Illinois Unemployment Rate Hits 7.9%, Highest Since 1993
Illinois' unemployment rate jumped to 7.9 percent in January, the highest it's been since April 1993.
That tops December's 7.2 percent mark and represents a loss of 29,300 more jobs. About one-third were in manufacturing.
The national unemployment rate now stands at a 16-year high of 7.6 percent.
The Illinois Department of Employment Security says 518,600 Illinoisans are out of work, the most since November of 1985.
IDES Director Maureen O'Donnell says it's important to remain positive and to take advantage of services her agency provides. She say jobless workers can file for unemployment insurance online and have benefits direct-deposited to a bank account.
The agency also offers career counseling tips.
