WASHINGTON — Looking for happiness _ it's family-friendly communities for some, tropical paradise or the rugged West for others. A survey of Americans' well-being, conducted by Gallup in partnership with Healthways and America's Health Insurance Plans, gives high marks to Utah, which boasts lots of outdoor recreation for its youthful population.

Speaking of outdoor recreation, the islands of Hawaii took second place and Wyoming was third in the poll that rated such variables as mental, physical and economic health.

But fun outdoors obviously wasn't the only criteria _ "wild, wonderful" West Virginia was ranked last among the states.

And the bluegrass state of Kentucky was 49th, with Mississippi 48th on the list.

In general, highest well-being scores came from states in the West while the lowest were concentrated in the South. The happiest congressional districts were some of the wealthiest, while the lowest scores came in some of the poorest.

Jim Harter, a researcher at Gallup, said he was reluctant to explain regional differences without more study, but he suspected that some of the variations are explained by income. For example, when people were asked to examine their status in life now and five years from now, wealthier people tended to score higher.

The survey attempts to measure people's well-being. It examines their eating and exercise habits, work environment and access to basic necessities, just to name some of the criteria.

"It's not just about physical health," said Eric Nielsen, a spokesman for Gallup. "It's about their ability to contribute at work and be more productive, and it's about feeling engaged in a community and wanting to improve that community."

The massive survey involved more than 350,000 interviews. Examples of the questions include: Did you smile or laugh a lot yesterday? Are you satisfied or dissatisfied with your job or the work you do? Did you eat healthy all day yesterday? Do you feel safe walking alone at night in the city or area where you live?

The survey, which takes about 15 minutes, involved 42 core questions. Those taking the survey could get a score of up to 100. The actual difference between states wasn't great: The average score for the highest-ranking state, Utah, was 69.2 points, while the average for the lowest-ranking state, West Virginia, was 61.2 points.

But Harter said that he believed geographic divides could be overstated and even the states with the highest scores had significant work to do to improve certain aspects of their residents' health and happiness.

Researchers hope the findings will help employers better understand what they can do to create more productive workers. Eventually, the data could even be used to compare health and happiness by ZIP code. The survey is going to be generated for 25 years, according to current plans.

To that end, the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index also ranked congressional districts. Residents in California Rep. Anna Eshoo's coastal district south of San Francisco generated the top well-being score, followed closely behind by residents of Georgia Rep. Tom Price's district, on the northern edge of Atlanta. Both districts rank in the top 10 in median household income.

On the opposite end, Rep. Harold Rogers' district in eastern Kentucky's coal country and New York Rep. Jose Serrano's district, which includes the distressed neighborhood of the South Bronx, had the lowest well-being scores.

It was a shock to see Mormonland top the list (maybe it was because they banned gay marriage in California). It was only natural that the South should be on the bottom.

I've always been perfectly content living in Oregon.

I am extremely happy - four months every winter living on the beach on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii, the other eight months living in the mountains of Oregon. What's not to like?

Utah, huh?

They consume the most pornography per capita of any state, have the most strict laws on the books when it comes to personal freedoms like alcohol and tobacco use, all while having the highest incest molestation and lowest sex crime conviction rate in the country.

I think the ranking system may be a little flawed.

They also have the highest per capita use of SSRIs.

In a related poll, the states ranked from highest to lowest in propensity to lie through their teeth: Wyoming, Utah and Hawaii come in the top three respectively. Wyoming had lost the top spot for almost eight years from 2001 to 2009 when they suddenly regained the ignominious distinction, the cause of which is still being investigated. Behind those three come Texas, which followed the same trend as Wyoming, Alaska and Kansas.

Huh...? I can't speak for your claim there are liars in Utah or Wyoming, but what's not to like about living in Hawaii?

Have you ever been here?

The cost of living is so high lots of common folks there live in hovels. Plenty of racism too. Apparently when you visited you weren't paying attention. Is the weather great? You bet. The tropical beaches? Wonderful. But there's more to living that that.

The lord has nothing to do with it, true happiness comes from being self sufficient, fulfilled and happy in what you do and giving back to your community and others. Give credit where credit is due. Nobody is responsible for my happiness but me.

Whose Lord would that be? Lord Vader? Lord Vishnu? Lord Buddha? Lord Mohammed? Lord Easter Bunny? Lord Tooth Fairy? Or perhaps you mean Lord Jesus? If you think any of these so-called "lords" is making you happy, you are suffering from a form of mental illness.

Yeah...they are already tooting their horn about this poll on the local news and talking about ways to incorporate the slogan - sigh.

Non-LDS, born and raised in Utah. It's alright but it ain't all that.

Utah is very pretty if you like to hike and ski.

Wyoming also has the highest drunk driving per capita, so that explains that.

Happiness poll??

Happiness for me is 45 wooded, and farmland acres in the middle of the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina where one hears nothing but the wind, and the sounds of nature, and sees the Milky Way at night instead of neighbors tacky houses, and shopping mall lights.

More important is that it's paid for: I am quite happy here, thank you very much.

The truth is, it has nothing to do with some poll. I'm a non-Mormon living in Utah, so I think I have a right to either defend or castigate this state more so than those of you who have never even visited. That's fair, right?

Utah has some cornball liquor laws, and 80% of the state legislator are all members of the LDS church. so obviously there is cultural overflow. Does it make living in Utah as a liberal non-Mormon difficult? Sometimes, yes.
Are ALL mormons a bunch of evil, hateful, mean, hypocritcai bigots? NO!
Now, keep in mind, I live on the east side of Salt Lake City, which is considered "The hippy-dippy liberal" part of Utah. It's an interesting dichotomy here, because at least from my own observances, LDS members in that particular voting district (Jim Matheson-D, 2nd district) are far more liberal (in their voting record at least) than their 3rd and 1st district counterparts.
Most of my close friends are LDS (mormon) , and amongst them, some are liberal, pro-choice Democrats, and some are more conservative Republicans. More important than that, they are all good, decent people.
The point I am trying to make (not sure how successfully) is that tolerance goes both ways. It's just as unfair to put a blanket generalization on LDS church members and Utah, as it is unfair for religious conservatives to label all liberals as "amoral, elist, kooks, "

Thank you Tracy! There are almost zero people in the world willing to say anything even half way polite about mormons and frankly it scares me. Not all mormons are wingnuts and I"m glad you've met a few.

Mitt Romney gets all kinds of discussion for being a conservative Mormon, but keep in mind, Harry Reid is also mormon, so the religion has nothing to do with where a person stands on issues.

I'm from Vegas, which is also (or used to be) predominantly Mormon. So, yeah, it's certainly possible for Mormons to practice their faith happily without demanding all non-bible activity around them stops. Those weird chicks with braids and little house on the praire dresses, like Chloe Sevigny's character on Big Love are really only on TV.

If ignorance is indeed bliss, Georgia may not be the happiest but it is the most blissful.

Washington, Idaho, and Montana suck as bad as Utah and Wyoming. Wolves, cougars, and rednecks with guns are everywhere. Deer jump in front of your car from nowhere. Mormons abound. Hippies swing from the trees. I 90 goes through there but has deep ruts from studded tires. Don't take any exits till you get to Seattle and you will be safe! Better yet, go back to the East Coast.

But a lot of Hollywood loves Montana and Idaho. And they're not noted for being left-wing.
