There has been a lot of speculation over which sides of the health care debate will be present when the Obama White House hosts a summit on the topic this Thursday. Included in that has been concern among advocates of a single-payer system that their voices would not be included at the table.

An administration official put that unease to rest on Wednesday night, telling the Huffington Post that, "single payer advocates will be represented at the forum tomorrow."

Another source with knowledge of the event says: "Rep. John Conyers, Chairman of the Judiciary Committee and a known single payer advocate, and at least one group advocating single payer, will be there as well."

The inclusion of Conyers and at least one other group or individual should quiet, for the moment, the growing chorus of voices who have been openly pressing the White House to be more open-minded to a single-payer system. The group Physicians For A National Health Program put out a press release last week hitting the president on this very topic.

"Groups representing physicians, nurses, and consumers who advocate for a single-payer system of national health insurance have thus far been excluded from the summit," says the release. "The Clinton task force on health reform made a similar mistake of excluding the voices of those who support a single-payer system... At a time when public support for single-payer is greater than ever - more than 60 percent in recent polls - we urge President Obama not to make the same mistake."

To be certain, Obama has generally shied away from publicly backing a single-payer system, saying only that he would prefer such a health care structure - which would eliminate private insurance companies in favor of a government-run approach - if he could start health care reform from scratch.

Thursday's summit will include a wide-variety of elected and non-elected officials (approximately 150 total) participating in group sessions on how to best go about reforming the health care system.

"It's an opportunity to bring divergent views and divergent viewpoints in terms of constituencies that are represented, all of whom have a stake in health care reform - bringing that group together to discuss how to move forward," said White House press secretary Robert Gibbs on Wednesday. "As I said again yesterday, the President doesn't go in with anything more than the notion that he hopes people will bring their ideas, whatever those ideas may be, and that they be put on the table and discussed, and that this process begin."

All of you people here can do back flips to avoid single payer but go overseas and its clear in any large society its the best one! It isn't perfect but it is the best option! As long as we have a profit driven healthcare system we will always have the problems that we currently do. And again I say we spend more on healthcare than any other first world country while at the same time being sicker and dying faster!

This is good news, but it seems to the author it is only meant to 'quiet" the people--the real voices!!

Shame on you!!

The only reason I would be afraid of government run healthcare is when Republicans run the government. This would be a nightmare. Look at FEMA.

So that's why FEMA didn't do anything for the public during Katrina? It's sole funtion is to shield the government (not the people) from "catascrophic" disasters -- like potential public dissent?

Scared of that.

Healthcare reform is one of the biggest and best things this administration could do for small business. As an example...this is payroll week for my small business. The 2k I sent for our health ins premium would surely be welcome today in my office...Or at least some part of it..if reform helped drive costs down...

In the pact that is America, it is the governments duty to step-in where private enterprise fails. The make many bucks on health system has failed.
Single-payer, please.

I guess I just need to re-post this since the dittoheads must be flagging my comments. It only makes America seem like idiots for us to put down other countries in the hopes that it elevates our standing. If we are to grow as a nation, this must end. There are alternatives to our way of life, some better and some worse. But for you to downgrade an entire nation as not contributing to the planet's understanding of medical technologies is moronic. Sweeden has brought plenty of pertinent solutions to our world's problems and you spouting your mouth at their expense is a disgrace. I am ashamed to call you a fellow American.

A couple of good, balanced articles on health care approaches in Europe, single-payer and otherwise, and what they have to teach us:

Thanks, I will read them.
We can learn from Europe and Canada--but only if single payer is on the table--which it was not prior the advocates speaking out.

Please write to say thanks for this group:

Victories are Good, Congratulations! Single Payer Advocates Given Invitations

WASHINGTON - March 5 - The White House has reversed itself and extended invitations for two single payer supporters to attend Thursday’s Healthcare Summit.

Congressman John Conyers, author of HR 676 single payer legislation in the House, and Dr. Oliver Fine, who currently heads Physicians for a National Health Program (PNHP), received invitations on Wednesday.
.

A great big thank you is extended to all those who posted, distributed and otherwise spread the word and, to many, many more who actually took the time to contact the White House to object to the exclusion of single payer advocates.

................

HR 676 would cover every person for all necessary medical care including prescription drugs, hospital, surgical, outpatient services, primary and preventive care, emergency services, dental, mental health, home health, physical therapy, rehabilitation (including for substance abuse), vision care, hearing services including hearing aids, chiropractic, durable medical equipment, palliative care, and long term care.

Canada is NOT single payer. Each Province has it's own plan, and varies as to who gets free healthcare, and who gets subsidized healthcare. Also, approximately 30% of all Canadian healthcare is payed by private insurance.

What is a 'single payer system'?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:00 AM on 03/05/2009

Single Payer consists of the following:

Everyone pays premiums according to their ability to pay.
No one is turned away.
No one makes **outrageous salaries, bonuses, perks, stock options, etc.
Everyone is paid an *appropriate wage* for their service.
Patients are treated like human beings.

It is NOT on the NYSE where profit is made on speculation..., like a piece of meat.

A single-payer system is one in which we don't spend money and time squabbling over who's going to pay. You go to the doctor, the doctor bills the government, and you pay your taxes. The doctor spends her or his time with patients instead of insurance forms. The indigent don't use the emergency room as their primary healthcare provider and wind up costing the rest of us more than if they'd gotten first-rate care.

It's the worst possible system, except for all the others.

Why must the only alternative be more gov. They are already intertwined everywhere and have set up the nightmare insurance system that they now they wish to fix. I find it hard to believe that from their track record of legislation that this will be a streamlined efficient system. That would require completely disregarding the history of this government. We already have a huge tax burden to bear and this will only increase it.

A good single-payer system would rely on education and prevention to lower costs. It would concentrate on having a healthier population and keep incentives for new research and innovation within the system. The US government is the largest customer and suppliers would have to compete for its business, thus lowering costs for service, supplies, and drugs.

The only downside I see to a well-run system is that people will live a lot longer and then we'll have to reform social security so we can pay for all those 100 year olds.

Whatever plan Obama comes up with should also include ALL government employees, even our elected officials and military ! In other words if his plan is good for the rest of us then it should be good enough for ALL Americans with no exceptions!

What is the problem with extending the already existing system for government employees and allowing it to apply to everyone? If it is good enough for our lawmakers, why can't we have it? Why is it that congress people do not have to deal with health insurance companies, other than to take their bribes?

I can not even express how disappointed, sad and angry it makes me to see that President Obama has not considered having even one disabled, critically or terminally ill patient, or even a patient's advocate at any of these hearings. The article talks about doctors and nurses, sure, but doctors and nurses are no longer patient's advocates anymore. They are shills for hospitals and pharmaceutical companies who want to push their drugs onto patients.

If we are going to have a REAL discussion about health care, and not about the completely misnamed Health Cost of medicine and technology, then there needs to be representatives of the people who need the medicine and technology the most, ie the disabled, critically and terminally ill. Not just those people who are worried about a stubbed toe or a temporarily broken arm

These discussions will involve policy decisions. Obama has good experience with health insurance issues in his family. I don't think a terminally ill patient needs to be sitting in on boring meetings where minutiae of wording is debated and computational coeffficients are developed.

I disagree, when those computational coefficients may lead to another Terri Schiavo case to happen.
