Snoop Dogg, T.I. Praise Louis Farrakhan At Nation Of Islam Convention

ROSEMONT, Ill. — Rapper Snoop Dogg made an appearance Sunday at the Nation of Islam's annual Saviours Day convention, praising Minister Louis Farrakhan and suggesting that he is a member of the movement.

Snoop, whose real name is Calvin Broadus, gave a $1,000 donation to the Nation and said he will always seek the minister out.

The rapper called himself the "leader of the hip-hop community" and said it was his first Saviours Day event. He told followers that he would share the information he gathered with other musicians.

"When you get a speech from Minister Farrakhan it's about a mirror, it's about looking at yourself," the rapper later told The Associated Press. "It's about seeing yourself and what you can do to better the situation ... We're doing a lot of wrongs among ourselves that need correcting."

When asked by the AP if he planned to convert and become a member of the Chicago-based Nation of Islam, Snoop said he has already joined in the movement.

"I'm already in the Nation, that's why I'm here," he said. "I'm an advocate for peace. I've been in the peace movement ever since I've been making music. My whole thing is not about really trying to push my thing on you. It's just about the way I live, and I live how I'm supposed to live as far as doing what's right and representing what's right. That's why I was here today."

The rapper did not elaborate on when he'd joined the Nation. Messages left for Nation of Islam officials were not immediately returned Sunday. Attempts to reach the rapper's publicist were unsuccessful.

During the speech Sunday, Snoop sat on stage behind Farrakhan clapping and nodding.

Snoop declined to say how long he would be in the Chicago area or whether he was working on any projects. His last album, "Ego Trippin,'" was released in March 2008.

Farrakhan has long held relationships with famous rappers and hip-hop artists. He has hosted and spoken at hip-hop conventions, encouraging peace between rappers.

Rapper Doug E. Fresh also attended the convention but didn't speak publicly. Rapper T.I., whose real name is Clifford Harris, appeared via recorded video. He told followers that education is the key to success.

rajdc, when I was a kid I went to high school in Chicago (Bowen High School) on the southside. The school (public) back then was 40% hispanic, about 30% white, and 30% black.......But despite the times (early 60's---and yes, before true equality) we got along. We were all kids whose fathers (vast majority of us) worked in the US Steel (South Works) or Republic Steel Mills..........NO druggies from what I remember. I think in 4 years of high school I can think of hearing 2 girls getting knocked-up. Thats of a school of 1600 students. The DEMAND is everywhere, however, some are policed more judiciously than others. After all, cocaine isn't processed in the barrios, ganja isn't grown in housing projects...someone is bringing it in. The Nation of Islam is bigger in the White imagination and media than it is among Blacks. The NOI membership has never reached beyond 50,000. It is a fringe group and always have been, accept in the White imagination that wants to use it, over blow it's influence to justify their own racism. No NOI has ever been on the supreme court, President, Governor, Judge or held any office in an area which has any influence on White community or life.

No school principles, dentist, lawyers or dog catcher anywhere close to White communities. There is no Black equivalent to the White citizens council. They have not reigned terror on the scale of the KKK. And they are not up and down the am radio dial all across the nation 24hrs a day, spewing coded language.

I didn't use or infer 'leader'. Didn't advocate for or suggest that the media should search for or find a leader, so don't know where you got that from. And my belief is the people should lead ie: do, no promote a leader. Not wait for a 'leader'. There are already multiple 'leaders' in every community anyway. The concept that a community needs a (one) leader isn't one I subscribe to.

I was talking about who the media shoves a mic in front of and for what purpose. And why it's the usual suspects. The media DOESN'T report on voices, they run to the usual suspects out of laziness, assuming or framing a monolithic voice.

What gets me annoyed however is the engagement in extreme rhetoric and hyperbole when it comes to non African Americans and their "critique" of the NOI. There are some quotes to be sure from Farrakhan that have rightly upset some, however that does NOT lessen the main message of self-help and self-determination that the NOI proposes and they put their money where their mouth is by owning farms in GA and other places. What I cannot stand is the rhetoric from the right that tells the AA community especially the men to be more independent and self-reliant but only on THEIR terms and from THEIR ideological perspective.
