DETROIT — Former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick is out of jail. His ex-lover and top aide, Christine Beatty, still has weeks behind bars. But their text messages to one another _ the source of their political implosion and Detroit's global embarrassment _ continue to hit the public.

A new batch _ 682 pages in all _ was released Monday. Kilpatrick's attorneys on Tuesday filed a $100 million lawsuit against SkyTel, the company that released the messages to the news media. The lawsuit argues that releasing the messages violated the former mayor's rights. SkyTel counters it was compelled by court orders to release them.

The text messages detail more of Kilpatrick's explicit sexual escapades, and include intriguing messages involving family members and City Hall staffers.

Wayne County Circuit Judge Timothy Kenny last week said the messages might be "shedding light on government misconduct," but there didn't appear to be anything obvious in the short bursts of expression.

There's Kilpatrick's wife, Carlita, texting her straying husband in May 2003 that she "had a bad dream last night ... that you had a girlfriend."

There's also a text by Kilpatrick's sister, Ayanna, who takes a dim view of her hometown.

"How do you educate voters in a city full of idiots...?!" she told Beatty and her brother.

The messages, in the thousands, are just a fraction of the hundreds of thousands possessed by the Wayne County prosecutor's office for use in the criminal case against Beatty and Kilpatrick. They had been filed with the court as part of the prosecution's effort to prove the messages' authenticity.

Kilpatrick and Beatty were charged with perjury and other crimes last year after texts published by the Detroit Free Press contradicted their courtroom denials of an affair. The pair had testified in a civil lawsuit brought by police officers who said their careers were ruined by Kilpatrick because of suspicions about his inner circle.

Kilpatrick and Beatty each pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice. The ex-mayor left jail in February after 99 days and has been granted a probation transfer to Texas so he can take a high-tech sales job. His old paramour, a friend since high school, is due to be released April 15.

The messages had been under seal while prosecutors and Beatty's defense team wrangled over their admissibility as evidence. But after her guilty plea, the Free Press asked a judge to release them.

"Enough is enough," Beatty lawyer Mayer Morganroth said Monday in explaining why he didn't pursue an appeal.

The messages on city-issued pagers show Beatty as the loyal lover, relying on Kilpatrick for her physical and emotional needs as her marriage hits the rocks.

"I love how you can make me feel by just looking at me!" she wrote in December 2002.

Earlier that year, Beatty recalled the first time they had sex when she returned to Detroit after attending Howard University.

"At that time I was trying to make a teenage fantasy come true!" Kilpatrick replied.

In 2003, he wrote: "Nobody has ever, imean ever, excited me like you."

Well, maybe not. The messages show Kilpatrick exchanging sexual innuendo with other women. "I wish you could have two wives," one of them wrote.

The texts are mostly between Kilpatrick and Beatty, but communications with their spouses and other high-ranking city officials are part of the package, too:

In a September 2003 text to a staffer, Carlita Kilpatrick wrote that she didn't want to be dinner host to Detroit rapper Eminem. "I thought we were going to his house. When did it become mine."

And in January 2004, four years before Kilpatrick was charged with felonies that would end his reign at City Hall, a spokesman texted him and others that Kym Worthy, who would end up helping bring Kilpatrick down, was appointed Wayne County prosecutor.

"That's too bad!" replied city attorney Ruth Carter.

Why is this news?

I doubt you'd be asking that question if this was a Republican mayor.

These messages were sent over taxpayer funded pagers. They are public records.

Not matter how they were sent they are of a personal nature. Why would anyone want to see personal text messages between lovers? ...people they don't even know.

Of course there couldn't possibly be any connection to his ethnic heritage and the release of these. Just because there seems to be an onslot of attempts to discrete black politicians by the conservatives right now doesn't mean there's a connection, either. We are Christian America, and we do believe in forgiveness. :-)

Here it is again. The black man is being held down by the white man. Always the victim.

Why are this guy's private text messages being released to the public, if they don't even concern illegal activities? There need to be better privacy rights laws in this country.

You have no privacy when you use tax payers devices. The tax payers of Detroit paid his bill and there is no privacy when public money is being used.

People like Kwame Kilpatrick always land on their feet. He's done his time, he should be free to seek and find employment and move on with his life.

It's a shame that that so many family members, especially spouses and children, have to be further embarrassed by the unnecessary release of these text messages.

With all the real issues facing the American public, who cares about sex between adults? As long as he wasn't extorting public funds to pay for his private affairs, it is none of our business. A public official has a right to a private life too. We need to respect that. His extra-marital affairs are between him and his wife. Plenty of you have worst skeletons in your closets than this guy. At least he wasn't acting like Larry Craig.....

The City of Detroit lost $8 million in this scandal. Two police officers were fired over their knowledge of this affair. They sued the city and won.

THAT is why it is important. So it never happens again.

Isn't that the issue, though? I don't care about the affair-- I think it's tacky, but no one's business. But the issue is that he used government cell phones to conduct the affair, costing the city. Add to that the accusation that he attempted to cover the affair and the ensuing lawsuit (didn't he fire someone, who sued the city for wrongful termination) a lawsuit that cost like $4 million, or something like that... yeah, that matters. That's using taxpayer money to conduct and then cover up your affair. That's not okay.

You have not been following the story... At all. He went to jail not for Adultery, but for lying about it in court. He tried to fire city empolyees who had done nothing wrong, and then lied about it under oath in an attempt to cover up the scandal. I think the City of Detroit should sue him to get their money back.

And besides, what's the difference between him and Larry Craig? Still adultery right?

Its not the affairs that are ever dangerous. its the repurcussions, the blackmail etc.

If say you found out about the affair and the mayor found out that you found out.

How secure do your think your life is now?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:09 PM on 03/10/2009

Was he not convicted for that? Why did the prosecutors not get a better deal in punishment that what her received in jail time? Why was it necessary to try to demean his entire family. What did his wife do wrong????? Why was what his wife said necessary to be leaked??? Could they not have blocked that out the same way they blocked e-mails unprosecuted White criminal were sending each other in the U.S. attorney firings. Like someone said in a post above, which I wholeheartedly supported, Whites just can't wait to demean Blacks! If you call it playing the race card, which is what White people always yell to get a Black person to back down in exposing them for what they are, then it is playing the race card! What is important nowis our economy. Kwame Patrick has already served time for his crimes relating to these e-mails. If we have to leak everything Whites are doing in this country that are being covered up by other Whites, all the internet sites, newspapers and television media would be running for a year and still we won't not have any time for any other news!

We need to be continually reminded of what these two were up to. This is the ex-mayor, who when forced to step down, told the city of Detroit "you've set me up for my comeback".

This is also the man who walks out of jail and is offered a $100,000 a year plus job in Dallas because, according to the owner of the company, he has "charisma". Oh yeah, the owner of the company he will be working for laid off 250 people the same week he hired the Kwamster. Guess they didn't have any charisma.

He screwed over Detroit more than he did his paramours. He is an embarrassment to the entire state.

true, true. And he owes Detroit $1,000,000 for all this crap! I know the job situation is shady with all the layoffs going on. He is supposed to be making between $300,000-$400,000. He ironically needs to make this much to be able to pay back the million in five years by court order.

He was the Golden Boy', supposed to be a neverending rising star....funny how things change!

FRONT PAGE OF THE HUFF??!! WOW.

No it exposes the level of corruption and the corrupt people that they surronded themselves with. Like Governor Jennifer Granholm appointing unethical Ruth Carter judge to 36th District Court. Ruth Carter needs to be disbarred from praticing law. Ruth Carter got her position because she was sleeping with Kwame Klpatrick father Bernard Kilpatrick... Ruth Carter was a criminal prosecutor for the Wayne County prosecutor's office and this trick had no civil experience but shr incompentant self took that position. And it is also revealed in the text messages that she mislead the Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox in an investigation. Those text messages needs to be exposed because it is showing jut who in the various forms of government in Michigan is corrupt.

No because a girl was mur-dered during this time frame. She was a dancer who entertained the Mayor at a party at the Mansion. His wife walked in and be.at the girl. Someone sh.ot her months later. Rumor is that Beatty ordered the hit. The texts are evidence.
