunday NFL Countdown" to protect the network from the uproar caused by his statement that Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb was overrated because the media wanted to see a black quarterback succeed."

Is it just me, or does this guy have a serious ongoing problem with the idea of Black men succeeding on their own merits? Isn't that just a LITTLE TOO COINCIDENTAL??????? Is there not a CLEAR THEME here?????? In the case of strong black leaders, Rush is CLEARLY saying that Black people can only succeed as the result of a media conspiracy? (at least presidents and quarterbacks, in any case, although they do share many obvious attributes)

If you view these two statements back to back, they really put the pathetic state of Limbaugh's consciousness into stark relief.

You're trying to make sense out of the insanity that is coming Limbaugh's mouth. No one can explain insanity, really. No medical professional understands it well enough to identify it more than simply recognizing it when encountered. If you put the obvious hatred aside in these two instances you mention, looking a bit deeper -- I mean, what you have are the rantings of a man that's insane. If you chose to look at it another way, try this. What level of intelligence is Limbaugh expressing when making such comments? Not much, wouldn't you say?

Rham is just doing what he did to us in Illinois for so many years. He is changing the subject from the lame and wrong direction they have taken us. They promised change and we voted for them and look what we are getting...a bunch of tax cheats...if it were you or I then we wouldn't get a chance at a job.
Rham is known well in Illinois as a coat-tail rider whom worked hand-in-hand with Blago and then found a better coat tail in the President. They will make the President look like a fool and then just leave him for the next coat tail. A great President will fall by the back biters he is surrounded with.

And for you silly ladies remember how the so-called good looking or sexy guy as you call him always "do you" and then talk behind your back...look into his lying eyes. Ever notice how he puts his fingers together a true sign of a liar. I hope our President doesn't get caught up in one of Rams dealings like what he did with Blago.
I hope we can save the President from all of them.

As far as Rush goes Ram likes to get into a fight that is already over so he can look manly but with fingers like that all he is good for is doing dishes with gloves on.

Yo, vin4nyc,

Your mastery of English is like, uh, amazing...

So you say that Rahm is fighting a fight "that is already over" and that he looks manly? You admit that Rush is marginalized?

Yeah, isn't it funny that you can tell who is bashing the Dems in general just by examining the grammar and spelling of the posts? Almost like the Repub voices are far, far less educated...Hmmm...

vin4nyc...

Rahm has done a great job here in Chicago. Sorry you disagree. He does what's necessary to get the job done, otherwise they wouldn't keep voting him back into office. As President Obama says...he know Rahm's got his back. You can't say that about a lot of people in politics.

Rush only cares about himself and his stage show.

This was in the NY Times Magazine after Clear Channel paid Windbaug $400 MILLION.
“First and foremost I’m a businessman,” Mr. Limbaugh told the magazine. “My first goal is to attract the largest possible audience so I can charge confiscatory ad rates. I happen to have great entertainment skills, but that enables me to sell airtime.”

No wonder he was poppin so many pills... he was just trying to make the advertisers happy!
10:12 AM on 03/04/2009
There is a reason he attracks the advertisers he does too. Every get rich quick, miracle diet pill, invest in gold "it's never been worth nothing", product goes for his show. If your selling snake oil, Rush limbaugh is the place to sell it. His listeners are ground zero for anyone selling a product marketed to the ignorant. And Rush doing commercials for hybrid cars? How tranparent can he be for them to still not get it?
