HOUSTON — Former first lady Barbara Bush was resting comfortably after undergoing successful open heart surgery Wednesday to replace her aortic valve, a family spokesman and hospital officials said.

The surgery at The Methodist Hospital lasted about 2 1/2 hours and was scheduled last week after Bush, 83, experienced a shortness of breath, family spokesman Jim McGrath said.

He said doctors determined the aortic valve had started to harden.

Dr. Gerald Lawrie, a heart surgeon at the Methodist DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center, replaced the valve with a biologic valve, which is made of natural living tissue, the hospital said in a statement. Lawrie said the surgery went "extremely well."

"I expect her to recover fully and soon resume her normal activities," Lawrie said.

When left untreated, a hardened aortic valve can result in heart failure or sudden cardiac death, the hospital said. The valve, on the left side of the heart, can harden with age and become less effective. Symptoms of aortic valve disease include shortness of breath, chest pains and dizziness.

Former President George H.W. Bush was at the hospital with his wife, who McGrath said was resting comfortably in the intensive care unit. The hospital said the former first lady was expected to be released in seven to 10 days.

"I am very impressed with and grateful to the wonderful team of doctors and nurses at The Methodist Hospital who have helped Barbara," the former president said. "We have every confidence she is in the best hands."

McGrath said Bush was already up and talking Wednesday night.

The hospital said surgeries such as Mrs. Bush's typically can take four hours.

Houston television station KRTK reported that Bush almost didn't want her children to know about the surgery because she didn't think it was a big deal. She is the mother of former President George W. Bush and former Florida governor Jeb Bush. The other Bush children are sons Neil and Marvin and daughter Dorothy.

Barbara Bush underwent surgery in November for a perforated ulcer. The hospital said the two were unrelated.

The former Barbara Pierce, daughter of the publisher of McCall's magazine, married George H.W. Bush in 1945 when he returned a hero from World War II.

They had their first child, George, while still at Yale in 1946. A daughter, Robin, died in 1953 of leukemia a few weeks before her 4th birthday.

Barbara Bush disclosed she was suffering from an overactive thyroid ailment known as Graves' disease when she lived at the White House. The disease causes teary eyes and double vision, according to her doctors.

After a google search I found no report of the type of open heart surgery that was performed on the former first lady. Perhaps that is classified also. Or is it they don't want people to know that there is a less invasive surgery that is provided to the wealthy, than the normal cut through the rib cage, remove the heart, work on it while you are on life support system, reinstall it, bind up the separated rib cage, and hopefully comfortably endure the pain of rib cage separation repair.

Why do so many people wish her a SPEEDY recovery? There is something to be said for a slow recovery, if that's what it takes to get somebody to have a CHANGE of heart. I wish Barbara Bush a recovery at the exact speed necessary to stop being coldhearted in the future.

And Barbra Bush helped craft and passed what legislation that brings you to your oh so intelligent conclusion? Get a life.

Like saying that the survivors or Hurricane Katrina were doing better in the shelters than when they were in their own homes in the 9th ward?

Not necessarily a speedy full recovery. It is a hope she is feeling better quickly.

Ah, postmodern liberalism. Full of love, and tolerance, and, and, well, not really. Just the latest in a string of zealous belief systems that demands conformity and spews loathing and disdain on all who fail to conform 100%. What a let down. And such potential when it all started back in the day.

It's entertaining when the vilest people in existence criticize others for having the slightest bit of their own personality traits.

Caring about the victims of the Bush family doesn't require any concern for the Bush family itself,

I resent the fact that Ted Kennedy gets the best medical care in the world on our dime. See how silly that is? Democratic congressmen get the same health care coverage as Republicans - none of them have turned it down.

Does anyone recall the circumstances of the rather cold and uncaring remark Mrs. Bush made over a tragic situation? And has anyone learned if she had Executive heart surgery?

apparently, her dick cheney inspired regimen of kitten blood, the souls of the innocent, and regular trips to Haiti to see Dr saramanga does not work as well for her as it does for dick. i am very sorry to hear that.

maybe a compassion class or two might help her.

i think i figured it out. the cheney regimen does not keep one alive, it merely keeps one undead. she had it backwards. i have heard that her children have a problem with that too.

May we all one day enjoy the same top-shelf lifetime government sponsored health care plan that took such good care of Barbara "The Man on the Quaker Oats Box" Bush.

Al these sentiments are lovely. And yes, you're right to wish anybody
a speedy recovery. But are we walking about the same Barbara Bush.
Because the one I'm thinking of was a hard-bitten, ambitious patrician who showed
her coldness time and again, notably during the aftermath of Hurricane
Katrina with a much-quoted "Let them eat cake" type remark.

Just curious. Did she have the executive heart surgery or did she have the plebian surgery where they saw throught the rib cage, remove the heart, do their thing and then reinstall the heart?

In your defense (and my mom's who is convinced this woman is nice), she has benefited from her white mane and grandmotherly image. But it is an artificial construct, as fake as Bush's cowboy persona. Her own words in the aftermath of Katrina prove it. If you want to see Babs in all her faded glory, read _The Family: The Real Story of the Bush Dynasty_ by Kitty Kelley. Before anyone says that Kitty Kelley is a gossipmonger, recall that she has never been successfully sued and claims to have documented every quote from inside sources in case someone goes after her.

What is there to like? Give me one quality. She and Nancy Reagan have got to be the most mean-spirited First Ladies the country has ever had. Both did nothing in their lives but marry powerful men who let them play the "bosses' wfe" to the detriment to the entire world.

How can you be kind to some one who would show no kindness to you? If you couldn't afford a doctor, she could care less.
