Cat In Bong: Man Arrested For Smoking Bong With Cat Inside (VIDEO)

Cat In Bong

In one of this week's more bizarre stories, a Nebraska man was arrested for smoking marijuana out of a bong that had his cat stuffed inside. The man, who claims he was trying to calm down his hyperactive pet, faces animal cruelty charges but thankfully the cat, who was understandably disoriented, seems to be on the road to a full recovery:

"This cat was just dazed," Sgt. Andy Stebbing said. "She was on the front seat of the cop car, wrapped in a blanket, and never moved all the way to the humane society."

Schomaker told deputies 6-month-old Shadow was hyper and he was trying to calm her down. The contraption she had been stuffed inside was 12 inches by 6 inches. Shadow was timid but in good condition Monday at the Capital Humane Society, executive director Bob Downey said.

MSNBC's Tamron Hall covered the story and was unable to stifle her giggles as she introduced the "sad but true" story. The network evidently felt the story lacked a certain realism because they played the sound of gurgling water over the anchor's report. Anchor Contessa Brewer couldn't quite believe that the cat was stuffed inside the bong, but as Tamron informed her, "I understand you can make a bong out of anything." There were then more giggles all around.

I find it hard to believe anyone could stuff a grown cat in a small box like that, secured by tape.

I can barely get my cats to the doctor in plastic cat carriers without scratches.

Um...doesn't it depend on the SIZE of the cat?
I know I shouldn't be surprised by your question, but...damn.

This might be better discussed over veal chops.

Has the medical establishment studied the effects of marijuana on cats?

Cats are mammals, true. But substances helpful to humans might be toxic to cats. The cat in this story might have brain damage, lung damage, or other injuries.

As the cat's owner obviously has a Conduct Disorder, he should volunteer for a medical study. In one, subjects with CD are given increasing doses of Zyklon B to test behavioral benefits and toxicity levels.

Let's see how he does.

Has anyone ever seen the movie Barbarella? They have an "essence of man" bong in it that Fonda took a hit out of and that had a person swimming in it! Although the guy inside the bong never seemed excited to be there in the first place.

I think what's humorous here is not that there's a kitten being tortured but the lengths this guy went to in getting his cat high. As other posters have stated, most people just blow smoke in the animals face. This guy went to incredible trouble to build a ridiculous device.

I certainly wouldn't put him up for Animal Lover of the year award, but he certainly deserves a Wild E. Coyote Award for his "out of the box" method of abusing a defenseless animal.

Only an irresponsible loser would subject a cat to pot smoke. Secondhand cigarette smoke causes lymphoma in cats, they have delicate immune systems. MJ smoke has millions of chemicals in it. It causes brachycardia (slowed heart beat) and seizures in cats. In college my friend adopted a one-year old cat from a frat house where they were blowing MJ smoke in it's nose. The cat had lung cancer by the time it was 5 years old. There's nothing funny about it and it is animal abuse. I'm surprised there are so many stupid people who think this is OK.

I knew a cat when I was young who's owner named it "smokes" because the cat would follow the joint around the room jumping from lap to lap and just loved it.

That the guy that did this ain't right.

To Zenith1959: The main problem isn't with getting the cat high. It's with stuffing it into a small container and subjecting it to smoke and heat. Cats freak out when you force them to do what they wouldn't do on their own. So not only was the cat probably having trouble breathing in the bong, but it was likely in a state of extreme anxiety. That sounds like abuse to me, and it ain't funny.

I love animals and would never abuse one, but I watched the video and the smoking device isn't much smaller than a cat carrier, and I really don't think the heat from a match or lighter would be much to worry about. Should someone who smokes a pack or 2 a day in a small apartment not be allowed to own a cat because the smoke is abusive? I greatly respect your view and concern about an animal, but this is a big deal being made out of a small incident.
12:03 AM on 03/04/2009
I can guarantee you that kitten did not like what was done to it. That's the crux of it. It was unnecessary and potentially dangerous. I get upset and make a big deal of it because there are too damn many people in this world who won't or can't empathize with another living creature. That's one of the reasons this world is in such a miserable state.

You obviously don't "love" animals very much! Indoor smoke is very very harmful, especially to pets who dont' get the freedom to just go outside whenever they need to breath fresh air. Cigarette smoke and its chemicals stay indoors for a very long time, they stick to the carpet (where most pets are most of their lives), furniture, pet beds, draperies, etc.
I am a smoker (unfortunately) but I have a rule NEVER to smoke inside my house. It is my bad habit, and I am not about to subject my pets to my bad habit and poison them because I am too lazy or comfortable to go outside. It does not matter the weather, and it gets very cold and very hot where I live, I go outside to smoke. It is the least one could do to try to keep one's pets from avoidable harm and future health risks like cancer. Zenith, you thinking that "this is a big deal" should be put in a smoke filled small closet to see how "not big a deal" that is! You clearly don't have regard for the health and safety of animals.

I hate to break this to the straight world, but as a former toker, I can tell you, getting your kitty high is a common stoner pastime. And all this it leads to human abuse, get real.
04:49 AM on 03/04/2009
Gee, you sound like a real hottie.
09:52 PM on 03/03/2009
Some of the comments about what was done to the cat make me think I'm on some brain-dead right-wing site. The cat was abused, period. Those who find that funny remind me of the soldiers at Abu Ghraib who found it amusing to torment helpless prisoners. Anybody that enjoys cruelty to animals or humans is a sick f*@k.
09:49 PM on 03/03/2009
Dont worry, Gizmo, they wouldnt want to be in your house anyway! too boring... :)
09:25 PM on 03/03/2009
This is why I cannot watch the empty headed women on MSNBC. They can hardly handle the news. If they are asked to "wing it" during breaking news I find it comical. Any person who finds the story of this poor cat amusing does not deserve to be on television and WILL NOT be in my house. Shame on you two.

Aww, I really wanted to do lines with you.
