Drew

Drew Barrymore is on the cover of W magazine's April issue and inside she gives a revealing interview on her new role, her mom, her ex, and rehab.

On feeling liberated to play the darker character of "Little Edie" Beale in Grey Gardens, airing in April on HBO ... "I was excited to bring my own pain to something. I mean, contrary to my happy-go-luckiness, I have so much darkness in there. Playing Edie, I felt like s---. I thought, I'm afraid beyond anything I've ever known. I'm miserable; I'm scared; I feel sick all the time. And I was like, Good! At least I have somewhere to put it. You know what? I'm not f---in' happy all the time. I like making people feel good, but it was great not to have to please anybody. I was out there for myself and for her."

On how isolating herself to prepare for THE dramatic role as "Little Edie" Beale reminded her of being in rehab as a kid... "I got institutionalized as a kid, and I felt like I was back there. A lot of times I found myself unhappy and isolated, and the only other time I felt that way was when I was in there. It was absolutely trying to relearn to live. You are learning to become someone else."

On her 5 year relationship with ex - boyfriend Fabrizio Moretti of the Strokes...
"One of the most, if not the most, important relationships I've had in my life. We're still very close. I'm just learning who I am and how relationships work and how to make them function. No different from anyone else."

On her relationship with her own mother being "the polar opposite" of a love story...
"My mother and I split ways when I was very young and have never really reconciled."

She has to be one of the worst actresses alive.

Her father was a Barrymore. That's how Hollywood kids get in the door, their parents. Do you really think Tori Spelling was beautiful in 90210? Heck no but her daddy owned the show.

Her father was INSANE!

The talent in her family was her grandfather's and her uncle's----Lionel Barrymore was one of my favorite actors of all time. Mr. Potter in Its a Wonderful Life is what people remember him for, but see him in "You Can't Take It With You" and see if you don't appreciate this man's depth as an actor. PLUS he did it all with absolutely CRIPPLING arthritis (which is why Mr. Potter was in that wheel chair!).

I have only seen her in a couple of things and she was always playing to type, so I can't say one way or another if she is a great or bad actress.

But what she is, is smart. I don't see other hollywood legend progeny generating a billion dollars in movie profits from their production companies. There were plenty of them, too! Louis B Mayer's kids, the Thalberg kids, the list is truly endless.

Give her the credit she deserves. She's smart and she's a survivor.

Which all goes to prove:
You can never underestimate the power of a great makeup artist and a skilled photographer.

She demonstrates a complexity unusual for Hollywood. Though she usually portrays a light and frivolous persona it's easy to see the darkness that lies beneath the surface. I hope she can tap into that richness and create some new characters worthy of the power she's attained in the film community.

Eh, I honestly don't think she's that pretty. She has a very strong, square jawline and it's not flattering.

I disagree. I LOVE that about her face. I can see Lionel Barrymore in her face, and that is a good thing!

Show-biz is quite odd. To be successful, even if one is well connected your focus has to be on yourself. Period. Me, me, me 100 percent. When their older, they don't know how to handle the give and take required in an adult relationship.

Surprising more aren't conservative.

Yes but don't tell my neighbors I still cheer on the Vikes-I miss MN but WI is so much better than some other states I could mention & we're in Madison although I think it was so inviting that more & more of the eggheaded Repugs have moved in & changed things (we saw a Palin2012 bumper sticker, they got the finger) and we have Russ Feingold who is about the closest thing to Paul Wellstone out there at least in the Senate.

What a coveted role, playing Edie. I can't imagine how she'll pull it off, but she probably will. I can't wait to see this movie.

Photo is nice, but I would not even recognize it as Drew B either. Strange.

she is gay and cant handle it

What does that have to do with this? If she is gay, she doesn't have to tell anyone if she doesn't want to. She doesn't even have to act on it, and if she has, that's her business, too. It's her life, she can do what she wants.
