Cat Cora

"Iron Chef America" star Cat Cora (l) and her wife Jennifer Cora (r) are both pregnant, she announced. Both are expecting boys, which will double their brood. They are already parents to older boys, Caje, 22 months and Zoran, 5, from the same donor as the two who are coming.

On her MySpace blog, Cat posted the following message:

OK!Magazine writes about my pregnancy ~ Issue on Newstands now...

Current mood: blissful
Category: Life
"Iron Chef's Cat Cora has a bigger surprise than the unveiling of her secret ingredient on her hit Food Network show; She's expecting her third--and fourth--sons! "It's really crazy!" the chef, 41, tells OK! Most unusual, Cat will give birth three months after her partner, Jennifer Cora, 37. "We decided that having them a year apart is harder than having kids as infants together," Cat says of their planned pregnancies. Their four children have the same sperm donor but Cat says," [Jennifer] carried my embryo amd [sic] I carried hers. It's like surrogating, but obviously all of our kids are equal."

The pair live in California.

Knock me over with a feather! I had no idea she was gay. I heard her talk about a year ago in a very very sexual way heterosexually. Seriously, she was talking about getting her "guy" in the mood etc. Maybe she was speaking about the donor? She's my 4th fav chef celeb after Jacque Pepin, Jamie Oliver and Ina Garten.

Jacq & apple597--Re: these "studies," surely you will be able to provide all the relevant data--who conducted the studies, when, where, study conditions, vetting of the results, dates of publication, etc. Right?

In vitro is manufacturing. From Mirriam-Webster:
manufacture
1: something made from raw materials by hand or by machinery
2 a: the process of making wares by hand or by machinery especially when carried on systematically with division of labor b: a productive industry using mechanical power and machinery
3: the act or process of producing something

Cat & Jennifer purchased the parts that they were unable to supply naturally. The parts were combined in a laboratory and implanted in an unrelated host (Cat said they switched embryos). The final product--fatherless children--is highly profitable to the fertility industry.

"fatherless children were at disadvantage because men were the ones who supported the family" MEN ARE MORE THAN JUST WALLETS. Cat & Jennifer, highly paid as they might be, are not men, and are not the father of these children. Their uncle stopping by a couple times a month to throw a ball around is NOT the same as the real father of these children having a real relationship with them.

"Having an absent father and a stepfather didn't seem to hurt the PRESIDENT OF THE UNTIED STATES." If you had actually read his autobiography, as I did, you would know that it hurt him and his mother a great deal.

That is really different...very thought out and the disclosure takes the 'sting' out of it when the kids are questioned about two mommies and the same daddy but born of the other mommy. Hmmm, you know I always thought I could tell about lesbians and which partner would 'take' the male role. To me, from the above picture, I would have guessed Jennifer as the dominate one...I just didn't see Cat with certain toys. Oh well, what do I know, Cat and I like the same thing.

What is "beautiful" about four children deliberately being raised without a father? You can think that's OK only if you think fathers contribute nothing to their children's lives. Men don't matter. I think this story is terribly sad. Why did they use the same sperm vendor for all their children? It's hypocritical to say that fraternal relationships matter when they obviously think a paternal relationship doesn't. I feel sorry for any child who was conceived between total strangers and raised without ever knowing his or her natural parent (this goes for straight or gay couples who buy eggs and sperm). We've already seen how painful it is for many adopted children not to know where they came from. Now more and more people are manufacturing children artificially and blithely ignoring the role that identity and history play in a child's self-concept. Not to mention the fact that a man can't be a mother and a woman can't be a father. If you think four fatherless children is "beautiful" then you probably LOVE what the Octomom is doing.

There have been numerous studies done to show that a child suffers more without two parents than with two parents of the same sex-whether or not it's fathers or mothers. You are living in the 19th century. I would think that you'd be celebrating the FACT that these two women are BOTH capable of supporting their children. Cat Cora is an accomplished CHEF and resturant OWNER. Compare this with Octupmom who is unemployed, living with her mother, already HAD six kids, and who doesn't seem to know what she wants to be when/if she finally grows up. Those fourteen kids are being raised in chaos. This does not seem to be true for the Cora brood. They both KNOW this donor obviously and it is THEIR BUSINESS, and ONLY their business who is the 'father figure' in these children's lives. Having an absent father and a stepfather didn't seem to hurt the PRESIDENT OF THE UNTIED STATES. Bottom line is : these children are going to be loved and cared for. As for your rambling bout 'adoption'-you are sounding more like a member of PETA than a rational human being. People shouldn't have children of their own-by whatever means and should always adopt? These children are not being 'manufactured'-in vitro is NOT 'manufacturing'. Cloning is manufacturing. Android-building is manufacturing.

CONGRATULATIONS TO BOTH THE CORAS!!!

In the past, fatherless children were at disadvantage because men were the ones who supported the family, and families headed by single parents, especially mothers, were at huge disadvantage. Studies have shown that what is important in the development of children is having positive role models, whether that be a teacher who acts as mentor for a child whose father/mother is around but working all the time OR an uncle who takes his nephew to soccer practices when the parents aren't able to. The positive role models can be parents, but they don't have to be. I'm sure many people can attest to the fact that having your natural parents around isn't always the best thing. Furthermore, I've known adopted people who weren't in pain AT ALL. Curious, maybe, but happy that they had wonderful families. That's what happens when you are raised by loving parents who are able to give you everything you need, both financially and emotionally.

Four children, whose parents are loving, committed, and financially and emotionally able to care for them, is beautiful. I think that would exclude Octomom, and well as Bristol Palin and ex-"fiance" Levi.

It is wonderful that the two are having children, but the embryo switch is a little bizarre. I wonder if it invokes any of the laws that have been written concerning surrogacy.

Those boys are going to be driven nuts. I was raised by my gramma and mom and believe me two women together under the same roof = madness.
05:28 PM on 03/12/2009
I'm so confused by that article.

Interesting... I didn't know Cat was a lesbian. She is very good looking, too. Then again, her wife is, too, so they're both lucky.

That's quite a concept for them to be surrogates for each others' baby. I guess it strengthens their ties to each child.

I don't know if this is technically the right terminology, but I presume they used in vitro fertilization. I believe that process usually produces several embryos. They show a lot of responsibility, wisdom, and restraint by resisting the urge to get all of the embryos implanted at once. And at least Cat has a stable career to support the family. Maybe Jennifer does, too, I don't know. It sounds like they aren't making the same mistakes as Octomom.

Not in vitro. I was present the whole time. They are great.

Hillarious Headline!!! Thanks!!! . . . I mean Really !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Man, that's great! Folks having kids who can actually afford them...what a concept!

Congrats to the couple, although as a very homo friendly hetero, I have to confess to a little jealousy - they are a HOT pair. I would only hope they were good enough friends with the sperm donor to effect the donation in the um, usual way.

I guess that's too much to hope for, though...somehow the idea of these two beauties and a turkey baster just doesn't seem right.

Can you imagine what the "pickles and ice cream" budget is like in that house?
11:24 AM on 03/12/2009
She looks short. Anyone know how tall Mrs. Cora is?

Anyway, congrats, I guess. I think they're kinda cheating at it, though. (I kid, I kid!)
07:59 PM on 03/12/2009
Yup, she's short, reportedly just shy of 5' (some say she's 4'11"). But then in my family that's about average (kinda). I'm a fan of hers - was unaware of her romantic life, but who cares... She's got talent, is very photogenic and seems to be a nice person. I wish them the best.

Interesting counter story to the horror of the Nadya Suleman story. Here's a couple carefully planning a family and being responsible (able to provide for them without a media circus, Dr. Phil, etc., disrupting the family's comings and goings). To those who oppose gay marriage, take heed: which home would you rather grow up in?

isn't divorce always a freeking nightmare?
07:01 PM on 03/13/2009
What did you say about Bristol Palin and Levi Whatshisname last summer? If you didn't say the same thing, your bias is showing and embarrassing the hell out of ME!
You know what MIGHT make the 'event of a divorce' LESS of a nightmare in this situation? Giving gay/lesbian couples the same LEGAL rights that heterosexual married couples have. PERIOD.

I don'tt get the using the same donor part. What happens if the relationship does not work out and they split and get with other partners, especially if the split is very hostile. The kids would after all be half brothers/sisters?
05:04 PM on 03/12/2009
Right- the same as if a father had two marriages that produced children- I am not seeing a problem here.
