NEW YORK (AdAge.com) -- When twitter closed on a $35 million round of venture capital, in addition to the $20 million it had already raised, the messaging service signaled that it intends to be a very big business.

Like its 6 million users, corporations have embraced the service. Its ability to take the measure of what is being said at a given time about brands is a potential gold mine for marketers, and it is the first place Twitter will look to generate revenue.

"There are companies and brands depending on it more and more and finding the insights valuable in how they make decisions," said co-founder Biz Stone. "What further can we do to help them?"

Twitter has probably reached its zenith. I'd rather live my life - spending a bit of time here is part of my life, not the sum total - than tweet every two seconds.

Twitter is so 1999.
When will people get that?
There is a reason it starts with the word TWIT.

I have no interest in Twitter. Brevis esse laboro, obscurus fio (When I labor to be brief, I become obsure). In any case, I really don't care what any of you are doing in the moment. Have a groovy day, but keep it to yourself.

Before you know it people will be twitering from the bathroom, about the constipation, their dentures and deodorants. If you find Twitter fascinating than you have no life. Who cares what these people are doing. I am busy having a real life.

This is getting kind of ridiculous. Every time I turn around I got some news media, whether it be cnn or huffington post, or NBC telling me about the greatness and awesomeness of twitter. It's not great. It's quite stupid actually. Maybe I haven't yet been able to understand it's greatness but I recently joined to see what the hell all the fuss was about, very disappointed. I couldn't care less about what someone else is doing throughout the day. And the loser that cares what I am doing is very much a loser. So what's the point? Why is every media outlet cramming twitter down my throat? What's the true reason huffington post is leading the media section with this twitter thing?

i wonder about the same thing. i like FB, but someone will have to convince me twitter has any relevancy. maybe i just don't get it because while i like to text and i like talking on the cell, what i don't like is having to treat the cell as if it is hooked up to my heart/lung machine. isn't it enough we're on constant call - must we tell everyone?

Well, I had to do a little thinking as to why every media outlet is promoting the use of twitter. I think I may have it! They want you to follow them. They are losing their customer base slowly but surely every year. So they latch on to this twitter thing. Every other minute they're going to be buzzing your phone with "breaking news" updates and advertising. They want all of us to sign up and find CNN and NBC on twitter so that they can make advertising dollars off of us.

It's another way for CNN to get it's agenda across without you being able to respond to it, just like television. They send you a short message: Obama signs pork-laden bill. Of course you can't respond to it. Delete your twitter acounts, if you have one.

I understand what Twitter does technically, what I don't understand is why it would have a great business value. I assume it's advert sales that bring in the revenue. Okay fine, but why does anyone think people look at those adverts and follow up on them (i.e generate sales)?

I see Twitter and all instant messaging as very tertiary to human interaction, especially in these times. Let's focus on and devote our resources to more primary activities for our benefit.

Agreed.
I just do not understand how they make or can generate vast amounts of revenue.
Never have done.
