Opponents of the Employee Free Choice Act are actively pushing a new non-partisan study showing that the lead sponsor of the legislation, Senator Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), received more donations from the labor sector ($1.64 million) since 1989 than any of his colleagues.

The findings, compiled by the Center for Responsive Politics, drive home the classic, cynical, premise that politics is determined by quid-pro-quos. But if that is the standard being set for this debate, then EFCA's foes have a far more daunting fight on their hands.

That's because some of the legislation's chief opponents in Congress have received millions upon millions of dollars from business interests over the course of their careers, and only a pittance from labor. This includes the top ranks of the Republican Party.

After the Employee Free Choice Act was introduced on Tuesday, Danny Diaz, a Republican operative working against the legislation's passage, sent to reporters a compilation of quotes attacking the union-backed measure. Below are the names of the officials quoted with a list of the amount of money they've received from business and labor political action committees.

Sen. Lamar Alexander -- since 2002 $2.79 million from business Political Action Committees (82 percent of PAC donations) $15,000 from labor PACS (statistically, zero percent)

House Minority Leader John Boehner - since 1989
$7.48 million from business PACS (94 percent)
$200,000 from labor (three percent)

Minority Whip Eric Cantor - since 2000
$5.34 million from business PACS (93 percent)
$42,500 from labor PACS (one percent)

Sen. John Ensign - since 1994
$5.4 million from business PACS (86 percent)
$59,200 from labor PACS (one percent)

Sen. Mike Enzi - since 1996
$3 million from business PACS (89 percent)
$37,500 from labor PACS (one percent)

Story continues below
advertisement

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell - since 1989
$7.79 million from business PACS (87 percent)
$43,750 from labor PACS (zero percent)

Rep. Buck McKeon - since 1992
$2.2 million from business PACS (90 percent)
$112,00 from labor PACS (five percent)

Rep. Joe Pitts - since 1996
$1.39 million from business PACS (91 percent)
$32,000 from labor PACS (two percent)

Sen. John Thune - since 1996
$2.5 million from business PACS (71 percent)
$12,000 from labor PACS (zero percent)

* The figures are estimations taken from the Center for Responsive Politics

To be sure, not all business groups are actively engaged in the EFCA fight. Some, though relatively few, are comfortable with the legislation's passage. Moreover, there is a far deeper pool of business PACs willing to donate to politicians than labor ones. But this line of attack only adds to the notion that the business community is bringing more financial clout to the fight. Indeed, the Chamber of Commerce -- the leading force behind killing EFCA in Congress -- spent more on lobbying in 2008 than all labor unions combined. The source of that information: the Center for Responsive Politics.

In fact, the most telling statistic about how skewed this fight actually is might just come from the same study that EFCA's opponents now quote. Since 1989, Harkin -- the lead sponsor of the current bill -- has received $4.3 million in contributions from business PACS, more than 2.5 times what he took in from labor.

If a critical mass of Americans can't wake up during this crisis I don't think they ever will. Decades of propaganda has done lasting damage.

Employees at my company took a pay cut recently. Our European counterparts are protected because of labor laws. They didn't get the pay cut . They also get 6 months maternity/paternity leave. Is this Socialism? What's the bad part again?

Americans have learned to live in fear and believe what fear the GOP and employers can instill in your mind. Its called conditioning and weve had it all our lives. Obama brought change with out fear. We must be sure he succeeds. This kink of person willing to serve the people as the peoples pres needs to be admired and believed in as we will never again see this in our lifetime. He is a brilliant man and admits to being "neighborhood people". Hopefully he can and will remain strong against those that hate America and we must strongly show full support. I would think we all need to be sure we call his white house line weekly and reassure this fact that WE THE PEOPLE HAVE HIS BACK AND FULLY SUPPORT HIM. I'm sure day after day must wear on him. It never lets up!

Labor Laws in Europe also require four weeks vacation, and 12 weeks notice for termination or layoff.

4 weeks of vacation sounds good to me...
this 1 to 2 weeks is ridiculous!
Same with working 5 days a week to get 2 days off...
how about 4 and 3?
There's more to life than working!

It turns their "rigidity" is an actual plus for their economies. Read an excellent opinion piece from Paul De Grauwe in Financial Times:

http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/f9e3fee4-0117-11de-8f6e-000077b07658.html

“Rigid economies” have been chastised for having too generous social security systems. They pay their unemployed too much for too long. It now turns out that this ultimate source of rigidity is a great advantage. The workers that are made redundant in the rigid countries will have higher unemployment benefits that will sustain consumption and reduce the fall in prices. The debt deflation dynamics hit a floor."

Those of us who support this bill have a fight on our hands. We all need to call and write our congressional leaders and senators and make sure our voices are heard on this. The opponents of this bill have sunk a ton of money into killing this bill so we have to put the grassroots to work ASAP!!!

We haven't been on an even playing field since Reagan took over. It is worse now that the few elitists have taken over the Republican party. Hopefully we have a President who is not afraid of offending republicans anymore and a Congress who will step up so the middle class can rebound.

Unions have declined I remember since the air traffic controllers were all fired! I want to remember this as Reagans legacy to break unions.and the the unions really lost momentum after that. That was the beginning of the end of union strength.

On August 3, 1981 nearly 13,000 of the 17,500 members of the Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization (PATCO) walked off the job,
that same day, President Reagan responded with a stern ultimatum: The strikers were to return to work within 48 hours or face termination

It's time to take it back and become one with solidarity!

Republicans give Reagan god-like status, but he tried and partially succeeded in busting up unions. Without unions and labor laws workers would be exploited like they were during the industrial revolution and as they are now in India and China.

If the Republicans are so sure that President Obamas stimulus pkg. and any other policies he may have are going to fell, why don't they just sit back and let them fell.

These morons don't know which way is up. All they do is fight President Obama on everything. If the republicans are right and President Obamas policies fall apart, the lard a... will be back in power.

I voted for President Obama and I am sick and tired of hearing the republican politics. If I would have wanted these a..holes in office, I would have voted for Senator McCain.

Just back off republicans, you did lose.

He's member of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, a union.

Not that Hannity being a hypocrite is a surprise...

The American citizenry supports the unions not the Republicans and their big corporate bosses and robber barons. The thing about this vote is that it will cause people to take sides. As a result, it will become even more clear that Republicans are NOT for workers but for themselves and their cronies.

I hope so. Most Republicans I talk to do not know what this bill is for one thing , They think it does not allow secret ballot!! I do not know how to educated those who do not choose to be educated on it. Just keep pushing back I guess.

Even though people take sides, where the vote will take place is where it counts. Congress!!! They are being bribed with Millions in campaign contributions to buy off their votes. Lobying at it's best. If it were up to popular vote of the people, I have full beliefs it would pass but WE do not get this vote. We must all urge our representatives to vote for this regardless of the millions being paid towrds their campaign funds. They need to know WE elect them and WE do hold them responsible for how they vote OR they will be replaced! We need to be foot soldiers pushing this and they need to hear from us frequently or it just may slip past us and never again happen.
Cohersion, bribery, paid off for votes, contributions to influence Legislation, call it what you want, its needs to become a chargible offense in politics.

Can someody tell me why the businesses and their lobbyists get more democracy than we do? Is 'that' the American way? Can any of us get the valuable time of our Representatives and Senators to press OUR views? OR IS THIS A NATIONAL PAY TO PLAY?????

THINK ABOUT THAT CONCEPT....

THEY (businesses) HAVE "MORE" DEMOCRACY THAN CITIZENS DO !!!!!

Coercion by use of money to ones campaigns. It's this illegal? Buying someone off for votes. Isn't this illegal? Possible we the citizens of the United States need to hire a lawyer and bring a case against our elected politicians for accepting bribes and allowing lobbyist to sway votes for money. A class action suit for the people. Find which key Dem politicians fall victim to these lobbyiest and send a real message that this is simply unaceptable in this new world of change. What a name a lawyer could make if this could be organized.

Pigs Benedict

Republican candidates are really just employees of business special interests.

Republicans are not servants of the people. They serve those who pay the lobbyists, and who fill the lobbyists' vote buying portfolios.

Consider the refusal to accept much needed funds for social stability programs, such as unemployment. Are people just supposed to starve and lose their homes for your false principles?

Republicans serve the business community by deregulating and eliminating oversight, as well as channeling contracts and their other usual crimes.

Add to this the massive election fraud and vote rigging and voter caging, disgraceful phone and mail messages, misuse of civil court to undermine candidates, . . .

My goodness, the list does go on. I paint it broadly, because the candidates are only the servants, so those they work for are also guilty of fraud, theft, treason, and the mass slaughter of innocent Iraqis.

The angry monster never goes away . . . the ferocious beast of "American interests", which of course only benefit the very few.

Remember, health care is a privilege . . .
