NEW YORK -- As Jimmy Fallon prepared to debut as host of NBC's "Late Night," he found his predecessor, Conan O'Brien, in his dressing room, still packing up.

"I'm about to start my first show," Fallon told him eagerly.

"Oh, is that tonight?" O'Brien replied. "I was gonna TiVo it, or something."

A new era began Monday in the time slot commonly known as "12:30" (more accurately, 12:37 a.m. EST) as Fallon arrived with a new-era version of "Late Night," flush with his wired-up personality, a classy, comfy set and a super-cool house band, the Roots.

After the O'Brien bit, Fallon stepped on stage with a brisk, if forgettable, monologue, followed by a cleverer "Slow Jam" presentation of the news (bluesy and romantic, as accompanied by the Roots). After that came a comic tribute to the show's designated target demographic: Blonde Mothers.

A possibly recurring game-show spoof, "Lick It For Ten," invited three "contestants" from the audience to lick something _ a lawn mower, a photocopier and a bowl of goldfish _ for a $10-dollar prize.

And all that was before the first guest, Robert De Niro, who was game to play off of his reputation as a difficult interview.

"I wrote some questions with one-word answers," said Fallon helpfully. Consulting his list, he asked De Niro, "How are you?"

"I'm OK."

"Are you happy to be here?"

"I don't know yet," De Niro replied.

Fallon did his De Niro impression and got De Niro to do a Jimmy Fallon impression. Then they appeared in a sketch together.

Justin Timberlake came on next
and plugged a new reality series with a film clip that seemed like yet another spoof, but is actually for real.

Finishing up was Van Morrison, who performed a song amid a huge band of his own.

And that's how the hour went. Whew! No one could say the pace ever dragged or the energy lagged.

It certainly didn't with its hyper host.

Fallon, a former cast member of "Saturday Night Live" with several films to his credit, has tapped a longtime "SNL" hand, Michael Shoemaker, as his producer. Co-producer is Gavin Purcell, who ran "Attack of the Show," the daily Net-centric news hour on cable's G4 channel.

Lorne Michaels (who used to be Fallon's boss on "SNL") continues as "Late Night" executive producer. So it would seem he has all the pieces in place, as he faces competition that includes Craig Ferguson on CBS' "The Late Late Show."

His major challenge in his new talk-show gig is to chill a little. Or even a lot.

"I know I'm gonna get reviewed off the first show, as opposed to the first couple of months," Fallon predicted in a recent interview. "`He's no Conan,' or `He's no Letterman' _ I just want that to be said, and put out there. Then viewers can relax and watch and enjoy."

Fallon's arrival sets in motion a carefully arranged host shift at NBC. O'Brien, who took over "Late Night" from its original host, David Letterman, in 1993, is now devoting full time to prepping his version of the Los Angeles-based "Tonight" show, where he will replace Jay Leno in June.

Then, come fall, Leno will return to the air with a new weeknight prime-time hour airing at 10 p.m.

An hour before Fallon's premiere Monday, CBS' "Late Show with David Letterman" kicked off a full week of appearances by the superstar band U2.

Besides performing a new song, U2's four members also pitched in for some comedy. Letterman said viewers shouldn't just think "these are pretty-boy rock 'n' rollers." They're willing to help however they're needed, he said as the camera switched to a shot of U2 shoveling snow outside the Ed Sullivan Theater.

Fallon also found humor in the wintry weather during his debut monologue as he joked about opening-night jitters.

"New York City was hit with a huge snow storm," he noted, "and I woke up this morning and said, `Please, let it be a snow day! Please!'"

But that was clearly a joke. Considering his level of enthusiasm, it would have taken a full-scale blizzard, at the least, to keep him off the air.

Highlights: Slow Jammin' the News and Justin Timberlake.

Low Lights: Lick it for $10 and ALL things DeNiro. (no disrespect)

Personal Weakness: Horrible interviewer! Jittery, nervous and not at all interested in listening to his guests.

Personal Strengths: Really funny when he's funny. (it just didn't happen often enough)

Overall, as a first show -- let's just say he safely landed it on the Hudson.

I hope they didn't sign him to more than a 13 week contract...

Cut him a little slack, it's tough to replace anyone who's been in a position for 10+ years. Having said that.. i'm not sure he's the best man for the job, isn't this the guy who was only famous for NEVER being able to keep a straight face on SNL? I get that he and Conan & Lorne Michaels are all probably friends for their SNL connections, which is the main reason he was picked to replace him, but there are probably more qualified people as hosts who can actually keep a straight face and sound serious sometimes.

I did not stay up to watch this. I am shocked to find out it was formulaic and redundant. Just shocked.

Quit your whining everyone!

When Leno and Letterman started their shows stunk too. No one thought Conan was going to last more than a year.

Fallon will survive and flourish, and you'll all be wrong again.

The show just plain stank! Poor timing, bad material and mediocre band. I hope NBC has a contingency plan because they sure do need it!

I think Fallon did OK. The first show is not a good thing to judge something like this, but it's all we got right now. I appreciate that not all the humor is puerile and aimed at 14 year old boys. I'm sure that is an important demographic, because it sustained Conan for so long, but I preferred any other channel to Conan's show most of the time. They only got me for the couple of minutes when I would set the channel to be ready for the Today show in the morning.

Fallon is a tool. And he totally dresses the part.

HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE!!!

Jimmy Fallon is an abomination. His first show was a million times worse than the talk show debuts of Chevy Cahse and Magic Johnson.

Watching grass grow would be more entertaining and enlightening than watching Jimmy Fallon's show.

Watching Late Night with Jimmy Fallon is a form of enhanced interrogation.

Getting auditing by the IRS is more fun than watching Jimmy Fallon.

Jimmy Fallon must be taken off the air NOW!!!

I could not agree more. Fallon is grating. Just like Conan it's ALL about HIM, not the guests or what is actually going on in the world.

Worst late-night talk show I've ever seen. Not a single laugh, not even a smirk. The Joaquin Phoenix interview on Letterman was a lot more lively than Jimmy's trying to involve De Niro in his stupid, unfunny jokes. JT was basically a monologue (easy for someone with an ego the size of a blimp), with Fallon only trying to take credit for being a mediocre sidekick on SNL. He was one of the least memorable SNL cast members, how the heII could anybody expect him to become a great late night host? Well, it's NBC after all, they're world reknown for their turkeys. The last one is just about done. Neeeeeeext!!

I LOVED it. Great way to freshen up the talk show format - put the guests through their paces with some bits or singing from the couch. Also the slow-jam news, I think Colbert or Stewart did that too (?).

Jimmy will loosen up, and his impression and overall vocal talents will serve him well. I also dig the band.

Great job.

If attempting an impression of De Niro in "taxi Driver" with De Niro sitting there is any indication, these guys should find some work they can actually do.

Fallon spent more time talking about himself than his guests. All the staged pieces weren't funny, either. The sooner he realizes this isn't Weekend Update, the better chance he'll have avoiding becoming the next Chevy Chase.
