Vanilla Ice

Yes, yes, it's a publicity stunt, but I've been waiting a long time for this so don't ruin it for me. Rob Van Winkle (aka Vanilla Ice) apologized for his career and especially for the song "Ice Ice Baby," as part of a marketing campaign for Virgin Mobile Australia's "Right Music Wrongs."

"I'm sorry for the hairdos, baggy pants, the scandals, the lies, the gangs. I was young, manipulated and I was a puppet."

As Gabe at Videogum points out, his life has been pretty crappy since 1991, so letting him have this moment of "fame" shouldn't make you feel dirty.

Good ol' Robbie Van Winkle - hailing from the hood in Carrolton, Texas. Yes, life was harsh in the northern suburbs of Dallas during the mid-eighties. A true gangland - full of upper-middle-class white kids with more money than brains and a penchant for recreational drugs and the urban beats of the more dangerous and hard-edged african-american areas to the far south (end of Dallas).

Well, good for you, Robbie - you got into the role, made a hip-hop-hit out of white-man's rock-n-roll and sold your character to the masses (who, btw, sucked it up with great vigor). Fact or fiction - who cares? You may not really be an O.G. but the ACT sold records.

Hahaha- don't worry about it Ice. Come to think of it, a lot more other people need to apologize for their existence. For example- GW Bush- his entire existence on this earth has been nothing but a blight to humanity.

Robbie Van Winkle was a proud Bush supporter in 2004. I'd rather hear him apologize for that than for wearing silly pants.

No, see its different from 'Under Pressure'. That goes "Ding ding ding ding ding-a ding ding"
Ice rocks this version: "Ding-ding ding ding ding-a ding ding". See?

I'm with you. I always thought Ice Ice Baby was ridiculous - it made me laugh every time I heard it. I know Vanilla didn't intend it that way, but that's the effect it had on me. Thanks for the laughs, Vanilla Ice.

I forgive you, Vanilla Ice.

One reason I forgive you is because his shameless and unlawful sampling of "Under Pressure" by David Bowie, led me to find the original version of that fabulous song. I was 8 in '81 and I didn't remember hearing it back then.

Also, I didn't try to dis him too bad because it was obvious he felt a kinship with black culture, although he got it ALL wrong. That "Ice, Ice Baby" line was from a black Fraternity step show in the 1988 Spike Lee movie "School Daze". "Ice Ice, baby. Too cold, too cold! Ice Ice, baby. The black and gold!" It sounded a lot cooler when the Kappas said it. I bet the Kappas were as mad as Little Richard when they realized Vanilla Ice stole their step chant and sampled it in the corniest hip-hop song in the universe. LOL!

"Under Pressure" was a performed by 'Queen' and the late, great Freddie Mercury; my recollection is that Bowie sang back-up.

No, Freddie and Bowie had equal parts.

I don't think it even cracked the Top 30 back then or you would have heard it ad nauseam on your Top 40 station.
