Cocktails, Cookies, And Conga Lines: Partying At The White House

WASHINGTON — The White House is the place to be on Wednesdays.

Since the presidency changed hands less than six weeks ago, a burst of entertaining has taken hold of the iconic, white-columned home of America's head of state. Much of it comes on Wednesdays.

The stately East Room, where portraits of George and Martha Washington adorn the walls, was transformed into a concert hall as President Barack Obama presented Stevie Wonder with the nation's highest award for pop music on Wednesday.

A week before that, the foot-stomping sounds of Sweet Honey in the Rock, a female a cappella group, filled the East Room for a Black History Month program first lady Michelle Obama held for nearly 200 sixth- and seventh-graders from around the city.

Cocktails were sipped during at least three such receptions to date, all held on Wednesdays.

Bookending the midweek activity were a Super Bowl party for select Democratic and Republican lawmakers and a dinner for governors, the new administration's first black-tie affair. It was capped with a performance by the 1970s pop group Earth, Wind and Fire. And a conga line.

The flurry of entertaining is in keeping with the Obamas' promise to make the White House a more open place for everyone.

The governors' dinner was "a great kickoff of what we hope will be an atmosphere here in the White House that is welcoming and that reminds everybody that this is the people's house," Obama told the state chief executives after they had dined on Maryland crab, Wagyu beef, Nantucket scallops and citrus salad.

"We are just temporary occupants. This is a place that belongs to the American people and we want to make sure that everybody understands it's open," he said.

At the dinner in the State Dining Room, the Obamas looked comfortable, chatting and smiling with their guests. Afterward, they escorted the governors down the hall to the East Room, which had been arranged with few tables and chairs to encourage dancing to "September," "Boogie Wonderland" and other hits from a musical group Obama listened to growing up.

The conga line formed after the media were escorted out and, apparently, after Obama had called it a night.

"Thank you also for waiting until I had left before you started the conga line," the president told the governors the next morning. "I hear it was quite a spectacle."

Some Obama guests say he immediately puts them at ease. He indulges them and serves cookies, too.

"People like me felt comfortable in his presence," said Rep. Mike Honda, D-Calif., a self-described "poor country boy" who said he felt like a "freshman going to the senior prom" when he attended a White House reception for leaders of the congressional caucuses.

"Sometimes when you're in the presence of the most powerful person in the world, in the most powerful democracy in the world ... I was in awe that I was comfortable," said Honda, chairman of the Asian Pacific American Caucus. "I think that's his style and how he grew up, who he is.

"He's down to earth and engaging," Honda said.

Rep. Trent Franks, R-Ariz., was among those invited for the Super Bowl. He said Obama, an avid sports fan, joined his guests for most of the game between the Arizona Cardinals and ultimately triumphant Pittsburgh Steelers.

"It wasn't a circumstance where he came in and said 'Hi' and then left," Franks said. "He actually stayed and watched the game."

Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn, said Obama was very cordial, and he and the first lady made guests feel comfortable. The president talked to everyone before the game started, she said, including a 12-year-old boy who asked Obama where the bathroom was.

"My favorite part was when he personally served us cookies _ oatmeal raisin _ when we were watching the game," she said.

The gathering in the White House theater over hot dogs and hamburgers was one of several get-to-know-the-members events Obama held as he lobbied Congress to support his nearly $800 billion economic recovery package. His efforts produced no Republican votes in the House and just three in the Senate, but Franks said he still appreciated the Democratic president's efforts to reach out to the opposing party.

"I think the value of social interaction like this is not so much that it co-opts anyone in any way. It certainly didn't in my case," said Franks, who described his conversation with Obama at the party as substantive. "I think it humanizes and personalizes opponents. We can diminish politics and try to work together for what's right for the country."

Michelle Obama is doing her own entertaining, too. When her husband visited Canada last month, she organized a "girls' night" at the White House with secretaries, policymakers and popcorn for a screening of "He's Just Not that Into You," the first lady told People magazine.

Obama played the role of "first fan" at the Wonder tribute, and opened up about his and his wife's common enjoyment of Wonder's music.

"As Stevie knows, I'm a huge fan. And he has been a great supporter," Obama said before presenting the award-winning singer-songwriter with the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song from the Library of Congress.

He said Wonder's songs "became the soundtrack of my youth" and that in them he "found peace and inspiration, especially in difficult times."

Obama presented the medal to Wonder, then wrapped the singer in a bear hug. As the media were led out of the room, Wonder struck up "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours," which was a staple of Obama's campaign rallies.

Our king and all his subjects are partying every Wednesday at the peasants' hard earned money. Obama doesn't care about you. It's all about power and political control.

Is it right to be doing all of this partying while many of us out here are suffering? Mr. President, you have not even come up with your detailed plan as to how to handle the banking crisis.

I personally am responsible for the economic crisis? Oh, yeah, I forgot -- I actually was head of the SEC and of the Treasury Department under Bush -- and during a critical time period I was Greenspan's personal economic advisor

To the folks that think the Obamas partying is so great, did they feel the same way when Reagan came into office 'putting on the Ritz'? Did they thrill when Bush 41 vacationed at Kennebunkport or when junior 'cleared brush' at the ranch? The hypocrisy of the Obama fanatics is as bad as the hypocrisy of the Reagan fanatics.

There is NO hypocrisy here.

Obama isn't ESCAPING to Santa Barbara, Crawford or Kennebunkport to hide.
Obama isn't EXCLUDING the people he must work with to build a better America.
Obama isn't COLLUDING at the kitchen table.
Obama isn't GOING to bed at 8:30PM to avoid the challenges he must face.

Obama is entertaining his associates and employees at United States of America Co.at it's headquarters ...THE WHITE HOUSE.
He is the CEO you know.
10:28 AM on 03/03/2009
No, it's a little different. The Reagans looked down their noses at the regular folks and partied with the rich and powerful. The Obamas have done what our Founding Fathers wanted, which is to open the White House up to the people. The whole article is about how President Obama doesn't treat anyone else any different than he would want to be treated.

Your ideology lost at the ballot box and will soon be consigned to the embarrassing garbage can of history. Go cry in your cornflakes.

How about all your Rustuglicans would see that this economy is aBush economic choas. Bush and the GOP did not do anything for the country, they wre clumsy and in the pocket of the bone head Rush and all the Facist CEO agents of Pharmaceuticals, Military Industrial complex, Banking, and all the other racist bigots like Bank of America (Failure Bank of America). It is time to end this charade. The GOP is done, they went against the stimulus, some Governors in the south don't want to take any money, yet the GOP RFeps and Senators of LA, MS, KY have the highest and most exotic spending in the budget bill to be sign by the Pres. I would pray that OBAMA veto the Bill and call out the GOP for all their pork barrell spending. There is so much poor in their from Kentucky to Alaska with Oklahoma, Texas, Mississsippi, Louisianna and other GOP states in between, their spending triple that of the Democrats. I would call it out for what it is and the DEMOCRATS better get some backbone and go after the GOP!

The best thing to do is have a press release that shows $ for $ who got what and where it went,
This needs to be PUBLISHED in ALL major newspapers!

The White House is their home for the next 4 years. I'm glad they are treating it like one. I also love that performers like EWF, Stevie Wonder. Sweet Honey in the Rock and next up is Paul Simon I think, are getting the chance to perform there. It is the people's house and this is the people's popular music. The Stevie Wonder tribute was amazing. All those diverse performers singing Wonder's music was a pleasure to watch. And EWF in black tie singing Boogie Wonderland! I love it.

But I wonder...why did the Governor's wait until POTUS and FLOTUS left to start the conga line?

I have been working and paying taxes since I was fifteen. They can take those funds to help pay for any future events.

The Obama family is an inspiration to me and the world. It would be nice if those people with such hate in the hearts will judge this family on their merit. I'm always amazed at how much hatred and racism that a few of the people in this USA have for our president and his family. Thank God for those 90% of all americans who have have judged the president and his family on their merit. What a good reason to be an american

I am thrilled to see that the "people's house" is being opened up; and being utilized for events. This is the United States of America. We the people are coming together. There are still those whose goal it is to keep us divided so that they can continue their nefarious deeds undetected, as in the past; and it will take time for these practices of isolationism and secrecy to fade away. But we have elected a leader, and we the people are taking our country back as best we can. It's time the sounds of joy are heard once again in our land. Because of the mess left us from the last 8 years, there are a lot of people who don't have much to be happy about right now. It won't be a fast nor easy fix. But we have hope, and that's a start.

7Granny, there is surely little joy in your life, you sound unhappy. Get yourself into a park and breathe some fresh air..check out a garden. Negativity like yours is going to drive you crazy.

Obama tells us we are facing the worst crisis since the Great Depression. He tells us all we are going to have to cut back, just as he will. So he flies to Chicago on Air Force One to take his wife out to dinner for Valentines Day. Now it seems they are entertaining every night at the White House. Yeah, I can see how he's cutting back. What was Nero doing while Rome burned??? Oh, yeah, fiddling. Americans will stand for a lot but there is going to come a point when they will say enough is enough. They are getting angry & eventually will just not take any more.
10:26 PM on 03/02/2009
Obama didn't create this. he's been in office for 6 weeks. if you really want to direct some anger, how about the GOP and Bush? they brought this on.....
01:01 PM on 03/03/2009
and has held all of six events. big deal. those events are not empty 'partying'. they serve to create cultural cohesion and to create a playfield for republicans and democrats, so they can see each other as human beings, instead of just walking ideologies.

i for one am glad that barack and michelle obama are 'people persons'.
08:25 PM on 03/02/2009
Bottom line, what does it cost? People are out of work, economy in a shambles, and we seem to be unconcerned about the party budget. They are more than likely spending more each week than 10 people earn in salery for a year.... But that is not an issue, those people are out of work, so the money is not needed for their saleries....

According to Frank Trent a guest for the Superbowl party, the menu was oatmeal raisin cookies, hot dogs, hamburgers. According to the Girl's night..there was popcorn.
And the benefit of hosting these parties.. Priceless.

One photo I saw of preporations had Obama's wife directing 5 Cooks in the kitchen getting ready for the party. Cookies and milk, I don't think so. There has already been a State dinner, several music presentations, wake up and smell the coffee, this is costing a mint, oh thats right the only people working overtime are the printers at the mint.

IF I'M NOT MISTAKEN, I BELIEVE THIS IS WHAT THE YOUNG FOLKS CALL.
KEEPING IT REAL! It's nice to see that the President and the First Lady can still have a life along with their political responsibilities. And I think that it is healthier and better for the country, to have well rounded people in charge. They seem to relate and have a broader and more realistic perspective of whats going on with every day people. And that's a nice change for the better and Americans deserve that change,.after going through the nightmare of being almost totally ignored and neglected for eight years.
