I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Justin Timberlake treated viewers to his impression of John Mayer during the premiere episode of Jimmy Fallon's late-night show. Fallon and Timberlake agreed they do impressions of people out of love, so the mocking wasn't mean spiritied.

"John Mayer is like if Macy Gray and Smokey Robinson," Timberlake started, before self-correcting, "Actually, Macy Gray and Smokey the Bear, had a love child."

Fallon then handed him a microphone, into which Timberlake did a few spot-on lines of Mayer's "Daughters."

Timberlake then explained Mayer's face. "He has the most amazing solo face. Literally his tongue takes over."

john mayer is a fine guitar player, but there must be thousands even better. as a songwriter, he is mediocre at best with no intricate melody lines and, worse, vapid lyrics swimming around sloppily thought out subjects. his success might be his face or knowing the right people or luck but at least he is talented on his instrument, which is more than one might say for most of the celebrities selling out concert halls. so all the best to him; after all, he's not hurting anyone.

Timberlake, the pop star, does a much better impersonation than Fallon, the comedian, does. I mean, I know Justin is funny, but what does this say about Jimmy?

Love John Mayer. Not all of his songs are great, but he has real talent.

One overrated nobody impersonating another. How unoriginal.

John Mayer is a real musician. He has more talent in his finger than that hack Timberhead has all together.

I just wish he wouldn't suck on the microphone when he sings - I'm not a big Timberlake fan, but his impersonation was right on...

you're right that mayer is a real musician, but there are so many undiscovered, much more talented people out there. it seems as if he was born with the right connections. anyone know?

Good grief - look at Timberlake's own face - talk about ugly.

Is he jealous? Childish for sure.

I have to grudgingly agree with JT on this one. John Mayer is an incredibly musician of enormous talent, and yet he consistently produces yawn-inducing soft rock duds like "Daughters" and "Your Body is a Wonderland" (or whatever that song is called).

I don't understand how such a talented guitar player can put out such uninspired music.

John Mayer's music has greatly improved since "Your Body is a Wonderland". "Vultures" and all the songs he released with the John Mayer Trio showed how great of a musician he really is. Unfortunately his good music is hardly ever played anywhere except his concerts and therefore people only know him for his pop love ballads.

It's hard to like Mayer because yes, he has progressed dramatically with the JM Trio and the last record, but he still longs for the Hollywood spotlight and puts out the acoutic pop love ballads (ie "Say").

John Mayer is one of the best singers of our time. JT, please don't hate.

Fallon's show is not/will not be a waste of time...the Roots is the house band?!? The best house band ever!!!! Why are they doing it was my first thought, but secondly this gives me the chance to watch and listen to them regularly.

Justin Timberlake and his impressions made it worth watching Jimmy Fallon Late Night. Even though Jimmy has made me laugh on SNL and is probably a great writer, when he isn't doing a script, he isn't that funny or interesting. I don't think there are enough Timberlake's and Fey's to save that show, unless Fallon can pull it off on his own at some point. I believe Fallon needs speech therapy to relax his voice. He speaks so tensely that his jokes and interesting comments get lost in the delivery. Justin ought to come on once a week and do their famous impressions together for a while, too.

I agree with you completely - I just saw his bit with Tina Fey. He relies too much on his guests to bring the fodder.

It was very funny, even though I'm a fan of both. The bear comment reminded me of that time John wore a bear suit.
