Michelle Obama's Flats: Comfort Never Looked So Cool (SLIDESHOW)

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 07/08/10 04:31 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 02:05 PM ET

Much has been made of Michelle Obama's fashion, hairstyles, brooches, and even her arms.

But her other signature item is often overlooked: the flat shoe. In line with her no-nonsense attitude, the First Lady has shunned the stiletto phenomenon (most recently seen mangling models at New York Fashion Week), and instead made being comfortable look cool.

See the Michelle Obama Style big news page.

I'm tall (5'11'') I usually wear flats and heals that are 1.5'' high. I don't wear higher heels because I'm afraid I'd appear to be "imposing". I could care less about that. It's because 1.5-2 inches is enough height for me.

heels are bad for your feet and posture and they hurt like he// to wear when you have to stand and walk all day!

Who makes the boots she's wearing in the last picture? They are fabulous. She has a really great style.

She's tall. She wears flat shoes. Logical if you don't want to appear too imposing. I'm short so I wear 2 or 3 inch heels.
She's middle-aged, her feet stopped growing years ago (just like me). If she only bought a couple of pairs of shoes a year, she might have many accumulated over the years- if she takes good care of her clothing. Good shoes are timeless. Being in my 50s I've a lot of shoes too, NOT because I buy many but because I look after them and they last. I suspect the concept of taking good care of clothing and cleaning one's shoes, is probably beyond the limited brain power of many of our populace, raised on everything being disposable?
This whole debate is quite ridiculous of course because we all know that if she wore the same thing over and over, someone somewhere would be whining that she looked cheap. Whatever she does she can't win. She's on display being judged on how she looks. I doubt this is what she had in mind when she went to law school and carved a professional career for herself but she'll deal intelligently with the reality of her new life. Personally I admire her and I LOVE those arms! She looks fit, healthy and active and as such is a great role model already, in this obese, lazy nation. I'm certain a lot of the whinging is from people who can't get off their backsides and exercise.

She is really tall. It has been my experience with the tall women I have known that they hate towering over everyone, especially their husbands. Besides she looks great in everything.

According to Barrack, she wears flats because she intimidates him around the house. He said that he acts "manly" (his words, not mine) in public because it impresses her and that is what she demands of him. She just might be the answer to the Chicago Bears regaining that strong defense they had in the mid 80's if she has time to break away from posing for magazines.

being such close, personal friends with Mrs. Obama, you should make that suggestion.

Why would any woman, short or tall, need Michelle Obama to make it okay to wear flats?
That's what I don't get.

@OLD LADY CITIZEN
Are you really so foolish that you don't understand the concept of borrowing and returning. It's not a problem until it's borrowed and not returned....ask Mrs Nancy Reagan, or when the taxpayer's actually purchase the clothes for you......ask Governor Palin. But, it is traditional for the 1st lady to borrow jewelry and clothing, but they must be returned to not incur a charge.

Now, why don't you take your sillyazz somewhere and find a real problem.
